I love Joy Division. Great band, great music. Ian Curtis was a wonderful lyricist.
Although they are one of my favorites, I don't listen very often for a few reasons: 1.) They have triggered a depressive episode. 2.) Curtis committed suicide, and I tend to think of that when I hear their songs. 3.) I need the right environment to listen. His music calls for attention and I need to give it that attention to properly enjoy it. Does anyone like a band but have the same circumstances I just talked about? Or am I all alone in that feeling? Hope everyone's doing okay. ![]()

I love Joy Division too, New Order were never the same although I appreciate their motives for not continuing as JD
Again, need to be in the right mood for it! x

Haha, yeah. I'm only in high school, so I can't say I was around back then.
I've always loved older music, though. "Disorder" was always a good one, and of course "She Lost Control" and "Dead Souls".

Those were good times indeed. The Sex Pistols brought punk center stage, and many bands were influenced by them including Joy Division. A lot of people were not aware that Ian's quirky dance moves were based on his epilepsy and seizures. It got worse and caused a lot of embarrassment and depression for him near the end. He died before the American tour. The song Love will tear us apart became a instant hit. Joy Division has been credited for starting the whole Goth movement, but back then, we just considered them the Pink Floyd of Punk. They were really good times!

It's too bad a lot of people think of Ian Curtis suicide when they hear Joy Division. I wish they knew how really courageous he really was and what a musical pioneer he was. He in turn influenced hundreds of bands. He would always say his music transcends meaning, take what you want from it, they refused to explain their lyrics. It took a lot of courage for him to get on stage in front of 1000's of people and perform while still suffering from epilepsy and seizures and depression. But he did! And always delivered 150%

I saw a documentary on Joy Division last year, it was pretty awesome. As for the OP's question, Brian Jones was an original Rolling Stones member, a guitarist, who was found drowned in his swimming pool. For me, the Stones are always missing him. Even tho my crush was always on Charlie Watts the drummer who has aged wonderfully. Mick Jagger eats a quantity of oranges a day, that's why he can still dance that way at his age! Not to mention the breath of young maidens!!

I have never heard of the Joy Division. I guess I'm just too old. Oh well! But I do understand of what you are getting at. I really feel that way. In my younger days (such as childhood, teens, and 20s) a lot of the singers in the groups that I loved back then are gone now. It's upsetting to hear their music because of that.
If you can name me groups of the 60s and 70s, I can tell you if someone (or more) in that group have passed away. There are so many. There are some solo ones that are gone from that time, too. The only one I can think of that was in a group that committed suicide is Curt Corbain of Nirvana. It's a shock that I even like some of their music even though I felt too old for them at the time they came out. Oh another one I can think of is Bob Welsh, who killed himself last year. He was with Fleetwood Mac. |

I'm 57, I was there when it was new music. Joy Division was from 1976 to 1980. If all you listened to was commercial rock you would have missed them because at that time punk was not getting commercial air play in the USA, you would have had to listen to college stations to hear actual new music back then. Not that there is any thing wrong with classic rock. Jim Morrison of the Doors ODed on drugs, biggest rock star of the 60's, typical narcissist. Followed by Jimi Hendrix, and Janis Joplin all drug over doses. Back then musicians died from drugs not suicide. But will we ever know what the root of their problem was?
I loved Nirvana! I was in my 40's but was in the mosh pits with their music, was nothing for a slam dancer from the 70-80's lol.

Yeah, I am 41 and too young for it, I came to it later. New Order were around when I was a teenager but I came to JD later.
I think Ian Curtis could have been up the with Jagger and Bowie as one of the all time greats if he had stayed around, JD were very special indeed, even for their time

Haha, my problem is that nobody at school knows any of the music I listen to. "Joy Division? Who's that?" Sigh. I guess I can't expect too much with all the mainstream stuff right now. Blech.
