I realized yesterday that the heat in my apartment wasn't working. I called the maintenance people and this is a type of problem they are supposed to have someone come right out to fix. Then I had to go to work. I came home late last night to find out that my heat is still not working. Since it was cold last night my apartment cooled off quite a bit. Now I have to wait for the sun to heat it up as much as possible. This really makes me angry! Part of my rent is to pay for heat. You would think that would mean that the heat would work.

Grrr. I remember no heat calls weren't taken very seriously until I could afford a better apartment. So when the heat went out and they wouldn't fix it I plugged in an electric heater. The rent included electric...bwahahaha!

Hope it gets fixed soon.

Googly, what state are you in? Some states have laws that the land lord has to have functioning heat in the building by a certain date, no excuses. Lots of folks don't know that and landlords will try to wiggle out of it by sayig yo have to use space heaters, which are actually not acceptable. (usually). Also, while you're awake, if you have and electric oven turning it on low and leaving it open can help too. Just remember not to leave it on or open when you leave or when you go to bed! HUGGGGSSSSSSS!

Googley, I hope the heat gets fixed soon. I just turned on the heat for the first time yesterday this Fall. I told my daughter we had to make it until Oct. 15 to save on the heating bill. We made it! I think it is within your right to ask for some kind of credit to your rent since you were without heat that you are paying for. Keep track of how many days you went without heat you were supposed to have.

Hope you can keep warm. Bundle up.

Thanks everyone. The thing is that the heat is controlled by the university. The heat technically is on, but for some reason it isn't working in my apartment. Ugh. It could be worse. And I am bundling up. I just wish there was some way to know when they were going to get it fixed. It's the not knowing which is the worst. It is funny because Friday morning before I knew that my heat wasn't working, I was talking with my T about how it was hard to get out of bed in the morning when it was cold in the morning. About how the dash to the thermostat to turn up the heat really sucks. Now I'm just staying bundled up all day.

What type of heat does the building have?

The apartment has steam radiators. (Or hot water, not sure). But they also pay for the electricity. All the stuff is included. I don't think we are allowed to have space heaters. And most of the time I don't need it. I just wish they were quicker to get to problems.

You don't have to tell them about the heater...

Electric blankets are good.

So I called this morning to check in on the status of my repair. I was told that the maintenance order was closed because someone had come out and the order was passed on to the HVAC people. I was told that the person contacted the HVAC people and someone should be out to take a look within the next hour (this was about 9:30). I was leaving shortly after that for meetings and class. I didn't get back home until 5pm this evening. Guess what: NO HEAT!!!!!!!!

It would be nice if they would contact me or leave me a note about when they expect it to be fixed.

You would think with most of the day to fix the problem that they would be able to fix it. I will call them again tomorrow. I will definitely be talking with the apartment office about getting a reimbursement for my rent since the heat isn't working. I can feel the apartment temp dropping as I sit here writing this.

This Sucks!

I would take your advice and get a heated blanket or a space heater, but my finances are tight and I just don't have the money to pay for it.
Thanks for this!

Greetings,

Hang in there and try to stay cool about it. Patience, as well as understanding, on your part, will greatly reward you, later.

Have a good one.

So, I came home last night to a message that they would come today and finish fixing the problem. Annoying, but I thought the end was in sight. Then I come home tonight thinking, yay warm apartment finally!

NO!

The heat still does not work. And not only does the heat not work, but now there is water (a lot of it, I should use a bucket) dripping down in my closet. The person used one of my towels to dry up the water, but by the time I got home it was totally soaked and dripping down to the other shelves. I probably lost at least $100 of stuff (some of it was medication which I pay out of pocket for). It would have been nice if he has at least moved everything off of the top shelf where he put the towel down. UGH! It's just getting worse, not better.

Wishing for you that your heat is fixed soon before the icy cold sets in. Never be afraid to complain to those who are "Supposed" to do the right thing by you, their reason d'tere is to supply you with what you are paying them for. If they want the prestige of owning rentals then they must maintain them

If it is hot water, you might have air bubblles keeping the water from getting int othe radiator. see if you can find a radiator key or wrench to open the vents (valves at the end of the radiator) and let the air out until the water starts to come out. Carefull you don't get your hand in the way of the water or the steam! Best let a person do it who has done it before. I do it all the time here, but we have lower temperature in our radiators than the radiaotrs tend to have in the states.

I reported the water to the apartment office, and they were like: you should have called public safety last night because that is considered an emergency. The bad news is that the apartment office said that because it is not their responsibility to do the maintnance (it is a university property) I would probably not get reimbursed for the lack of heat for what has now become a week. .

Lonegael- I don't want to do anything to the heat that might make them blame me for the problem. As this is student housing, they should get this taken care of by maintenance.
