hey, i have depersonalization and derealization disorder. i've been dealing with this for some time, so i found some ways to ground myself when i dissociate! usually i rub the inner part of my wrist or i get myself distracted with the phone, or, sometimes, i make these (involuntary) weird noises? but all of these seem to help me ground myself.

what about you guys?

I clap my hands or slap my thighs and feel the sting and vibration go through my body. Helps me for a moment remember I am real.

I row my canoe on the lakes, go for walks, meditate, and stimulate my senses with scented candles or food scents like apples and cinnamon flavors. there might be another thread around here somewhere that can give you more ideas, I remember this coming up before here on the dissociative boards, but I do know theres one pinned in the PTSD forum, that may also help you with finding things to help ground yourself.... heres the link...

It really depends. Different things work for me at different times. Sometimes something that worked before, doesn't work the next time.

I really like yoga, and it helps to focus on my breathing and balance. I have some peppermint essential oil beadlets and they seem to help in some way. I take them with me to my sessions and pop quite a few there. My journal helps me too. Unedited journaling gets what is in my mind onto paper and sometimes I understand it and can sort it out.

Hi angelic wings.....welcome to PC!

We use distraction ourselves....or we get enveloped in to it and just watch until we can't handle it any longer. When anxiety hits is when it's worse for us, like a busy supermarket is a major trigger to us (sensory overload)...noises, all the colors, energy vibe, lights.....not even 5 feet into the door then...

I just start reading labels and fondling fruit or whatever to get it together.

I know one of our Others slaps himself to feel the cheek or thigh burn.
Thanks for this!

Right now we are in need of grounding and I am typing while holding everyone's favorite stuffies. Lori's purple unicorn, Micah's bear and Sonseearae's mountain lion cub. That helps. We also just took two deep breaths of play-doh...also helps. And then I came here.

Taking a long soaking bath, listening to music, smelling a bit of ceder, petting a pet, and eating pickles(for some odd reason).

Sour candy (jolly rancher), peppermint. Dark chocolate. Allowing m and ms to totally dissolve in my mouth before swallowing.
Ice cubes on inside of arm
Essential oil under my nose, or a slice of lemon, or menthol
Counting: start with a color, find something that is that color. Then another one. Then back thru the first two and find a third. Then back thru the first three and find a fourth.
Four square breathing, where you inhale for a count of 4, hold for a count of 4, exhale for a count of 4, hold for a count of 4. Repeat.
Concentrating on feeling the chair that I am sitting on, where it touches me.
Rubbing lotion on my hands, feet or arms
Drinking really cold water
Thanks for this!

waving our toy magic wand (no, seriously)

we have a magic wand, which we got with our dvd of elena of avilor, and holding/ waving the wand helps

as said above music deffenetly

watching the lion king, or looking at pictures of the lion king (we think that movie has healing powers)

being on here

making random movements with our hands (and sometimes to try to time them with the music)

listening to certain sounds (rain, thunder, sounds of the birds or rushing water)

Watching nature and tuning out manmade things helps. It's calming watching birds be birds, squirrels play, bugs bug....the wind gently blowing...
