Talk to some people online, on a virtual world. I got invited to chat with someone I met, but I couldn't even remember their name. Or personal details about them. When I asked them if I acted different, they said I acted the same. Yet I couldn't remember certain personal details about them. I am not diagnosed with dissociation but my therapist said it was a possibility.
Is this normal? I already have gotten my head scanned with MRI and nothing was found. Sent from my SM-G386T using Tapatalk

Yep, pretty possible. Though our system have an agreement to only keep in a secret the dangerous stuff, all three of us that come out mostly act the same around people. (At some times -Waidth). But I've heard other people with DID having the same thing. -Scar
Don't take it as a diagnosis tho. It can be DID but it can be million other things as well. Keep on the lookout for symptoms and report back to your T. And I am not sure the MRI really shows something for DID since we came clear of that as well. As we all like to say, you know you the best, and if you is 2+ people, than you know it well. -Evee It could be you just zoning out as well. If it just happened once than that probably is. -Vlad |

the distinguishing factor in my location with dissociative memory problems vs other normal mental or medical memory problems is that the things that are unable to remember due to dissociation are associated with a trigger, a trigger in my location is defined as any positive or negative situation that causes a person to have their dissociative symptoms. examples ... for some people holidays are a trigger, they may feel numb, spaced out, disconnected and not remember things associated to that trigger. For some people abuse is a trigger,, they may feel numb, spaced out, disconnected and not remember things associated to that trigger. with DID in my location the memory problem is such that though the body born or the alter in control the most may not remember things, others with in the internal system of alters do remember, and upon integration that forgotten memory is restored\gained back as one whole person again. one thing jumps out at me in your post... the fact that you asked whether you seemed different, usually with dissociative problems in my location the dissociative doesnt ask whether they seem different or not. usually when someone is dissociated they dont care what others think of them, they dont really connect with the idea of does this person think I'm different, they are feeling numb and spaced out and disconnected. its usually after the fact when the dissociative person is fully back in control that they think back and go oh crud I hope that person didnt notice anything different, well Ill know next time I talk with them and if they mention hey are you ok you seemed different last time we talked then Ill know they noticed something. in general usually people outside the persons who is dissociating cant tell the one they are talking to is dissociated. online you dont get the visual clues so even a change in voice can seem normal on the phone and online. my suggestion is that if this was a dissociative problem when talking with this person maybe its time to take a break from them so that you can understand what part of the conversation was triggering for you so that next time it doesnt happen. ultimately only your treatment providers can say whether this is a dissociative problem in you. therefore another suggestion is my standard for things like this...contact your treatment providers, they will be able to tell you whether this is normal, dissociative or any other number of mental physical or normal problems in you. |

did you know the person for long, weeks or months? if you don't talk regularly to them, it would make sense you wouldn't necessarily remember much about them.
i have short term memory problems even without dissociation adding to it, so unless i talk to a person often or they have something that sticks out to me to set them apart from someone else, i am not likely to remember much about them, online or offline. i had a weird experience though where i was in a chatroom for several months, maybe half a year at that point or longer (don't do well with keeping track of time), and i experienced a severe dissociative episode for several months. when it lessened, i really had no memory of familiar people i had chatted with over months. it was like i had to relearn who they were, yet they remembered me. even now in general, i don't remember much about online conversations. i know i have them, some things may be remembered, but not a lot really is a day or so later. several things for me affect my memory though, so it's not always about dissociating. if i am tired from not sleeping well, stressed/anxious, or not eating right and/or dehydrated, it also can affect my memory. i have times where i will forget how to do my work after several years of doing it. it takes a few minutes of looking through things to figure it out again which freaks me out because then i worry i will mess something up. that, i think, is more a dissociative symptom, though not sure why it happens. |

Sounds like a "brain fart" IMHO. Everyone gets them ocasionally. Lol! Dissociative Amnesia is described as loss of memory/time that ia outside of the realm of normal forgetfulness. I hear ya that is can be jarring tho... it's like when you randomly can't remember the name of a song or movie that you have heard/watched many times! I'm not trying to say you don't have some kind of dissociation, tho. I have had many bouts of DA and I also have regular memory loss and forgetfulness too. It took me awhile to sort out which things were due to DD and which were just reg. disconnects.. Until, other ppl started telling me stuff that I had done or how I had acted and some waking up in places or times when I couldn't remember getting there or were the time went...I always believed I had an excellent memory! It has been really frustrating for me to know now that what I thought was a strong suit is unreliable. :/

This kind of thing happens to me pretty regularly, I don't know if it's "normal" but you're not the only one that deals with things like this.

Dissociation isn't a diagnoses this is a term. Is there disorder at the end of it, OSDD for example? Research the DSM-5. It certainly sounds like that if you are forgetting personal information then you might need to let your treatment provider know , so that they can track your continuum of dissociation 9 times out of 10 he or she is already taking note to see if your dissociation is disorder or not, pathological or not....
