I'm so sick of the media spouting off about depression being treatable. It makes people think you're not trying. Well, I've tried everytihing short of ECT (my job could not handle any more memory problems) over the course of 30 years and it is just getting worse. This makes me feel even more of a failure and no one understands. It places the total blame on me. NO, depressison is not always treatable and why make people feel even worse by telling them it is?

foreverlost.......the media controls the world and even politics. i sorry you have been suffering for 30 years. my job didn't like my mental illness either and it sounds like you have tried everything. do you still take meds and see a t and pdoc. we are ill just like anyone, diabetes for example, would they be treated unfairly, no. we just need to accept the fact we have an illness and for some it will always stay with us. we're here for you and will always have a good shoulder to lean on. pm me if you like. i have worked for over 23 years..hugs to pj56

Of course you have every right to be angry. Medication and therapy must help some people, however. You're right to point out that it doesn't help EVERYbody. It sounds like the media exacerbates the problem (not to mention the producers of such medication), but the real issue is education. Since most people aren't pharmacologists, they have to get their news on the subject where they can (e.g. the media). If we're to overcome this as a society, we have to provide an alternate place to learn about this (e.g. Psych Central), or, even better, get to the point where we don't have to try to hide depression and are able to educate people ourselves. It might be a while before you start seeing out-of-the-closet depressives wearing their "Ask me about Clinical Depression!" T-shirts.
I hope this doesn't come across as snotty or anything. I'm fascinated by this sort of discussion, and would welcome it if I could come out of the closet enough to actually debate with people when they accuse me of just being lazy or apathetic. Welcome to the board! Hope you stick around and see if we might help.

If you're referring to the commercials for antidepressants, of course they say it's treatable. They're selling a treatment.
If you're talking about articles or interviews, it's important to consider the source. Cyran0

This is my first chat line ever. I grew up at a time when emotions were not acknowledged and now I'm virtually unable to admit and describe them. I am fortunate to have a patient psychologist, but after more than a year, even he is getting disgusted with me. But, I am so heartened just to know someone cared enough to reply - THANK YOU! I wish you all the best and I hope to be here for you too, if I don't feel too embarrassed about all this in the meantime...
