What kind of car do you drive?

I drive a 2017 VW Golf, Wolfsburg edition. It has a manual transmission -- which is getting harder and harder to find -- and a panoramic sunroof. It is loads of fun to drive, but not very practical. I get 35 mpg.

I got a little hypo when I was buying my car last fall. I should have gone used, but I couldn't help myself. I spent a hundred hours looking at cars and doing research online. When I finally found what I was looking for, I bought it without thinking twice. I immediately had buyer's remorse and tried to trade it in for something else, but I would have lost about $5000 and fortunately changed my mind. I love my car.

The only problem is that I'm a little OCD. I can't park within a mile of anyone else, because I'm afraid I'll get a scratch or a dent. So far, my caution has paid off, because there's not a mark on it. But the anxiety has not been worth the price, and I would have been better off with an older car that has already been broken in.

I'm also a little neurotic about the odometer. I watch for palindromes and feel that I will have a good day whenever I pass one.

Just curious as to what you drive and why. Thanks in advance for responding.

Toyota Corolla. Supposedly reliable but my last one had a transmission issue when it was only 7 years old. But I was not changing the oil or doing any maintenance for 10-15k miles so I gave them the benefit of the doubt and bought another one. So far no issues, it's four years old. I just hope it lasts until I can pay it off.

2014 Hyundai Santa Fe, AWD.. MSRP $34,000, but I got it for $28,000 when I bought it in 2014.

- Auto $2000 off because it was 2014 and 2015 models were coming out
- Auto $1000 off for repeat customers (parents bought their cars at the dealership)
- Auto $1000 off as student discount

That got it down to $30k

Got an additional $2k off for negotiation

Got the SUV because I'm planning for a dog. It's also practical because I can haul stuff and have extra trunk space. Not exactly the most "fashionable" car, but my parents' Hyundai's have lasted 11 yrs so far. OK mileage @25mpg using mid grade fuel. Not bad considering it's an SUV

A Saturn Vue. 2002.

I always wonder how people with mental illness afford to buy late-model cars.

2004 Buick Lesabre. It needs repair before winter. Blower motor needs replaced, and for some reason it only blows through the defrost. Always something with this car. Can't afford to buy another one right now.

Easy fix man. Cheap too. I've done it a couple times, as well as on a 2002 gtp

2017 Hyundai Elantra. Got over 40 mpg on a recent trip of over 300 miles with 4 full size people and luggage. I got 45 mpg on a long highway drive by myself. Around town is down in the 30s. For about $18k they come pretty fully loaded with all the luxury toys and some traffic detection safety features.

It's a stereotype with some basis in fact - the best programmers are quirky. I do not disappoint...

If a person with mental illness is working and has a decent salary, why can't said person have a late model car?

That being said, I currently have a 2016 VW Tiguan

I see what you mean. But I guess it depends on the severity of the illness and the type of job

I get to work from home whenever I want. I'm also a software engineer, so there really aren't too many deadlines that I have to meet, which makes the job quite lax. And prior to that, I worked in a research lab. The only deadlines were conferences, and most of us only did 1-3 conferences a year. So basically no deadlines there either.

So for me, the lack of stress lets me hold a decent job, which in turn lets me get a decent salary. Just an example from me

I share ownership of a 2017 Mini Cooper with my son-in-law. (It's a long story.) I love it and find it a genuine pleasure to drive.

A Yukon XL K2500, an Equinox AWD, and a Corolla. I get to pick and choose when I walk out the door in the morning.

I'm with Blue. Having MI doesn't rule out being able to hold down a decent job. There are more of us than many people realize. I believe this forum allows us to vent the worst of our issues, and doesn't necessarily shed light on the fact that many of us live somewhat "normal" lives.
