I think you need help immediately. Hearing voices is one of the symptoms of schizophrenia, which is a form of psychosis. Please look after yourself. Go Well!

I was always told that hearing voices inside the head, is a sign of DID, not psychosis. It makes sense if the crowd is restless you're going to hear about it. The voice hearing from psychosis is different; One usually hears them coming from outside the head.
My T told me it is possible to have psychotic alters...again, different from being psychotic.
Please ask a professional. Good luck.

I agree with Calista. In order for them to be true auditory hallucinations the voices have to come from the outside of your head, not the inside.

hello all of the asylum crew - this is something we've lately been struggling with too. calista mentioned it's possible to have alters who are psychotic. i believe that too. sometimes medication will help. do you have a t you could talk about this?

and yeah, there is also a difference between schizophrenic voices (outside) and DID voices (inside). sometimes people with DID can seem like they're psychotic because of flashbacks, body memories and all that are interpreted as hallucinations if you're not working with a professional who understands these issues.

(by the way... denial can sometimes manifest in stuff like this - suddenly starting to wonder if you're psychotic)

sending you lots of strength and safe, gentle hugs

help DID VS Psychosis
From my psych classes, and doing internship with a mental health agency and having DID myself I can tell you that hearing voices is a symptom of both psychosis and also a symptom of having DID, schizophrenia, bipolar and many other things too. you can ask your therapist for psych eval that can tell you exactly which disorder is the reason why you are hearing voices.

for me the voices were because I have DID not psychosis.

Dont let friends or other people who are not your therapist and psychiatrist or other people with DID try to diagnose you. that could be very harmful to you. like what if your friend is saying your voices are psychosis but it is from something else say its from not getting enough sleep or its cause you are dehydrated, or you have matastisized tumor. but because your friend says its psychosis you end up getting the wrong treatment and medication. or say it is because you have DID for which there is no medication for those kind of voices but you end up with some antipsychotic medication that you shouldnt be on. See what I mean. it could end up hurting you real bad in some real serious ways. If I was in this situation I would tell the friend sorry but you are not my doctors, therapist and psychiatrist. I will tell them what you think and ask for diagnostic tests and then my doctors, therapist and psychiatrist can tell me what my hearing voices are from. Thanks anyway for your opinion on what my problems are even though you are not my doctor, therapist and psychiatrist.

When ever I say that to my friends or family that try to diagnose without medical and psychiatric degrees and appropriate tests they appologize and back off and leave the diagnosing up to me and my treatment people.
Thanks for this!

((((((((((((((((((((((Asylum Crew)))))))))))))))))))) I am sorry you are struggling so much right now. I think people have shared their experiences with you and hopefully that makes you feel not so all alone. But, your experience may or may not coincide with theirs as you can see that even their posts vary between members.

Please see a professional person that can not only help you sort out what you are experiencing but can also help you with medication should it be warrented.

Good luck and I hope you find some relief.

AC,

I too agree with the others who remind you that you need a professional to help you discover what is really going on with you. It is dangerous for people to "practice psychiatry without a license". They could mean well and still be very wrong and hurtful.

If at all possible I would push to be seen sooner than Oct. I know that is not always possible, but sometimes if a person pushes to be heard they get help sooner. We call that "the squeeky wheel gets the grease". Take care!

Hey AC, I would be very honest with the Pdoc about what's happening.

I have DID, but I also have depression that sometimes goes into a Psychosis. I see and hear things that aren't there. I know it's scarey, just talk to them about what's going on.

I have to agree about pushing a bit in order to see your P doc earlier. I also agree about hearng voices with DID being different from hearing voices with DID AND depression. I also have heard voices oth inside and outside my head. I was dx's with DID fairly recently in addition to major depression (sometimes with psychotic features).
Please know you aren't alone & please try to see a therapist as soon as you can.

hi ella,

i haven't been dxed with DID either. it gets hard to believe yourself when you get invalidated, but you've got to be strong and keep on looking for someone who will believe you. if you feel your pdoc is helpful anyway, even though she doesn't think it's DID then i suppose it's ok to keep seeing her. these days there are still a lot of pdocs who know about DID but think it's about people who are like Sybil and people like that. and that it happens just in movies but certainly not in this very ordinary patient.

well, that was my ramble, but i hope you keep on looking for the help that you deserve. in the meantime i'm offering a pair of eyes to listen with, and care.

But medication can help, hang in there
