Hmm I wouldn't be worried about being judged by the tattoo. I'm covered in very visible self-harm scars anyway. Way more likely to be stigmatized by those.

Me too, but I cover them up because people would notice. I am too embarrassed to have them visible for people to see, I wouldn't feel comfortable with them visible.

I like tattoos. But I personally don't want one that "signifies" my struggles with mental health issues. That is how I feel about the semi colon tattoo for me personally. If I was really enamored with the tattoo, I'd have it placed somewhere that I could personally view it but wouldn't want it in a "publically" viewed place on my body. If I want to reflect on my mental health struggles, I don't want to share it with the general public. But that's my own personal view on the issue. I have no problem with someone else putting it in a more visible place or that someone might want to answer questions about it and what it means to them. I think it's an individual choice.
That said, I'd also like to add that I don't think that Growly's mentioning that it might be important to consider how one can be judged by getting the tattoo is unsupportive or judgmental. I do believe that many people with mental health issues struggle for acceptance and understanding in the employment arena, and I think it's a good thing to consider the impact of a tattoo that's significance/meaning has become common knowledge in the world. With social media, things that were once meaningful sometimes become distorted. I believe that she only suggested that one might consider how that tattoo would be judged; I didn't read her post as judging someone else's decision to get one. I really think that we ask for people's opinion on here and can expect people to often disagree or have a different view than are own. I don't think disagreeing is being unsupportive. Just my interpretation of things . . . and probably a few will disagree! ![]() |

I'm sure a corpse who was successful in their suicide would have am opinion on this.

Under certain circumstances like the beach I do slather my arms with concealer and wear short sleeves. But most of the time I cover them, even when it's hot. Def for a job interview. |

Two of my SI scars form an exclamation point !
My tattoo is something personal to me, and to me it's a counter point to my SI scars.

If I can figure out how, I'll post pics of mine Thursday after its all done. We compromised, she's getting hers on her wrist, and I'm getting mine on my thigh (next to her name that's been there sincer shortly after her birth) so it's more for me. She might change her location at the last minute, because she's already changed her mind like 3 times whether she's getting a tattoo or a guitar as her gift. Better to change it before, rather than be permanently stuck with something you don't love. We'll see!

I don't want a tattoo, but I like looking at them because of how awesome they can look. It's OK to have a tattoo to make a statement, but something so hard to remove and so personal should not be a trend. The point of these kinds of aesthetics is to personalize them, show a part of you (literally and metaphorically), and to make them special to you. While the semi colon tattoo does show a part of people and there is meaning as long as people are aware of it, it's not as special if everybody's getting the same thing.

I have a couple of thoughts on it. I DO believe that this particular tattoo has become very popular and has the potential (no matter how abhorrent we, here, find the idea) of being abused.
I do like it as a symbol, though, and would get it somewhere that is not easily seen. It would be MY tattoo for ME. I don't have to advertise any successes or failures in my life. I have a tattoo on the back of my neck and I wear my hear down. It's of my husbands and my initials intertwined but are not visible as such unless pointed out. It's very sweet and very intimate. Some, I know, are purely decoration and that's fine if that's what you want to do. But tattoos like the semi colon are very very personal in my opinion...nothing to be ashamed of but also nothing to be advertised. |

Got this yesterday & wanted to share. It's on the inside of my ankle, so I'm able to hide it easily when I need to.
