For those of you that love good movies and would like to see one that relates to Bipolar- check out "The Hours"... Nicole Kidman, Julianne Moore & Meryl Streepe- an excellent movie to see with loved ones that want to understand you a little more.

This movie has a huge theme of suicide, so if that's triggering for you....stay way from this movie.

I saw this movie, and being bipolar I can't tell you how much I could relate to this film. I, however, was extremely sad after seeing this movie, so anyone who is suicidal should not watch it.

yes, i saw that....it was extremely powerful. and i would agree that one may want to be cautious of the suiside aspect. But, it was very, very powerful.

I agree the film has a main theme of suicide would not reccomend anyone with suicidal ideations or thoughts to view this film without a mental health professional present.

I became obcessed with the film, the intensity of the emotions and the different geographical settings along with the time era's and views of mental illness were so much similar as yet different as today.

I have the DVD, and have viewed it alone in the dark hundreds of times, though not healthy, I believe I had a sense of identity to the main character, and all of the characters and aspects of life. So many phrases and lines of the characters I could identify and still can.

Given the sense I was not sucicidal while viewing it was a way for me to feel, the only way for me to feel as if or that I was not alone, as twisted as it is. They became my friends, and I was them in a sense. I could relate so much. Only could not relate to the choice of suicide.

Sorry, I will stop, as I said I am obsessed with the film.

This movie has defnitely perked my interest. I can definitely have very strong suicide ideation while in the abyss but I don't have them otherwise. Do you think it would be ok if I watched it while not in the abyss?

I do seem to have a strong interest in movies that relate to MI because, as you say, you can relate to the characters. I own Girl Interrupted but to be honest I don't think I have really seen any others.

What other movies deal with MI that I could rent? I have a very strong urge to rent 'The Hours' but wondering if maybe I should watch it with family or if I would be ok to watch alone. Seeing it with my T would be out of the question. My sessions do not last long enough to watch an entire movie. I'm not sure whether she would accomodate booking a longer appt time and would be willing to watch the movie with me or not, I've never even thought of having a MI professional present before. I suppose I could ask her but I do prefer to watch a movie at home where it is more comfortable. Oh, another factor that would come into play for me with a movie that deals with suicide is how graphic it might be, maybe somebody could tell me here or PM the info to me if you feel that is more appropriate.

Anybody got any thoughts on that and also what other movies dealing with MI that I could rent?

Hubby watched "A Beautiful Mind" a lot when he was first diagnosed. It is now banned in our house. I think it made him worse...not to mention the fact that it scared him a lot.

It's a great movie. Just not right for us. Hits too close to home...or it did.

I can't recall who posted this on Babble, but I liked it so much I saved the link. It's a list of movies related to mental health issues:

http://faculty.dwc.edu/nicosia/movie...ilmography.htm

That list does not include descriptions of the movies, but you can always looks them up in the Internet Movie Database:

It's about John Nash. He is a nobel prize winner (economics) and suffers from schizophrenia. He is an amazing person.

Here is his autobiography. http://nobelprize.org/economics/laur...h-autobio.html

Right when hubby was first diagnosed he told his friends he had paranoid schizophrenia. I was SO angry. That is not his diagnosis and no where near what he has. Hubby thought DID and schizophrenia where "the same thing". UH! No! If he did have schizophrenia that would be one thing, but just saying that word makes people scared. I refuse to use it unless it applies...and it doesn't.

Angel Girl, a fabulous movie on BP is "Mr. Jones" with Richard Gere. It portrays the illness in the extreme. But on the whole I'd have to say it's pretty accurate.

Besides, who wouldn't want to watch Richard Gere for a couple of hours regardless of what the movie is about????
