I've calculated my weight and my BMI shows that I am on the verge of being overweight. I want to continue with working out and having a healthy diet but every time I begin a diet I find myself having the mindset of a bulimic. I've struggled with with an eating disorder for many years especially during my high school years. When I recovered and took myself out of that cycle of pain I gained my healthy weight back and some extra. Now I'm 29 yrs old and want to lose weight. I was doing so well with working out and eating healthy and not have to binge and purge but for the last month maybe I found myself going back to bulimia again. So my question is:

How do I work on wanting to lose weight the healthy way and not turn to bulimia as my back up plan when I do over eat, on days when I don't work out I turn to bulimia also. The last month or so its been very emotional for me so I can see it now that I suddenly turned to bulimia because of the emotional stress. Currently I am working with a therapist and our focus on is to get a handle on the bulimia.

Are you in therapy to help with your issues? It seems like therapy combined with healthy eating and exercise would help alot. I know when I exercise every day even if it's only 10min I feel so much better physically and mentally.

*edit: sorry I didn't look over the title of your post good enough. I've never had an rating disorder but have struggled with poor self image all my life.

I've been seeing my therapist for almost a year now and at first I went to her to talk about other issues. The 2/3 weeks I didn't tell her at first that I was binging and purging bc I thought I could be strong enough to end it. Sometimes I would only purge once in a blue moon and won't do it again for 6months to a year. I thought I could handle it on my own until I found myself doing it everyday even 2-3 times a day. I told her and now our focus will be handling my stress, coping differently with the focus on the bulimia. I've been doing so well until the last month. I still want to lose weight but I am scared I will turn to bulimia again.

Yes someone with an ed can lose weight in a healthy manner. I would look into seeing a dietician who could help you with that.

I guess I'd recommend talking to a doctor about healthy diet/exercise/weight loss things and then continue working with the therapist to make sure it doesn't veer over to ED. I agree that the numbers should probably be removed. Best of luck!

Hi:

With the therapist and a nutritionist you'll be ok.

One can loose & also maintain a healthy weight after dealing with an ED. It helps to have someone you are accountable to regarding your choices & the things you do (a nutritionist/therapist/etc).....but it's really your desires & choices that will make the difference in the long run.

Hope you find the best way to achieve your goal in the healthy way.

I know it's hard because at times when I gain more than I want, just restricting for a little while brings my weight back down to where I feel better about it......but I find I feel so much better to just maintain that good weight with healthy eating. Hopefully you will be able to do that also once you get to your healthy weight.

I think a nutritionist would be the best place as they can suggest the right foods for your metabolism do loose the weight at a healthy rate. It's much harder to do it on your own.

Your best bet is to work with a therapist, dietitian, & personal trainer that knows your history. The YMCA has a healthy weight loss program which you may be able to get for low/no cost as it's medically needed.

It’s psychological; of course going on a diet the healthy way is feasible though before you can do that I suggest you have to look for counseling. This will help prepare your mind and settle your thoughts positively.
