I was wondering if any of you that suffer from Disassociation have a hearing impairment? I have had a significant hearing loss since I was very young (about 5)...from what ive read disassociation is usually caused by a traumatic event(s) ...abuse, nature disasters, war, etc........i disassociate alot and in highly emotional situations its worse. Im curious if having a hearing loss can contribute to disassociation or it can be the sole cause of it? I can find any information on it....just wondering if anyone had any helfpul information

I dont have a medical hearing loss (which is not hearing due to trauma or nerve damage, punctured ear drum....)

but when I have dissociated things become muffled. I'm told by my treatment providers sometimes that happens with some people who dissociate because they are shutting out/blocking the things/people around them that they can not handle. after I learned how to "ground" myself back to the present moment my hearing improved /goes back to normal.

For me a hearing evaluation was part of my diagnostic process for DID, because they had to rule out all other medical and mental problems being the cause /symptoms of / for my dissociative issues.

Puzzle,
I am more curious if already having a hearing loss can cause someone to disassociate because they cant hear well? Or if it has to be something traumatic that causes you to do it. Does that make sense? Because disassociating is kind of like "spacing out"..."off in your own little world"...not sure how to describe it.

I have a hearing impairment in one ear from things that went untreated in childhood.
When i dissociate things become even more muffled and seem further away.

Oh alright , sorry I misread your question. I think perhaps those who are hearing impaired , it would be much easier to zone out. For me, I know I have had trauma since childhood, and because of the difficulty of the situation I had to dissociate...perhaps in a way natural hearing impairment , it may be difficult to make sense of a chaotic or hard to hear environment, making it easier to "escape" into your mind so to speak.

Im no expert but perhaps this is what you mean?

yes, that is more what im talking about. i just have very little memory from before the age of 12 and i space out alot and have always been told i always look "emotionless"....and i wonder does it have to be soemthing traumatic that caused me to be like this or can it be because of the hearing loss? but ive always had a lot of friends, been social, involved in all kinds of activities, did good in school, etc....so i dont know how much of a roll it could have played?

This is what my teachers complained about me ofen..that I was always "in the clouds" or emotionless. It could be hearing loss, or trauma or both!, it could be a mixture of things...
Do you have a therapist? would be helpful to have one to put these pieces/questions together.

Some of my parts have hearing problems. Also,I have a protector part that only uses American Sign Language, because a lot of her " little ones" are too young to talk, cant talk , been told to never talk or are too afraid to talk. If you are hearing impaired you can request an interperture ( if you know sign language) if you need to learn sign language then I would recommend that.Anyway get the help you need so you can start your healing. You can always talk to me...hugs

I am not a doctor of any kind, but I would imagine that not being able to hear would definitely be something that could contribute to dissociation. After all you do not have the distraction of noises to pull you back from your thoughts, allowing you to get lost in them.

one thing i am curious about is whether you can hear your internal voices or not

I often have trouble hearing when someone says their name. I hear the rest of the sentence but their name is muffled or garbled in some way. So I will almost always have to ask them to repeat it. I know I am nervous to meet new people, but this problem does not help the main problem at all. Also it is like the more I try to hear something, the less I can hear it. So annoying.

I had hearing problems when I was little, right around when I started preschool. I got in trouble a lot and I didn't know why but it turned out it was because I couldn't hear what the teachers and my parents were telling me, so I didn't know to follow directions. I had an operation and I can usually hear okay now but I think it did contribute to my DID to some extent. Not being able to hear in the formative years is a big deal, especially if no one realizes you can't hear or doesn't give you more direct attention.

I have had hearing loss since age 3. Now my hearing is really messed up and in crowds I fight to make out anything. Since I also am DID, this makes it worse. Since I struggle to hear it is easy for me to lose focus and dissociate off into someone else. This has greatly affected my everyday life. I am 51. I sometimes end up in a place that I don't know how I got there. When I travel, I haft to trick my brain and listen to an audio story that is interesting and eat constantly (this keeps me focused).

I don't think that the dissociation caused your did but it inhances it greatly - just like me. Since 3, I have learned to escape life and switch off and now it is really hard cause I switch constantly - so much so that a normal job is impossible. I am planning on filinf dissabliity.
