I have my first therapy session next week and I am really nervous about it. I'm not really good at expressing my emotions. I just can't do this on my own anymore and I really need this to work.
Any advice?

Hi, Yes - be honest with your therapist. Tell her you're very anxious about the appointment and let her know, as the session goes along, exactly what's on your mind. In other words, don't agree with her just to be agreeable. You will be glad you went to the session, I believe.
Thanks for this!

As long as you are of age in the state you live in, you have the right to full confidentiality, so long as your therapist does not feel you're in immediate danger of hurting yourself or others. This is something I'm sharing since when I was starting out, I thought every less-than-desirable little thought I had was going to get me "locked up" or would be forwarded to my parents (I was 14 so I was concerned, but I had nothing to worry about!)

Don't get frustrated if your first therapist doesn't feel like a good match for you. You can always switch and it might take a few tries. It's a hard truth since it can be overwhelming, however don't feel you're stuck with your first one!

I think it's a good step you're taking, and it can be very hard to admit you may need some help. You're doing a good thing Best wishes!

Try to trust your therapist. They are there to help you, but don't be afraid of telling them off. Therapy is like medicine: you must find the one that works for you. It took me 4 tries until I found the good therapist for me, with CBT therapy and my other therapist were wonderful, just not what I needed.

Let us know how things work out. Might I ask how you chose this therapist in particular?

I don't have anything to add... You've already gotten the best advice: be honest with them, and if you are having trouble relating remember that not all therapists are a good fit for all patients. Try your best, let him or her guide you, but ultimately if they aren't able to help you feel comfortable talking or if you are not comfortable with their advice* consider that they may not be a good fit for you and seek another.

*Keep in mind a good therapist might push you out of your comfort zone a bit in order to help you but ultimately you should be comfortable and able to talk to them.

Good luck and much praise from me for recognizing that you need some help and for seeking it successfully. Hope it goes well for you.

I just did a google search of counselors in the area. I chose her because she seemed the most normal and uses a form of Christian counseling. I hope it works out.
