Meh,
Had an exhausting day with a number of issues arising that were not my fault but impacted on my work (the biggest 'bad' was the company was hit hard by a high value fraudulent transaction) in so much as demonstrating despite the controls I put in place (my current job is as a credit controller.... fun ![]() Gave my recommendations for avoiding this kind of situation again (biggest being running things by me first perhaps, as it's my job to consider 'risk')... but just felt like I was wasting my breath. And then one of the few people I actually like went and got himself suspended from work today due to losing his temper and going for another manager who is on his level 'responsibility' wise. I think that hit me hardest as I know him well enough to know this will be the last straw for him and he's likely to be looking for another job as we speak ![]() None of the above actually has any effect on me directly... but that doesn't stop the empty and heavy feeling I have right now. So yeah, piss poor day ![]()

Isn't it funny how "often" the most imcomptant morons are running the show in large companies, government agencies. Often they are socialites and nothing more. They offer no nurturing of the team or tutoring and mentoring of the individuals they work most closely with.
Hang in there. I been fired from over 40 jobs in 25 years ![]() |

How many stories did we hear after the big banking collapse in 2007 2008, that effected the UK, the US and Europe, that upper management didn't listen at all to the risk managers. The risk managers were screaming about all these real estate derivatives and so on and no one listened to them.

I liked the book/cartoon anthology called Dogbert's Top Secret Management Handbook.
Example: Manager: "This laptop computer weighs too much..." Sarcastic Engineer: "Why don't you delete files to lower the weight..." Manager (perfectly serious): "That's a thought."

Ironically the whole thing that happened to my friend has bridged (very very early stages... not holding my breath) the gap between a guy that over the past 3 months I've been on 'no talking' terms with... mutual thing, he seriously pissed me off... which in turn led to me exploding at him.
We have it in common that we like the same bloke, so I took the leap and chatted to him about our mate and as a gesture of goodwill asked his advice on the matter of sending a tentative text to our mate just to let him know I'm thinking of him. Advised to perhaps leave it till tomorrow as he's not been in touch with anyone and is no doubt still seething.

Well damn. One of the directors let slip (not intentional, he’s just very amenable and forgets who he is talking to) that he needs to get my mates keys when he comes back in on Monday.
Quick 1+1=2 scenario meaning he’s going to be fired. Pissed off and upset… I acknowledge it’s his own fault and I’m not trying to devalue the impact and fear of god he put into the other manager… or his work collegue who interceded and pulled him away… but damn… just goes to show that however many years of good work, service and general attitude can be for nought due to one minute of rage brought on by stress. Had sent him a string of texts earlier today to just say that I hoped he was alright and was thinking of him (which he replied back with thanks and that he’d see me on Monday). I know better than to give him a heads up as that could mean my job too (frustration and feeling a bit cowardly)… so yeah, put a crimp on my day ![]()

Hey Toejam,
This happened only once to me. I worked for a company for about a year and I too got fired as the company was closing shop but fired all of us to stop us from getting unemployment insurance. Greed is king you know and fraud is just another "F" word any more. So the guy I worked with built the department we worked in and was the manager of it. We specialized in high end security equipment that was custom built and maintained by our group. One day he was expressing that he didn't understand why management was out playing golf one day when they were supposed to be meeting with a large customer and maintain a contract with them. We lost that contract due to the boss's blowing off the meeting with the customer. He was fired a week later just for expressing concern about our livelihoods. I was then made furious a month later when one of the bosses walks over and starts complaining about my previous manager and saying things like "he should have known his place." I said "well we are are all concerned about everyone leaving the company and seeing the loss happening." The boss replied "you should know your place too." He walks away and this was a Tuesday morning. That Friday I was fired for "not paying attention to my work and customer complaints." Nice right? I will never understand my life, this world and human suffering. ![]() |

This time was a lot more serious and from the business point of view I guess it boils down to 'safety at work'... if people are physically intimidated by others and it is not addressed... then the company could be opening itself up to all kinds of problems as per the law. Bare in mind, this guy is built like a tank too... which doesn't really help. Short, but compact like a British bulldog. ![]() With that being said, I personally think it's been a top down f up. The guy has had a general build up of responsibilities and has been shot down when he has addressed any concerns with the ability of the staff under him... as such over the last couple of months he has had that frayed look about him... like he's juggling too many balls and his tolerance levels have dropped dramatically. Something was going to break... and it did.

More concerned for him... though, I think he'll be alright. Just another product of a negative work environment... and if anything it'll probably be good for him to be out of it... provided he lands on his feet.

He came in today to have his meeting... Was over two hours and I initially thought that was a good sign... But sounds like it ended badly and he was axed. Getting the impression he was made an example of.
Was escorted off of the premises but I was on my lunch so I caught up with him outside. He was seathing though (understandable) and gave a perfunctory acknowledgement and just said 'take care' got in his car and sped off. Going to leave it a couple of weeks then text him about meeting with a bunch of us so we can give him a proper goodbye which we usually do under better circumstances. He is a nice guy in the main and it just seems right.

I think that you did the right thing and are doing good by giving him some space. I hope you are doing well.
