Do you think proper diet helps with BP?

I can't say proper diet has helped me at all. I've been eating super healthy and my depression has gotten worse. What BS!

On the upside, proper diet hasn't worsened my mania (at least I don't think, anyway). So that's good... but proper diet hasn't exactly made it better either...

I'm just wondering if you guys have seen an improvement in symptoms from eating a healthier diet. (I'm kinda referring to the diet thread by bizi.)

I'm sure it's different for all of us, but I'm just curious about you guys.
Thanks for this!

I generally eat healthy all the time and if I do eat crap on occasion I notice my mood dips and I feel worse for it mentally (as well as physically). If I were to eat rubbish all the time I expect it would significantly impact my mood for the worse. Saying that, my healthy diet has certainly not prevented me from having severe and frequent episodes so idk.

I was eating a super healthy diet, and slipped off of it for a week.
I felt awful for that week. Tired, my eyes were dry, my tummy felt there was a big lump in it...just feeling drained of energy

I don't know.

I eat lots of fruits and veggies. Or I used to anyway. When I had a job!

I don't really like eating.

I don't think eating healthy or not has anything to do with BP. I however have to because if I eat a bunch of carbs I feel ill, and my hands and feet tingle. It raises my blood sugar too high and I pay for it. Diabetes sucks, not as much as BP, but it still sucks.

I don't know, either. I also don't like eating so I keep it minimal. It's pretty healthy when I do eat. And I have to have 500 calories for my Geodon.

yes, I believe diet is important. I just can't afford to eat in such fashion anymore; especially the fresh salmon. Lots of sunlight (natural vitamin D) is helping though.

Gluten makes me have bad mixed episodes/panic attacks. Seriously. After my recent med changes, I'm going to give it a little while for me to stabilize and then I'll try gluten again. Fingers crossed that I can finally have gluten again!

Oh, and on Latuda, I couldn't have a single glass of wine with dinner without being in a totally b****y mood the next day. I'm going to test it out again now that I'm on Abilify, after I feel more stabilized.

Some bipolars do well on a primal/paleo or even a ketogenic diet. Not the popular idea of Atkins-type ketogenic diet with all the bacon and sausage and SPAM you can eat, but a real ketogenic diet... unprocessed meat, birds (poultry), fish, eggs, leaves (vegetables), some fruit (mainly berries), butter, oils, even the fat from the meat and full fat dairy. The meat should be as close to natural as possible, the fish wild caught. No legumes or grains. It's highly recommended for epileptics. For some reason it affects brain chemistry positively. I am not following it now for my own reasons, but it's worth a try, though it can take 6 weeks or so to start to adapt to it.

not so much with quality of food, but quantity, if I don't eat enough or regularly I get pissy
