I don't have a therapist nor have I ever been to one. At times I feel like I really, really, really need to start seeing one. Now is one of those moments. I feel hopeless, I feel like everyone is angry with me (which is most likely all in my head), I feel like a failure, and I feel as though I have no one to turn to and that there is nothing anyone can do to ever make me feel okay... I'm almost sure of that.

So I guess I'm just wondering what therapy is like. Has it really helped any of you? How much does it cost? Is it worth it?

Hi there, I'd say you should definitely go for the therapy. I've had lots of therapy during my past 5 hospital visits, I had CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) and ERP for my OCD (Exposure Response Prevention). Worked wonderfully...I now have the tools and techniques required to keep my OCD under control...most of the time, at least.

I will tell you though, it's a LOT of hard work. It's mentally exhausting, but it is worth it if you work hard and reap the rewards.

As for the cost, I'm not too sure. All of my therapy has been free thus far (I live in Canada). I know how much cost can be a factor for some people in whether or not they obtain therapy, I hope this doesn't cause any issues for you!

Good luck on your journey.
Thanks for this!

Each therapist has his/her own style. Sometimes the differences to some extent may depend on whether the therapist is a behaviorist as opposed to a gestaltist, for example. I had one guy that was quite unemotional, said little and when he did speak would ask something like, "Well, what did you think about that?".

Therapy works best when you and the therapist are compatible. Best results are achieved when the client is open and forthright. The cost varies from free to several hundred dollars an hour in my experience.

As ohseedee mentioned, getting better is hard work. The harder you work at it the more likely you are to make progress. I can say I have benefited from therapy, on some occasions more than others. It was worth it to me.

I agree with above two responses. I want to add that when I have felt like you, just knowing I had someone to go see every week who would really listen to me was a great relief and helped me feel better.

Can't stop you from praying and blessing me,
and if that makes you feel better feel free.
But keep it to yourself please, don't tell me.
And let's all respect each other's feelings.
With kindness, support and "sweet dreamings."

Therapy and the therapeutic relationship are wonderful additions to one's life.
It is so relieving to have someone to talk to on a regular basis. Someone who cares about your emotional well being.

Here is a site that helped me when I was deciding about entering into therapy again: www.guidetopsychology.com

It costs me $70-$120 a week depending on how often I go (sometimes twice a week). I don't have insurance to use for this.

It has helped me so much! I was an emotional wreck when I began. Mood swings, meltdowns, horrible anxiety, living in a very closed off, avoidant world. Today I have a much more comfortable life, I am including more people in my life, and with the therapist--I keep learning about what makes me tick

Why not give it a try and see how it goes?

I have found T really helpful. I started going when I thought I was depressed. It was scary at first because I didn't know what to expect, but I was able to go at my own speed and it has helped me learn to deal with the stresses in my life better which helps keep the depression at bay. One thing to know is that it isn't a miracle cure. It takes a lot of work. Good luck with whatever you decide.

What is it like, I'm sure that depends on the person and the therapist

Costs, depends on the therapist, a lot work on a sliding scale

Is it worth it.. for me that is easy, it has been so worth it...

First, you must be very honest with your therapists. He or she will not be able to help you if your not honest. It will take time for your therapists to get to know you. My therapists got to know me really good. While she was getting to know me she was offerring me coping methods. She would encourage me to do things in my life differantly than what I was doing. She made me feel that I was a valuable person a good mother no matter what anyone else thought. Don't get me wrong, she would point out my mistakes when she felt it was nessasary. I no longer have insurance and can't afford therapy. She has also retired and I miss her terribly. But if you want it to work for you tell everything, good, bad and indefferant. You'll be ok.

Good Luck!

first you call someplace and schedule with a receptionist.

then you go in and do paperwork, sometimes they will have a therapist right away for you, sometimes they like to find out what your problem is first and match you with a therapist that works on those problems.

Then you go to your therapy sessions. its just you and the therapist sitting in a room talking about your problems and what the best ways to fix your problems.

one thing though there are all kinds of therapists. like some therapists are big on keeping therapy on just you and your problems so they don't offer anything about their life its just you and the therapist talking for an hour about you and your problems and how you want to fix the problem. Other therapists aren't so strict and will talk more about things they have in common with you and your problems to help put you at ease and show you that you are not alone and they can help you as long as you are going to try to help yourself. but still figure most of the conversations are going to be you talking about you and your problems and things you can do to fix your problems. usually they ask lots of questions so that you will have something to think about and work on. you might have to try therapy with a few different therapists before you find the right one but yes it does help. it helped me a lot.
