Hey guys! Chat will be tonight at the usual time, 9 PM Eastern. Our topic will be "Support Networks." Thanks to chat participants for this great topic!

A head's up for next week--I will be out of town Thanksgiving day, so I am pushing up chat to Wednesday, November 25 at 9 PM Eastern. This is a one-time change and not permanent. Our topic next week will be "Dealing with Depression During the Holidays (Part I)." I'll post another reminder of the change that day.

Hi everyone. As many of you may have heard, eeyorestail hosted her last chat last Thursday. We all hope the baby is a wonderful addition to her life.

I was asked to step in and continue the Depression Chat by hosting it each week. I only hope I can bring some of the sensitivity and responsive compassion that eeyore has treated us too for the last couple years. I will continue using this thread for anyone who was subscribed to receive notification each week. PM me if you want to sign up for that.

So this week I am suggested an article that can serve as the basis for discussion that can serve as a focus of the types of therapies available to treat depression.
Depression Treatment | Psych Central - Part 4
This can include conventional meds and therapy as well as alternative treatments and self help.

So hope to see you all there on Thursday 9PM EST in the chat room for the Depression Support Chat.

Thank you for attending. It is the participants that make it a good chat.

Well there are not a lot of secrets for people who have struggled with Depression for years, but this article reminds us of the essential ingredient to feeling better.
The secret ingredient to dealing with depression | Unleash Your Creativity
This article will be a jumping off point for our Depression Support Chat this week.

If you have secrets you want to share that might help others or just want to be with other people open to finding healing and relief, stop by the Depression Chat on Thursday at 9PM EST.

All are invited no matter what your diagnosis is.

Well there is always something to new to talk about in Depression Support Chat on Thursday at 9PM EST. I saw this article on self monitoring and thought it might open some eyes about how we monitor our behavior and words, or not.
Self-Monitoring | Encyclopedia of Psychology

Those who monitor themselves in a highly meticulous manner are considered high self-monitors. They tend to project a particular image of themselves in order to fit in or impress others. High self-monitors readily adjust their behavior to the situation at hand.

Low self-monitors, on the other hand, tend to regulate themselves according to their own internal beliefs and are typically less concerned with social context. They tend to project an image true to their inner selves rather than put on a facade. Low self-monitors tend to care little about adjusting their behavior to the social situation and keep the same beliefs and attitudes regardless of others’ opinions.

Those who do not self-monitor at all may come across as pushy, aggressive and uncompromising. This may cause others to be less receptive toward them and lead to feelings of anger, low self-worth, depression and isolation.

Whatever diagnoses you have, feel free to drop by and listen to a group of supportive people that will be happy to see you. Who knows you may even feel like adding your thoughts as well.

Oftentimes people say your childhood had an effect on you and they usually mean negative effect. Here is an article that describes how our childhood emotional neglect made us stronger and more resilient.
The 5 Uncommon Strengths of the Emotionally Neglected | Childhood Emotional Neglect

Tonight in Depression Support Chat, Thursday 9PM EST, (need 5 posts or more if you are new here so go ahead and start posting or replying to others) we will use this article as a jumping off point to see what strengths we have acquired from our seemingly troubled pasts. Come on down to the Depression Support Chat no matter what your diagnosis is. See how you may be stronger than you think.

Hope to see you in the chat tonight.

Following up on last week's topic of the neglected child, here is a new technique that points to ways that have worked on actual patients with Depression. So in Depression Support chat this week, Thursday 9PM EST, we will discuss how either virtual reality or even using our imaginations we can heal the vulnerable child within us.

Virtual Reality Therapy Shows Promise for Depression | Psych Central News

This sounds like it has some good features.

Quote:
The researchers believe this type of therapy works because it helps depressed patients feel less critical and more compassionate toward themselves.
Quote:
In this study, by comforting the child and then hearing their own words back, patients are indirectly giving themselves compassion. The aim was to teach patients to be more compassionate towards themselves and less self-critical, and we saw promising results.
Interesting - even if someone does not have the virtual reality setup, it is still possible to take on the role of the compassionate adult talking to the vulnerable child. See you in chat.

It is important to keep on topic so everyone can benefit from the chat. At the end of chat there will be free time to discuss personal challenges. This is to protect the integrity of the chat and make sure everyone feels involved.

Well how fast the weeks go by. Depression Support Chat is happening Thursday at 9PM. I saw this extended article on Dealing with the Depths of Depression. We won't have time to cover anything so if you want to read the whole article here is the link.
Dealing with the Depths of Depression | Psych Central

So feel free to drop in at 9PM EST on Thursday and listen, and if you feel so inspired, to contribute.

Please keep chat on topic so all can benefit from the discussion. At the end of the chat there will be a chance to share challenges individuals face and how they are coping.

One of the reason people fall into depressive state is the loss of abilities or faculties, or even just the advancing years and the changes that occur. This week in Depression Support Chat we will use this article as a starter for discussion about how loss affects each of us personally.
Moving Beyond the Loss of an Ability
Moving Beyond the Loss of an Ability | Psych Central

So feel free to drop in for the Depression Support Chat Thursday night at 9PM EDT. (Eastern DaylightTime is now 4 hours less than Greenwich time until Greenwich time moves to their DST in their zone) So last week 9PM will be like an hour sooner if your time zone did not change to daylight savings time yet.
