I was also bullied in school and in my neighborhood. Sure ain't good, not for an innocent child whose identity hasn't yet formed ![]() If you ask me, bullying + ignorance = Columbine + Virginia Tech. Idiots are taking people's guns away, without realizing what the true problem is. |

On a personal note I do not like the idea of splitting us into groups and it often upsets me to see someone with BPD referring to the 'bad" BPDs. We all have BPD. We are all hurting and there is enough hate coming in from the outside without us hating each other. It is upsetting that someone has caused pain to someone else (and it does not excuse their behaviour) but that person is hurting just as much as the rest of us. This is another problem with the stigma of BPD. A lot of people tend to conveniently forget that a large portion of people with BPD are trauma survivors. Attempt to explain that though and you're just making excuses for yourself. Get angry that people are saying bad things about you and you're not taking responsibility for yourself. Someone please explain to me why I'm not allowed to get angry at someone saying I deserve to die? I am yet to see an answer to that question that doesn't equate to "because you have BPD and your feelings don't matter." Apparently the invalidation I received as a child wasn't punishment enough. Now I need to have complete strangers telling me not just that I'm worthless but that I'm pure evil. I don't care that it's not directly pointed at me. When you say all borderlines and make generalizations- as someone with BPD- you ARE talking about me. It doesn't matter how much I can understand why people are saying what they're saying. It doesn't hurt any less. In the end the simplest answer would be to hate the person who hurt you. Not someone who happens to have the same label. I understand the need for support between people who have been hurt but please keep it civil. You're causing even more damage to a group of already damaged people. We didn't wake up one day and declare we wanted to be complete emotional messes intent on destroying the lives of others. The people talking badly about people with BPD clearly need a lesson in empathy of their own. Last edited by Anonymous100154; Aug 16, 2014 at 06:39 AM. |

There's stigmas towards all mental health conditions, so long as a condition is invisible there will always be a degree of mistrust and suspicion. I don't think it will ever fully change.

I never intended to sound like I'm some authority on PTSD or to stereotype PTSD patients. In fact, I was just trying to state my OBSERVATION, which is that war veterans are generally given a hero's welcome upon returning home, and soldiers in general are not treated like they're mentally ill ... they're given the sympathy someone might give a person with a serious somatic illness like diabetes ... at least that's what I've seen and heard. You clearly have much more intimate knowledge of this because of your personal experience with your father. I have some personal reasons for not agreeing with public opinion on soldiers, but I'm not gonna go into them. Anyway, the bottom line is that I apologize for offending you. I gave my take on the matter and nothing else. I agree with the other (longer) part of your response. |

Oh no, there was no offense taken.
I was trying to state what you have unfortunately I was somewhat more aggressive in my phrasing. Sorry. As for the stigma of all mental illnesses BPD (and most cluster B's) also have to deal with stigma that is often perpetrated by the mental health profession itself. A supposedly running joke is "You don't treat BPDs. You ignore them." How many of us have been rejected for therapy without even having met the therapist? Judged on our label/s? As much as I keep telling myself it's good that they knew they weren't up to the task and left me for someone stronger. I can't help but feel that maybe I should just give up. I am clearly unhelpable. |

BPD has such negative historical associations, mainly based on ignorance and misunderstanding, that I think it's one label that should be re named or abandoned. Health professionals don't label people 'hysterical' anymore or 'insane' so why keep this one I wonder?.
I prefer the ICD10 term 'emotionally unstable personality disorder'. And recently I've been reading about cyclothymia, a type of Bi Polar, and wondering if that closer matches my symptoms. There's no stigma attached to it, mainly because most people (including me until recently) have never heard of it. Labels are helpful sometimes in getting the right help but need changing if they become part of the problem or become stigmatizing.

Hi everyone and thank you for your posts. Yes i was talking about fbi case files
Glittering, you said your counceller thouht from your discription that this person had bpd, however your councellor has never met this person and this horrible person you speak of has not actually been diagnosed has she? So i think you and your councelor are jumping to conclusions and this person is just a nasty person but doesnt have bpd. Everyone on here with bpd seem very caring nice people. I am extremely caring and have only ever hurt myself. Everyone ive met with bpd are so caring and nice. |
