(because we can't actually be bothered to find where we were talking about it)

so the united states of tara.. not what we thought at all

we thought like friends/ everybody loves raymond, but actually the setup of the show reminds us of the supranoes (you know what we mean by that?)

more like an american drama series than a commedy

we like the show though, we've had quite a few laughs

we don't like buck (maybe because we're all female, or maybe because we never had a father figure in our lives). either way, we don't like him.

still on series 1

anyone want to discuss tara?

I did not watch much of it, I did not like the fact that they were mocking, making fun of mental illness, I prefer watching movies that work towards stopping the stereotyping, stigmatizing of mental illness and those that are mentally ill.

work related this tv series also caused many problems for me and those I work with, not only having people who did not have the disorder perpetrating what they saw in the tv shows and those with the disorder feeling angry and like they needed to be like the tv show or that others did not believe they had the disorder because they were not like the show, and some felt they were doing some thing wrong if their problems could not be solved in one or two episodes in the same ways the show very easily solved the problems. ... there were even a few who committed suicide in my location because they were afraid people saw them the way the tv show was over dramatizing, stigmatizing and mocking what people with DID go through.

my point I will never watch this show again and I do not recommend it to those in my own location who ask me about it.

if you do your research on the tv show and interviews that the cast and producers did on the show they admit that this show is supposed to be funny and make fun of/ over dramatize the mental disorder and is not meant to be taken in the literal sense. many of the situations they added to the show do not happen with DID and with DID the situations that they portray are extreme characterizations of what people used to believe DID was. for example people with DID dont go around making passes as their children and their neighbors. people with DID do not go around messing up other peoples homes, people with DID do not believe their family, friends and neighbors are out to get them, hallucinate, and other psychotic/ schizophrenic\ conduct / behavioral problems. and the switching with DID is not so noticable, most people do not even realize their friends, family and strangers around them have DID and are switching.

loosen up sorry but everyone is entitled to have their own opinions. my opinions come from having a past diagnosis of DID (all my alters are now integrated) I found nothing funny about how my alters were and I dont appreciate this tv series making DID out to be some thing it isnt and causing those I work with all kinds of anxiety and trauma just because the producers wanted to make a tv show depicting a mental disorder in a comedy/ mockery way. sure their intention was to bring awareness of mental illness but my opinion is they went about it in the wrong way.

Im not saying others cant like the show or watch it. just saying my own opinion of the show and that I will never watch it again.
Thanks for this!

ive seen all the seasons, one of us really loves it, and the rest don't like the misconceptions like that it's possible to medicate DID. i do wish that they finished the show completely, and the actress who portrays everyone is super good.

here in my location mocking is defined as imitating/ copying / extreme exaggeration of something or someone. in reference to mental disorders and this show it is imitating/ copying/ extremely exaggerating the negative aspects of the mental disorder DID for entertainment comedic/ comedy- drama purposes.

one of the scenes in the show I do not find entertaining is when the show portrays one of the alters to be making a sexualized/ romantic pass /gestures ....at the neighbors, neighborhood children and the mentally ill characters own children....here in my location if this had happened in real life it would be a crime of sexual assault and incest. I do not appreciate the show portraying DID alters to be doing this kind of behavior.

if you research the show you will find interviews and news articles where the producers have admitted they are doing this and that the show is not a representation of the mental disorder and is meant for comedy/ entertainment purposes.

some people may think my views on this are a bit harsh but I see the results of sexual assault and incest every work day, Im sorry but I will never condone this kind of thing. not as a person who went through it and not as a person that works with those going through it. if I did loosen up on this issue then to me its like saying sure have at it, continue to sexually abuse children and adults, sure go ahead use mental disorders for entertainment and money rather than treating people with mental illness like human beings.

this show is not one where I can say to my friends and family .... wow what a great show, if you want to know what DID is watch this show, watch the character commit crimes against the neighbors and their own children, guess what thats what DID is... yea right not happening here.
Thanks for this!

I am a little worried that it'll be off netflix soon. I'd miss it being there. They keep taking our favorite shows off netflix.

when the alters are out, they do with the body what they want, and when tara's out it's just she's not sure of herself, it's all guilt.

yeah... how we feel too

no argument here you are right everyone has their own opinions of this show and thats all there is to it and. This tv show is highly triggering to me and I will never watch it and will never agree with how they have portrayed the characters, not saying the actors didnt do their jobs well, I enjoy the actors in other movies. just dont agree nor like this tv series. Im not saying others need to agree and not watch the show, everyone is entitled to have their own opinions of the show. like you said its a tv show... my wife likes it and I dont. thats life.

I'm afraid to watch it. I hate the term mentally ill when it's used to describe me, so to watch a show on it...can be like pointing a finger. Or it will trigger unrest in the system.

I think I will pass on this.

On the surface, I think its intended to be light-hearted humor. Some do enjoy this.

In trying to more fully understand DID, I have found this show confusing.
I don't dislike or like the show. I can see how the show does a disservice to clarifying DID life/experiences. The show, in my opinion, does not accurately portray DID.

I loved the show.I believe parts of it are a bit exaggerated, but I like that it adds a bit of humor to a very complicated disorder.I like that it wasn't all seriousness and one crisis after another and there were both good and bad times for Tara.

It's a tv show, meant to get viewers and ratings, meant to be entertaining, and I did find it entertaining.

I have not seen the last episode but given they knew the show had been cancelled Im guessing they integrated all her alters and her in tv drama/ comedy fashion. (not how integration of alters really happens) so yes is may be a bit triggering depending upon how the producers decided what way to integrate to bring the most ratings and entertainment)

I would tell how it ends, but if you've started season 3, you should just keep watching to find out.

I wish there had been at least another season because it doesn't really end, just kinda keeps you hanging, wondering what happened next.

I just finished watching the show

wow what an ending.

I feel so bad especially for chicken.... just so young

buck was bound to survive. even from the first series I knew he would
nice tara found a good therapist though

by the way, as a sidenote, I know what you mean about it keeping you hanging

i got really in to a show called utopia, about a book that could stop the world from ending, and that stopped suddenly after series 2... so after becky does turn in to a zombie, what happens next?

but, i've not lost all hope.. HBO want to do a remake of it and it may be more popular than the english version
