3 Boost Nutritional Drinks / 720 calories in all

plus Starbucks coffee / 470 calories

2 glasses of milk / about 240

so 1,430

plus chocolate sometimes, so usually I end up drinking enough calories that it adds up to about 2000. Rarely do I eat an actual meal, and if I do, I just pick at it.

can I live like this? how unhealthy do you think it is? It's been like this for about a year, but years before that I didn't feel like eating much either. I have no appetite whatsoever and have to force down nutrition drinks just so I can maintain my weight.

Hope this is an okay category to put this in. Relates to depression, so. And I hope it doesn't trigger anyone with an eating disorder. (I don't have an eating disorder.)

Loss of appetite is a depression distinctive. The nutrition drinks are better than nothing. Have you been able to discuss this with a doctor or psychiatrist?

Someone just advising "eat better" wouldn't have much of an effect on me.

Maybe you'd feel better if you just added some fresh fruits, veggies, lean meats, and healthy fats like avocado, coconut oil, and nuts to your diet. It sounds like you have a vitamin deficiency since you're consuming mostly liquids.

Also, drink lots of water, and try to avoid white foods, processed foods, and eat whole grains. You need vitamin D, vitamin B complex, vitamin C, and a good multivitamin in addition to eating the right foods. Try to get more exercise and go outside more if you can since sunlight is the main source of getting vitamin D which helps with your mood.

Also, try to stay away from alcohol, and get at least 8 hours of sleep a night. If you do this, and it doesn't help, then get on meds, or if you're on meds, get on different ones maybe? Good luck.

No, I don't have a vitamin deficiency, believe it or not. I eat vegetables and fruits about two days out of seven (when I go home for the weekends.) and yeah, that's not good. But the nutrition drinks pretty much give me all the nutrients I need or so they claim.

And Rohag, yes, I've talked to my psychologist about it, but they don't really know what to do unless they give me something to increase my appetite, but that would involve me going to see my psychiatrist, and I don't like him at all so for now I just have to force myself to eat/well, drink things. I'm just wondering, could I live a healthy life living on just nutrition drinks besides something else occasionally? Not that I'm expecting to be like this forever... that would suck.

nevergoodenough,

Sounds good to me. Are you drinking water? One of my many oddities is what I DO eat....very few things.

Is the Boost smooth? I need to increase my protein intake, which is nil.

Does your primary doc, feel you are malnourished?

If not, if you are receiving what your body needs, what's raising concern?

Yep. And it has a lot of protein in it.

I don't actually see a primary doctor. I mean I get medication from my "doctor" but I never go to see him (my mom is his nurse, yadayada, so she gets my medication for me). So yeah, no doctor. The last blood test I had was a few months ago after my liver enzymes were elevated from starvation, supposedly, and too much alcohol. But my liver function is normal now, and I don't think I'm malnourished because I wasn't then, but the last blood test I've had was those few months ago.

I'm just concerned that if I continue this for even longer I might eventually get malnourished, I guess. And it's just weird and exhausting to live like this, hating food so much. But yeah, no concern, I suppose for the moment. Thank you.

The page does, state, under physician care, but you aren't describing a clear liquid diet, which is a good thing.

No sense, admonishing yourself, to yourself, over it.

I get where I can't eat but have been able to invent "safe" foods - I can do ok as long as there isn't chewing...maybe try some soup or even make a smoothie? I think BOOST is ok...better than nothing, but maybe trying a couple other things will help stimulate your appetite?

I go for lattes in the morning because the milk has protein, I can rarey convince myself to eat before noon...I don't get sugar or flavor added.

Your calorie intake is very low, but if that is all you can eat, its better than nothing. You are trying your best and being worried about your nutritional intake is a very positive thing. Avacado's are good for you as contain the "good" fat. Best wishes.

My calorie intake is not low at all. I get 2000 calories a day at least. Which is what I need. It's a huge struggle, especially since I mostly just drink liquids, but I get enough calories almost always. Thank you, everyone. I'll manage somehow.

neverGE,

What sort of physical activity do you get? Routine? That is a huge key in not only getting your body to really crave more of what would be good for it, but in getting a handle on depression itself. I'm working on this myself. Got at least a little routine going first thing in the morning in my room, since I'm not in a situation where it is realistic to 'hit the gym' every day.

I know it sounds shallow and oversimplified to say, "Depressed? Go run a mile." But it does help. It just does. Physical activity is crucial to moods and the brain. The key is not in finding one that you like but at least in one you don't hate, and just git er dun. It will take a while to be able to make it a smooth routine, but consider the alternative...
