My psychologist is recommending I start with a hypnotherapist. I am DID and I'm wndering what effect this might have on me. Have any of you had hynotherapy, and if so, did it help you?

Hi genn!

Yes, I’ve had hypnotherapy. Fortunately for me, my former psychiatrist is a practitioner of this form of therapy. It was very helpful in managing anxiety and fear and it helped alters find a safe, comfortable place. Eventually, he taught me self-hypnosis and I use it when stressed and in situations that may cause negative memories to arise. I hope it works as well for you as it has for me.

Genn, I have never tried it but I have heard that it is very easy to hypnotize a person with DID. We would be afraid and unable to trust it because it seems to us you would give up control to the hypnotist. Since we are afraid to try it we cannot know for sure. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

I've had hypnotherapy. I used it to heal some of my littles and for finding a safe place. I use it in meditation too. It can be a good and wonderful thing if done right.

I am in complete agreement. For me it would be a matter of trust and I have not come to that place yet. Maybe someday. The effect of the hipnotherapy

Hi! Hypnotherapy is quite safe when used with a trained therapist. Also, you say you have DID, does the hypnotherapist know this? It's very important information, the T needs to work quite slowly and stay keen to the data you give.

Yes, those with DID are dissociative! That's the basis of hypnotherapy: dissociation. So you won't be doing anything you don't already do every day...but will be safer perhaps because it will be "controlled" better than when you find yourself losing time during the day etc. (That isn't necessarily unsafe, but it must be a fearful situation when you regain your reality and realize you don't know what you just did or said?)

A trained therapist can use hypnotherapy to ease you through a block that you want to uncover but consciously you cannot seem to...

You and the therapist need to have a set goal, perhaps just one to begin with, of what it is you want from the hypnotherapy session(s.)
That will help you know that the T won't be delving into areas you aren't sure you wish to go. (BUT even with hypnotherapy, you are still basically in control (all of you perhaps at the same time) and you won't do or say anything that isn't "you" anyway.)

Even if there were any unwelcomed suggestions such as a hypnotist on stage might give someone (like clucking like a chicken) it doesn't last but a few minutes, and no one who does that has any aversion to doing so on stage, etc. They are not doing anything they wouldn't perhaps do on whim. SeeBut your T won't do such a thing, being a trained hypnotherapist (not a hypnotist.)

This is used for therapy, helping you heal. You can ask for trying it just for say 5 minutes... if you need even more sense of control.

(We have a member here who is a certified hypnotherapist...hopefully he'll see the thread. ) TC!

(((((((((((((((Genn)))))))))))))) Sounds like your psychologist really wants to help you. That's wonderful. I'd say give it a go. Please let us know how it goes.

{{{{{{{{Genn}}}}}}}}}} Yes, I was regressed at one point in my therapy. It helped me to recover some memories I had to deal with and my T was very helpful in helping me process things that came out in session as well as at home. I found out why I was always acting out of anger rather than any other emotion. It helped me deal with that anger.

I wish you the very best!

Thanks Sky.... I don't get in here as often as I used to.... but I did see this thread...

Sky is right.... Make sure your hypnotherapist or otherwise hypnosis trained and qualified therapist knows you have DID... That is very important!!!

Sky is right also on the fact that in hypnosis you are still in control at all times. You won't do anything in hypnosis you wouldn't normally do.

Hypnosis is a very powerful tool with many issues. Myself when I work with clients with issues like DID, I am working as part of a team approach. I am working together with their talk therapist to help them achieve their goal.

Feel free to post any questions you have about hypnosis or hypnotherapy here, or PM if you prefer... Keep in mind I am very busy.

Thanks,
Rick
