Lynn said: "I can't speak for those who don't want any censorship but the owner of the site is posting what's happening in the world."
Lynn, I haven't looked at the site. It would trouble me too much. I think the owner is pandering to perversity. That he says it is to show what's happening in the world...well, that's just BS. |

Seeker - Even the original poster joined in the debate and offered her thoughts. We're well within our right to discuss the issue as we see fit, and have had a meaningful exchange of ideas. Furthermore, people have taken the time to actually look into the other side and try to take an understanding about the site and the video, where as you take a biased and uninformed higher moral ground. You have no right to imply that people are insane for not taking your stance on this topic.
Lynn - Personally, I am very adamant about the freedom of expression, so yes I think those videos should be allowed. As it stands I feel that in we already have too many exceptions to freedom of expression laws. I understand why you were upset by stumbling upon that and I'm sorry for it, but at the end of the day we cannot make an exception to the rule because a group of people may be upset by it. At the end of the day we lead very different lives and will have different views based on generation, family life, career, education etc etc and I respect that. I'm just usually good at playing devil's advocate, or in cases like this standing back enough to see a different perspective. I too hope that Magnotta is found guilty and punished to the full extent of the law. Unfortunately, our justice system is too lenient and I'm worried about his lawyer pleading insanity. Something tells me they won't get away with pleading not guilty. |

I understand the anger and passion that comes with this topic. I read the view of the site owner and he ended with saying and not quoting directly 'the whole world will be watching how Canada responds to this'. I don't think Canada wants to be known for this one. One good thing the owner did say is - he would take the video down if the victims family asked him too. I'm not sure if the owner will be charged with anything or if Canada will make any kind of statement or law about this. For example its against the law to bully online, so will other restrictions come up, as the online world becomes a free-for -all? If a family member sees their loved one dead online, will they be able to sue someone to get it removed - they have rights too, so I think that's important. Censorship verses the families rights may become precedent.
I want to know the reality of the world but I struggle with seeing it and I also don't know how one watches it without getting scarred. What I'd like to know is - how does a human being end up like this? Another thing that repulses me is necrophilia - yes I'm open to people having quirky non-harmful fetishes but this is ....indescribable. Since pedophiles tend to pick occupations that involve children ....do necrophiliacs do the same? ![]()

Yeah... I think this being moved to 'coping with emotions' was a mistake. This is a general conversation about current events. Where I put, is where it is meant to be.

Hello all. Good post LadyJane. I guess it's just that with the internet, we are now able to see the kind of deviant behavior thats always been out there, that we never had access to it before now. It's hard to understand why people would actually take the time to look for that kind of stuff. And even harder to think of people doing those things AND taping them. I love the internet, but every once in a while I run into stuff people post that make my skin crawl. And I feel like there is nothing I can do about it. I too believe in freedom of speech, but some of this stuff... I guess awareness is our best tool. And spreading the word. Petition, write our Legislators, educating people.
I made a You Tube vid asking for people to take action on a certain kind of vids being posted. In the end; they had more fans than I did because my vid got pulled by You Tube for me just WRITING about the things they did in the vids. LOL Just describing what they were doing on the video got mine censored. Go figure? |

I don't think TheDragon feels any differently from anyone else on this topic. S/He seems as appalled as I am by its content. I don't think there's any argument about the potential perversity of the site, just whether or not it legally deserves to exist.
However, although the site owner can wax eloquently about the 'principles' of providing these videos online, I do agree with the sentiment that this is likely a cover up for the depravity of a substantial portion of the site's users. I hate to say it, but I got back to investigating the site....again....and a lot of these comments are just sick. Much of these comments involved excitement or humor over the level of gore in the videos/photos. Furthermore, I think if any of you read how demeaning and hateful the 'articles' written about suicides are, you'd agree that these articles were not written simply to convey 'the truth.' In fact, a lot of comments involved sheer derision of the victims portrayed, including caption contests. The only truth about society here may be how easily we can overlook the misfortune of others. ![]() Quote:

Maybe Triggering!! :

I believe it's the mentality involved in ridiculing suicide that drives depressed individuals to 'prove' what they've been through in a way they couldn't do alive. ![]() I'm happy you're teaching your children to be empathetic! ![]() |

Thanks for your opinion Odee. Sorry to the original poster to get off topic a bit, but its kind of related to it - should there be some line. As I mentioned earlier I was looking for a suicide helpline number for a country and in the choices was a young man from Sweden - the video started automatically and in a matter of seconds it was done. I never knew this existed.
From my view, guess I hope others would have the same sense of right or wrong, appropriate VS not appropriate etc. ....but its a free for all online. I feel sorry for the families - bad enough to lose a loved one to suicide, but to know its available online must be awful. They should have some kind of rights at least. My family lost my brother and I would fight to have it removed if I was in their shoes.

There's tons of videos out there more graphic if you want to look for that stuff. It's not something I look for, unless it's a high profile case like this one, but " three men, 1 hammer was worse IMO".
