My pdoc just put me on 50 mg of Seroquel to combat severe agitation. I have tried all the weight neutral options so here I am. It has only been one night but I have woken up after 6 hours feeling wide awake and energetic, and not agitated. Yeh, for me. I know it is early days but is this what I am to expect? Also, will I gain weight on such a low dose? Did it get rid of your agiation?

I know we are all different but I would love any feedback right now. I am currently IP and have been for over 2 weeks and want to go home ASAP but my psychiatrist won't release me until my agitation lessens as I am a danger to myself.

Thanks in advance.

Your post is interesting to me because I've had mild agitation ever since I stopped talking oxycodone.

I'm going to suggest that drug to my doc
Thanks for this!

That's a pretty low dose. When I was first diagnosed I was put on 300mgs. I did gain weight. But I had taken 25 mgs for yrs for sleep and didn't gain weight on that. I think you'll be ok.
Thanks for this!

Yes, Seroquel has been instrumental in helping lower my agitation. When my dose was below 100mg it was weight neutral for me.
I’m currently on a mix of XR and immediate release - 400mg. I have had some weight gain at this higher dose.

So, it seems the low dose doesn’t cause weight gain? I so hope it doesn’t have to be increased. This morning (in Australia) I feel less agitated but still quite a bit as my agitation was severe. Anyone had such severe agitation that they feel like they would do something drastic to stop it. I’m get wild an out of control, impulsive and dangerous. It terrifies me.

Hi from Aus I’ve been dangerously agitated before and my Seroquel gets adjusted accordingly. My weight therefore yo-yo’s up and down.

Yes, on both latuda and geodon I had severe agitation. Or akathisia. It was awful. I wonder if the haldol was causing that in you?

At moment I take 400 XR and 100 IR. Have recently been able to cut the dose with MD approval.

I have 25mg tablets also for PRN agitation, 1-2 PRN, I have not had to use in quite awhile now but there was a stretch when I did quite often. It was helpful.

Do you take a benzo? A low dose PRN might be helpful?

When I was taking the 25-50 PRN, it was in the mornings. Would feel like I was going to explode into a million pieces and my brain would not shut up. It helped calm that down.
Thanks for this!

Latuda did not help me. Haven’t tried Geoden.

Thanks. I have thought of the Haldol but it did seem to help a bit. Stopped taking it recently and had no impact. Still going crazy. I love your simile about being exploded into a million pieces. It is like that. I am hoping the low dose Seroquel will relieve my agitation and not gain weight. Boy does it make you crave sugar and fats though!!

Thanks. I take lots of bezos, too many to be honest. I am currently on 7 mg of Clonazepam and on a reduction program. It lost helping me many months ago, even at higher and higher doses. I now hate the stuff and desperately want to get off them. Not to dismiss your thoughtfulness though.

Wow, that is A LOT of klonopin. That kinda scares me for you honestly. Have you been on Valium or others?

Thanks for your concern. It was one of the reasons I was made IP as I was taking 8-10 mg a night with alcohol. Could have accidentally died. No other bezos involved recently. I was just self-medicating my agitation. Not a bright idea, I agree. Now down to 6 mg and to be lowered again soon.

I took 200mg of seroquel at night and it kept me calm for most of the next day. So yes I would say it lowered agitation.

Glad to hear things are trending in the right direction. And good that you are not drinking. I was never a big drinker but I can't at all now...I get way sedated from not much.

Hang in there and keep using board for support.

I’ve been on 300 mg of Seroquel for awhile now. It has helped me with the manic symptoms and usually causes me to fall asleep without a problem (unless I am manic). Everyone is different, but I have not gained weight on it. I do tend to be an avid outdoor walker/jogger though, so I exercise regularly. I never noticed it increasing my appetite. My pdoc first tried me on the extended release version, and that made me want to sleep all day. I hope it continues to work for you!
Thanks for this!

I wanted to add that my current weight issues aren’t so much Seroquel, as Seroquel + Depakote + numerous, copious medical issues.
So try not to focus on the weight. Focus on getting well.

I lost a ton of weight on seroquel. Im on 500 mgs now and have just started slowly gaining a little weight. But my experience isnt common- the weight loss

But yes. Thats a really low dose. No where near therapeutic levels (though its going to feel sedating and calming for you so- itll probably help with that agitation)

But yeah. If you start gaining weight talk to your doctor, thats really all you can do

I hate that there is such a horrible payoff for getting well. I don’t want to be on so many meds. I’m only on 4 but even that feels like too much. Lithium , Lamotrogine , Clonazepam and now Seroquel. I just want to be well and healthy. Is that really too much to ask for all of us?

Umm, anyone go into hypomania after taking Seroquel for the first time (well in 7 years and I can’t recall traction then except that it bombed me out which is not what happed here on double the dose) I hardly slept last night, feel, great, am restless, can’t sit still, bet chatty, increased src drive etc. All less than a day before I was severely agitated and about to be in voluntarily committed. This is really odd and I’m loving it 🙄.

All I can remember about seroquel is that it gave me severe leg cramps....don't recall the dose.

I am on 400 mg a day.
The first two weeks I gained almost 8 pounds.
After that I changed my diet, more protein and less carbs. I also work out three times a week and walk everyday. I have lost almost 12 pounds and feel really healthy.

My anxious state of being has become really calm, and I actually feel I have more emotions now- but in a more normal manner.

I am amazed of how well the Seroquel is working, and I hope it stays that way.
Did have some side-effects the first couple of weeks, but those are gone now.

Hope it works out well for you
Thanks for this!

I'm on a low dose of Seroquel (100 mg) and haven't gained weight on it.

It is excellent for easing agitation, but is really sedating. I've fallen asleep sitting up after taking a dose. For me I usually feel the effects in about 45 minutes.

I take it during the day when I'm what I call "not fit for human consumption", meaning I'm a real misery to be around, and agitated/aggressive.

It helps even when Xanax won't touch it.

It eased my agitation but left me way to sedated even on low dose so I didn’t last long on it.
I hope it works for you

I'm on 300 mg Seroquel. I've been on low doses in the beginning (50 mg-100 mg) to sleep, and I did not gain any weight or have any side effects. At my highest I've been on 800 mg, so that's quite a range! I did not notice any significant side effects until being on 600 mg. I did manage, and it worked well when it comes to getting out of mixed mania., I had twitching and had to get a lot of sleep, or I would get light headed in the morning. My craving for sweets went up, but I only gained a little bit of weight. I felt sluggish, but I needed that to push me out of some horrible episodes.

The weird thing about Seroquel is that each dose is different. Below 600 mg, I experienced no weight gain, no twitching, no light headedness. However, I need at least 300 mg to notice any mood stabilizing properties. Otherwise, it is more for sleep. I get some fatigue and extreme sedation before bed, but that's it. Sleep is much better. It helped me think clearer and prevent racing thoughts/mania.

Anyway, I'm sorry that you've been IP. Sending you hugs.
Thanks for this!
