So I’ve tried so many prescription and no prescription drugs to help me sleep: seroquel, lunesta, trazodone, ambien, gabapentin, valerian, Benadryl.

I stopped taking anything prescription a while ago.

I wasn’t taking anything but I wasn’t getting enough sleep so I started taking 1.5mg melatonin.

Now I don’t want to get up. Has anyone else noticed this with melatonin?

Melatonin helps me a little, but for me it does not that effective. I've taken a wide range, include massive amounts. What works great for me is Diphenhydramine HCL. I think that's what it is. Sorry I don't have any right now. For some reason some bottles are listed as a relief for allergy, but others list as sleeping pill. Confusing. Maybe there's two different types? Idk, but it really puts me out for at least 6 hours and I can feel it strongly for 8 hours. If I awaken to go to the bathroom my body feels like it weighs a ton. Fortunately my depression is stronger than mania so I have no problems going to sleep.

I take 10 mg nightly....doesn't help with the falling asleep but it does help with the staying asleep. A routine helps with the falling asleep part.

hi. i have bottles of 5mgs, "controlled-release," and they help, on those rare nights I am unable to fall asleep without some assistance.

high (10mgs) doses of melatonin have been used in people w/ tardive dyskinesia, with good results. its a potent antioxidant, apparently.

It helped me sleep but gave me horrible nightmares. I had to stop taking it.

1.5 mg may be too much, most studies suggest a therapeutic dose is somewhere between 0.5 and 1 mg, after that either it impacts on drowsiness when trying to get up, or worse, too much can make the body stop responding to Melatonin at all so actually make the problem worse (there is a threshold effect).

For me it is exactly the other way around. It helps me to fall asleep but I still wake up after 4hours.

Maybe its also a question of what kind of melatonin pill it is? When researching I got aware that some are so called 'slow-motion'-pills which give the melatonin to ur body over some hours...

That’s the dose of the spray I bought from the nutrition store.

I think for me I’m taking it to train my body to go to sleep when I tell it along with my weighted blanket, turning off electronic devices one hour before bedtime, yoga, not eating a couple of hours before bedtime, hot bath. Those aforementioned things are all tactics I know of. When I asked my p doc about ptsd in a rhetorical manner he said I still have that but I also have bp mixed moderate. For me a lot of it has to do with work and appetite and hunger and tiredness. I was getting off nights but now I’m getting off earlier in exchange for getting up earlier. It’s so utterly frustrating.

I took it for the first time last night and I slept awesome. I woke up at my normal time with no drowsiness. I love this stuff!

That's the problem, much of the stuff they sell over the counter is too high, it's not regulated medically so they peddle the idea that higher doses are more effective when there is evidence the opposite is the case.

Edit no I don't disapprove of melatonin, I use it myself as I said, my doctor was originally also trying to raise the dose thinking it would make it more effective and it just made things worse, then we found the research (above) that showed we needed to go lower and that worked better

You asked for why it might be making you drowsy in mornings too, this is a possible answer

Thanks,it looks like you are also new to the forum and posting.

Ive done a lot of research on it and discussed it with my therapist years ago. Perhaps if you disapprove of melatonin you could start your own thread.

I read that melatonin builds up in your system and the ideal dosage is 3mg. But I see people taking a lot more with no issues.

I take 10 mg of melatonin with 5 mg of zopiclone every night.
I find that the melatonin helps me stay asleep.
No problem with dreams though

Why are you advising Carmina to make her own thread ? you asked for opinions, she just gave her opinion which is what PC is all about. She needs not make a thread of her own unless SHE wants to.

Why are you so aggressive when a person says something you disagree with it ???

Carmina , welcome to Pc and I hope you keep posting

Carmina, Thank you for the articles! It's a big help in sorting out info. re: melatonin use.

Diphenhydramine is an antihistamine. Antihistamines work to control allergies and they also make you sleepy (at least this one does and so does Seroquel, which works only as an antihistamine at low doses.). Benedryl is diphenhydramine as is Zzzquil.

Please stop labeling me as aggressive, that's gas lighting and smearing. I'm not sure why I said that but if I did there was a good reason for it. You are back to your old behavior of attacking me. I have a suggestion for you. Please ignore me.
