I am sitting in belle tire. Nice leather chairs. And big screen tv blasting dumb talk show. So loud that it’s impossible to concentrate. I brought a book. Forget it. Didn’t bring head phones or blue tooth so I stuck with this. Why? Full volume? There are other people here watching tv. So I can’t just turn it down. Smh. Why????? Why so loud???? My dealership plays quiet tv on the background. Why are these guys blasting it??? Why big screen?

I can DEFINITELY identify with you and what you wrote, having experienced something so similar. And not just once. Sigh

I'm sensitive to loud noises, too. Sometimes others that seem unbothered actually are a little, though. Or, wouldn't mind if it was lowered a bit. It is often worth politely asking others. If they say they are ok with it lowered, it can be fine to do so a bit or ask a store employee to.

They also did this at the medical center that I used to attend. WHY fill the waiting room with ridiculously loud (and abysmal) daytime television??? Before a medical appointment, which even for normies, can be an anxiety-raising situation?

I will never understand some things.
Thanks for this!

You might be on to something.

But then again I had doctors appointment yesterday and they had a peaceful animal snow on tv at a quiet volume. I’ve been with this doc many years and he never blasts loud dumb stuff. Always something not bothersome and quiet. My dentist office plays smooth jazz quietly. She often asks how people like the music so she knows if it’s not bothersome. But now I start thinking both these doctors are immigrants, (from completely different sides of the world) so that’s maybe why “American way” doesn’t apply to them?

Also US is so very diverse. I live in a very diverse area and every few miles there’s a different culture and life style. Before getting to this place to replace my windshield I was at my dealership doing some other things and there was nothing blasting. I mean they had TV there but it wasn’t loud or obnoxious. So it might be somewhat cultural too even within American way.

Overall I find constant tv on bothersome. I only turn tv on when I plan on sitting down watching a particular show or movie. I once was doing door to door political canvassing with a colleague. It was about noon on Sunday. Every person had tv on. I commented and she didn’t understand why I was so surprised. She said it’s normal. Not normal for me. Then again she is US born. But so is my husband but he’s not blasting tv all day. So I tend to think it’s life style or something not just American in general.
Thanks for this!

Oh for sure, I hear you divine totally. You're right. Me, I was just trying to be funny with my 'American way' comment. I do know what you mean though, even here in NZ I've experience similar things.

My honest answer though, as to why they'd blast the TV like that would be that they probably weren't even aware that it was loud. And I bet you at some point in the day someone would've said 'hey turn that effing TV down it's loud.' Or something like that. So I'd put it down down to lack of awareness really.

Sometimes people can blast TV without realising when they have impaired hearing.

Sometimes I think it’s to drown out other sounds.

I don’t like it either!

Earlier this week I had minor work done on my car that didn't take long to do. I was the only one in the waiting room. They had a large-screen TV and it was pretty loud. I don't know what program it was, but it was some kind of adventures in skiing. But then there were commercials that seemed to be done in a "public service announcement" type format; and the commercials were from the company I was doing business with. It seemed like the commercials were louder than the skiing show. I've heard on regular TV that the volume is turned up for commercials, which is why commercials seem louder than the shows.

I find that television's volume turned up loud is annoying even if I like the show.

You are funny. The thing is other folks in a wait room enjoyed it and commented about what was on tv. They giggled and had a good time. Hahah maybe there is something wrong with me.

My husband likes to jokingly say “it’s just how Americans do it” about random things including people being loud. I usually say “no it’s just you”. 🤣 Right now he is putting some furniture together and is blasting music with volume all the way up. Hahaha

It’s all just random vent. I don’t think I’ve ever heard tv that loud in a public place. Took me by surprise

I am very sensitive to noise and hate it when the volume is turned way up in places like waiting rooms too. It happens in this part of the world too!

No, it's not only the "American way". I'm in Canada, and it's happening here, too.

The same phenomenon is often true in grocery stores and places like Walmart. They play their music far too loudly. I've even mentioned it to managers and I 've been given some surprisingly rude responses.

Society in general has become very numb to other people's concerns.

It was mostly a joke about “American way”. Mote. of. soul explained in a subsequent post that he was just being funny.

It does play louder here though than in Europe. I travel to Europe several times a year and in general nothing is as loud. I’ve been to medical facilities there many times (not car shops though), there is nothing playing usually or something very quiet. I think and in my experience people watch tv here more so they watch it in the doctors offices too, which is weird. Maybe for distraction but it’s annoying

I am hearing impaired, so I don't notice as much. I think a number of people now have some impairment because they listen to such loud music, especially in their cars. I and they can have our windows up, and I still hear it!

Or in their headphones. At the gym I used to like to blast my music in my headphones while working out. One time I turned the volume up to what didn't seem too loud to me, and a message came up on my phone saying it was too loud and could damage my hearing and was I "sure I wanted to increase to that volume?" 😂
