|
I am an artist, not the best out there but an artist. I have some talent im not bad. Anything artistic i seem to be able to pick up to a degree and learn relatively easily. So my question is, what is the difference in being talented and gifted?

Hard work, practice, persistence! Do they teach you nothing at school in your country?

I think gifted means you do not have to do hard work, practice or be consistent. It is intrinsic, you just born with it like an prodigy. Talented means you have an underlying natural skill that needs to be honed and practiced.

I cannot agree, 8SB has already proven talent. Research shows that once you have a ticket to the match so to speak, how well you do after that depends on whether you have opportunity and enthusiasm put in enough graft for long enough. If you have, say a part-job you will find it harder to put in the required input, but if have say wealthy relations and good contacts it will be easier. No one is successful on their own. It is a myth that some are so gifted they do not need to try.

The "talent" is a gift, so they basically mean the same thing, as others have said. However, to be successful...to take your talent to it's maximum potential requires hard work, persistence, and a deep desire to express yourself through your work...whatever it may be.

My art teachers didnt intervene with me and my art. They told me to follow assignments and gave me freedom to do as i pleased. I was also not forced to do anything not even maintain a sketchbook. I was also allowed to turn assignments in as late as i wanted and still got As on them where other students had to obey deadlines.

The times I've heard "talented" and "gifted," the distinction was very clear. Many people have talent... not so many are gifted. I think that regarding talent, there is always a plateau regardless of how much hard work you put in to develop the talent.

What i enjoyed from that article was the bit about the 90% percentile, and the fact that giftedness is basically judged based on your skill level before practicing properly.

I doubt if Michaelangelo was particularly obsessed with being talented or gifted. He was, however, obsessed with his work....and the world has greatly benefited from it.

Reasons for my obsession are not important and honestly its rude to even bring it up. I am on this website for mental health reasons.
Using the internet to find answers from people when its possible i can put a thread up and have a talk with a 'actual psychologist in the field'. I read about artistic people on the internet all the time, the internet articles out there are all fuzzy and not clear. |

That is a good point you make, but you might be a trifle optimistic finding a professional in the field on a forum like this, but on the other hand you could email such a person and ask them if they would not mind sparing a little time to answer, or at least point to an authoritative source a question that you have - consider: The National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented (NRC/GT) 1990-2013

its not unrealistic to think a psychologist would get on a mental health forum thats been popular for a decade. Considering there a forum at the bottom for them already.

IMHO - A hundred years from now, if any of us is to be remembered, it will be for what we produced and contributed to society in a positive way....not for whether we were called "talented" or "gifted" or whatever.
