I was also scared before taking anti depressants.
For me, the experience was almost like someone turned the volume down on my emotions. At first I thought that I couldn't feel anything... But after a couple days the feelings were there but at like 30% ... Not sure if that makes sense or if others experience the same. So not so scary once I went on them. Only bad part is that it cuts of the happy feelings as well as the sad. |

Holy crap. How did you pull that off? you musta got busy on the phone. good for you. you are very strong and wise for your age and what you have been through.
I hope they don't just give you fifteen minutes and pat you on the back with a new prescription. Although I do think an antidepressant would be good for you. They should do an evaluation to know your history and what you are going through and all that stuff. they should also do blood tests and at least test your thyroid. Take what you can get but hopefully they do a thorough eval. I am very glad you are going to therapy too. I did a 2 1/2 hour eval a year ago and they are making me do the same thing tomorrow. I dunno why but it is their policy and they are thorough. I should be grateful for that even though I don't think I need it.

My first pills did nothing. My second type of pills caused bad sleep which faded overtime and reduced the risks of me getting into a loop of bad thoughts... so I guess it really did help. Then the bad sleep side effect returned... So the third type of pills made me restless like hell... it was terrible... I lasted 3 days.. then I stopped taking them. The fourth I think I am allergic too... it killed my appetite (really killed) and gave my hallucinations...I think.. I stopped taking them anyway.. So the second one seems the best so far.. but as you can see these medicinens really have different effects on people. Most pills have a "backside" but it might be better than being sad/depressed. Hope I didn't scare you. |

I hope that you say everything you need to say at the doctor. Bring some pointers with you because its so annoying coming out of the doctors thinking "I should have said that". Best Wishes.

Yeah write everything down before you go. At least what questions you may have. What goals you may have. Current symptoms. I am sure you know your history by heart. I keep a mood log every day. I bring it in and my pdoc reads it and we discuss it. It gives him a very accurate picture of how I have been doing over the last month. I can't remember last week how I was doing and if it was bad I will minimize it. It works very well. I brought two months of it with me today. the last two months.

Good luck!
I can understand being nervous about going to the doctor and/or therapist. Any time I saw a new therapist or was prescribed a new drug, I was really anxious. I had an appointment last week with a new psychiatrist and was nervous, not sure why. I know that the drug companies have to cover their behinds, but sometimes, for me, the fearmongering caused by the lists of potential side effects makes me reluctant to take different meds. Like other people said, write everything down that you feel is out of the ordinary, and even how often the symptoms occur, even physical symptoms. Write down anything that you think might be relevant. The more info you have for the doc, the more they have to go on in order to give you an accurate diagnosis. |

Don't pay any attention to the side effects. Don't look them up don't read them. Your doctor should tell you if there are any dangerous ones to watch out for. We are all so different and you don't know how you will do on a med until you give it a fair shot.
Let us know how things went.

Glad you are getting some help, BrokenGlass. What a relief, almost, to have actual diagnoses and to be put on medication, to have some sort of plan, am I right?

Sounds right from what you have said. Insomnia is a common symptom of depression and it is very important to get on a good sleep cycle. Also appetite and trying to eat enough and good food.
What meds if you don't mind telling us? My opinion (some may disagree) you need the meds to help you feel good enough to really make progress in therapy and all the other things you may throw at the symptoms. Exercise, meditation, mindfulness, etc etc....

I felt exactly the same way when I first sought treatment. What we have is very real and not our faults. Seeking treatment gave me a huge sense of relief and gave me hope when I was hopeless.

Great. I keep a daily mood log that I hand to my pdoc.
Journaling is very powerful. I try to do that separate from my mood log so my mood log doesn't get so long. I have filled many notebooks over the years. I burn them because to me it is very symbolic of letting it go.
