I started counseling for my depression a few months ago but I get the impression that my counselor does not believe that I am depressed. She has never asked me why I believe I am depressed and she never actually goes into any issues at all. She has barley even skimmed the surface of whats going on. I feel crazy, like I shouldn't have to justify that I am depressed. She doesn't ask me about any symptoms or habits or what I do. What really made me feel discouraged is at the last appointment she only talked to me for 15 mins and that was the end of the session. I feel like maybe my reasons for being depressed are stupid and any normal person it would not effect this way. Is this normal? I feel like stopping and just trying to figure it out on my own.

asdfg123456, Hello and welcome to PC.

I really think it is time to get another therapist. Sometimes the glove just doesn't fit. It sounds like you are not being validated at all. There are no wrong feelings. You are not stupid for feeling depressed. I would love to see you find another therapist who will listen to you. There are plenty of them out there. Depression is not something that we can figure out on our own. Do you have a doctor and are you on any medications for this? Keep expressing yourself and please don't shut down.

We are glad that you joined. It takes a little while for your first 5 posts to appear as they are being moderated. I hope that you keep reaching out here and at home.

If you have any questions about how to navigate this site feel free to contact any community liaison or moderator. Best wishes here at PC.
Thanks for this!

Hello asdfg: Welcome to PsychCentral. PC is a great place to gain support, learn strategies for handling mental health concerns, & to make internet friends. There are many wonderfully supportive members here on PsychCentral.

With regard to the specifics of your post, yes I've had similar experiences with therapists. I no longer see one because I have never been able to find one I thought was worth the bother, let alone the cost. On the other hand, some people say their T's have saved their lives. So I guess everyone's experience can be different. Might you be able to talk with your T about how you're feeling? The other alternative may be that you just have not found the right one for you yet. One thing I would suggest is that if your T is making you feel stupid, this is not a therapeutic relationship. Here on PC, we do have a forum on psychotherapy. This may be of interest to you:

Psychotherapy - Forums at Psych Central

All new members' first 5 posts are reviewed before they become available for viewing by the community. So there may be a delay between the time that you submit your first 5 posts & the point at which they become available for viewing. However, once these initial posts have been reviewed & approved, your posts will become available for viewing as soon as you click the submit button.

There are quite a few forums in which you will be able to post. If you have not already done so, be sure to look through the listing in the Forum Index:

http://forums.psychcentral.com/

Each forum is listed in the Index along with a brief description of it's purpose. You will also see listed a number of social groups. A few of these are open to anyone to join. Most, however, require that you apply & be accepted into the group.

Also, once your first 5 posts have been reviewed & approved, you will be able to participate in our chat rooms where you'll have the opportunity to correspond with other PC members in real time. These chat rooms are listed on the community calendar showing the dates & times they meet:

What does your T say when you ask them about this?

Should I stop going to counseling?

sometimes its just not a good fit. could you change therapists? your feelings are very valid. when i had a T like that i ended up being even more depressed after each appointment. i am lifelong misunderstood. so when the person who is supose to help me feel better, valudates every other person, and do what all others do to me already, after about 6-8 months i stopped seeing her. my last thing i said to her was "can i leave now?" before her, i had never stopped therapy with anyone. and i have been in therapy since i was about 4yr.

15 minutes for a talk therapy session, sounds like I'd question their qualifications.

People have reasons for going, that is reason enough to receive a full paid session.
