Just been told that I most likely have BPD, since none of the meds are working and based on my weekly conversations with my shrink. I think, I liked it better when they thought I was bipolar. Less scary and able to be treated with meds, but i guess that's why all the different meds didn't work.
![]() Now, with BPD hanging over my head I feel more lost and afraid that I'll never get better. |

BPD isn't so bad. Medication can be used for certain parts of BPD, and DBT can be very effective. And now that you know it's BPD, you have more of a chance of getting better than you did before you were diagnosed. Don't give up yet.

BPD is like your a goldfish in a round bowl and you are looking outside of your surroundings you spot two cats sneaking up to make you their dinner. Its just a roller coaster ride with new surprises every time.
BPD is treatable people do come out of the fog. Does the pdoc know why the drugs aren't treating you well it does some times takes 4-6 weeks for the regime to take effect. Its not the end of the world if you think it is your mistaken. Stick with it and see it through.

neither is a picnic..i can promise you that..i have BPD too and mine is quite severe...there are many different therapies that can be used to help overcome the problem we have..it's not easy and every day is a struggle as we have to completely unlearn everything we have always done. some days are better than others..but never a dull moment! hang in there and if you can get a really good therapist life gets a lil easier hope this helps!

So you're not yet diagnosed?
Diagnosing PD's actually takes a fair bit of time if done properly - and it's usually the same process country to country. So while i'm not trying to undermine your doctor i would exercise caution until you're given a more solid idea of the situation. There is medication to help treat the symptoms of BPD - although the effectiveness across users is debated. Have you been offered any second generation anti-psychotics/mood stabilisers? Some meds like Depakote (sorry don't know the american name) are used in treating both BPD and bi polar. So there is some overlap. Maybe you've yet to be offered the right kind or haven't been taking anything long enough to see the benefits. Either way i would do some more research as it will help in determining whether your current doctor is suitable in treating you. I would be wary of any doctor who wants you to switch medication too rapidly. Just another heads up, with BPD the focus is less on the curative and more on the effective management of symptoms. This usually comes in the form of behavioural therapy etc Don't let anyone tell you DBT is all there is or most effective. It's not always the case. Sometimes a more holistic approach like psycho-dynamic group work is enough for people. Other times 1-1 psychotherapy is better. Again it's about reading, recognizing the severity of symptoms and learning how to respond effectively. It's not impossible. But it is hard work and therefore requires perseverance. Some people prefer to find their own way through the mire. That's ok too but i would always encourage anyone to at least try and get professional advice first. Believe it or not there can be positives in having a PD - with BPD a lot of sufferers find themselves with a higher than average intellect, a great sense of creativity and a lot of empathy. Don't be afraid. Sometimes it's better to charge at the Bull than risk running away. Good luck to you. |

For me, knowing what was wrong with me helped me forgive myself for a lot of s**t I did in my past. Hang in there.

Very true...daily basis is hard, but this site has helped me a lot..even allowing me to laugh at myself for some the things I do that are sooooo stupidly BPD. Humour helps more than anyone realizes, because when we are in the depths of a crash...it is so very bad, that if we can find something funny when we're out of it, it kinda makes the bad times more managable.

Oh my. I understand you freaking out about it. I was very upset when I found out I was borderline. I went into denial and kept trying to think of ways to prove I didn't have it. Now, I don't label myself as borderline, I'm just me and I am doing the best I can to stay on an even ride. Some days are good and others not so good. I found it to be a great comfort to realize that there are so many others just like me. I also now understand what I have gone through my whole life--makes a kind of sense now. I am not a "bad" person. I am someone who has borderline personality and that's not my fault at all. You'll be okay too.
