It always seems to be a certain food that Thanksgiving would not be complete without.
How about telling about your favorite..maybe some history behind it and if you want share a recipe?

Now I am not the primary Thanksgiving cook I am expected to bring a vegetable platter or rolls or *green gunk or green bean casserole.

I don't know what it is about green jello. My mom always made green jello with graded carrot, pine apple tidbits, celery with a dollop of mayo on the top. My bother in law would always give my mom a bad time about it. It was entertaining how much humor he could get out of it.
If anyone has a recipe to share a recipe on Green Gunk I would love to hear it.

*Green gunk is a jello salad (usually green) with whip cream and other ingredients. It is really too sweet for the meal but like sweet potatoes with marshmallow who cares.

Everyone has a different recipe for green gunk so I would like to hear yours.

My grandma always used to make Waldorf (sp) salad. It was a whipped cream kinda base with nuts and apples and such. Yummy desert. I also like stuffing (although I'm not sure how that's going to work since I can't have wheat anymore).

I discovered how to make cranberry sauce 4 years ago and it has become a staple every year. So much better than that canned stuff. It's super easy to make too. It's just one bag of cranberries, one cup of sugar, one cup of water. Mix the one cup of water w/the sugar in a pot until boiling. Then add the cranberries, turn off the heat once the berries pop and voila...cranberry sauce. Very yummy.
Thanks for this!

my mom always asked me to make stuffed celery 'cause i wouldn't screw it up! it's real simple...cream cheese, crushed pineapple (juice drained), a tad of mayonaise and lots of chopped pecans. mix it all and plop it onto cut pieces of celery. deeee-licious!

but sure can't wait for the turkey, dressing, pecan pie.....mmmmmm
Thanks for this!

If it is carbs with gravy then it is my favorite part of my holidays!

2nd would be anything my old T (from about 15yrs ago) serves at her holiday party... It is worth the 15,000 mile commute just for her leftovers! OK, if there are any... unless they get an ice storm it is GONE by the end of the night.

Darn... now I am craving a plane ticket and home made stuffing...Crud! Knew I shouldn't read this post!

Perhaps we need a craving warning on this post like the trigger warnings on other posts!

homemade yeast rolls! I learned to make them and they are the best. Don't have my recipe with me though.

I love the smells of Thanksgiving...the turkey, the sage, the celery and onions...fresh baking bread...and mashed sweet potatoes with little marshmallows melted and browned on top.

they come from the grocery store !!!!!

I love sweet taters with just themselves and butter. I make them in the mirowave oven just like white potatoes! When it is just the two of us, it is way easier than making an entire casserole.

This year I'll do a combination of yukons and yams (cooked in the nuker) and just sort of swirl them together after I smash them with a fork on a plate. Just a dab of fat free sour cream in the regular ones and a dab of sugar free maple syrup and butter in the yams.

Never did them this way before, but I know they will be yummy.

I have a green gunk recipe that came from my grandmother:

One pkg lime jello
One pkg lemon jello
One carton cottage cheese
One can crushed pinapple
One pkg broken walnuts

Make jello per usual, let set slightly
Add other ingredients

This is a high protein, delicious side dish that surprises everyone with how delicious it is, assuming you like all the ingredients.

And, wallah! Another surprise green gunk recipe!!! Enjoy!

Oh my. That "green gunk" you all are referring to is called "Heavenly Hash." It can also be pink, depending upon the jello, or cherries. I've heard it called Hawaiian Fruit Salad, but not sure it came from there. I think Jello created it in the 70s.
It's a great little dessert salad, esp. for holidays or summer heat.

Ingredients:

Serves: 8, Yield: 4 cups *

* 4 ounces gelatin, any flavor
* 3/4 cup boiling water
* 1/2 cup cold water
* ice cube
* 1 cup non-dairy whipped topping or 1 cup sour cream
* 20 ounces crushed pineapple, drained
* 11 ounces mandarin orange sections, drained
* 1 cup miniature marshmallow
* 1/4 cup walnuts or 1/4 cup pecans, chopped

Directions:

Prep Time: 15 mins Total Time: 15 mins

1. Complete dissolve gelatin in boiling water.
2. Combine cold water and ice cubes to make 1 1/4 cups.
3. Add to gelatin, stirring until slightly thickened.
4. Remove any unmelted ice.
5. Add whipped topping, blending until smooth.
6. Stir in pineapple, mandarin oranges, marshmallows, and nuts.
7. Pour into serving bowl or individual dessert dishes.
8. Chill until set, about 2 hours.
