yeah...its around 40 to 50 dollars to get one kind of highlights thats it you go to a hair salon. When you hair grows out it won't be there of course but as long as you have the hair you highlighted, it will be highlighted. The more colors you put in your hair the more it costs of course. Hope this helps...=d

The process can be a little time consuming, but is quite simple. They'll take the sections of hair to be highlighted and underlay them, one at a time, with aluminum foil. Then they basically use a special paintbrush and apply the hair dye, wrap the hair section in the foil and let it set. You might sit under a dryer for a while, and then they'll wash out the excess. A good quality dye from a salon can last a long time without fading, and never quite fades away.

Yes the cost varies depending which salon you go to. It grows out and if it's a subtle highlight, it won't be too obvious. It's not as popular for men as it was before and I don't recommend getting really obvious looking ones.

Some salons will still do highlights by putting a plastic cap on over your hair, and pull sections of hair through the cap in places. Then apply the highlighted color to these sections, so the color does not go through the cap to the other hair. This can be less expensive but most are doing the foiling now as described above, painting the color on with a brush, wrapping in foil, and sitting under the heated dryer for a bit.

Either process can range from $35-$80 depending on your area and the salon you go to. Call around to price it and ask which method they use. The disadvantage of the cap is that it can be uncomfortable, especially if your scalp is sensitive, as the hair is actually being pulled through and can tug at the scalp, and the tool they use to pull can be annoying if they are not experienced, but is less expensive. Foiling is more comfortable but usually a bit pricier, not by much though.

Highlights will last as long as your hair is. New hair growth, which is about a 1/4 of an inch a month, roots will show in anywhere from 4-6 weeks depending on growth and the color chosen.

As an example, the highlights I have now are not far off from my base color, very subtle so the growth is not as noticeable and I can get them redone every 4-5 months without there be much notice. It may show more though depending on how much difference in color you want, needing to be done more often if the color difference is more significant. Some do it religiously every 4 weeks, some about 7 mos. Depends on the color, price, and how you like your roots.

We own a salon and spa - we used to use the cap and I had it done this way - but it really hurts, especially in the temple area. We use re-usable highlighting papers -you paint it on then fold the paper in half.

Lynn, I like this method better myself. It never occurred to me that the caps were being used and I made the mistake of not thinking to ask, never occurred to me, it had been so long seen I had seen them. I made an appointment at a new place to discover they used caps still. Oy. Someone who is experienced, it doesn't have to be painful but this is rare. The foiling or wraps are much more pleasant. Too bad can't come see you!

LOL Fresia and Notz. We haven't used the cap in years but I'm sure some still use it and pain varies on tolerance and the person being gentle. The nice thing about the highlighting papers is....they can be washed and re-used.

For teenagers(girls) and young women I like the look of coloring just a few tips with pink or bright red. It looks really nice on very straight hair. I'm going to ask my 13 yr old if she wants to try this look.

Hi ariesmars,

What type of hair do you have?
My hair is super fine (medium to light brown in color) and I have never had much luck with salon highlights because they always leave the stuff in too long and so it comes out like bleached streaks. Maybe its too strong for super-fine thin hair?
So instead I use the product Sun-In and it works really well and the price is great. But if your hair is thicker or darker then a salon would be better. Do you know anyone who has highlights you like? It's good to find someone you already know does a good job...
Good luck.

I think the look in the picture is nice but the base color is much darker than your natural color so there won't be as much contrast or look exactly like his. If you do want to get it done, bring in that photo and tell them you want this shade as opposed to a bleach blond highlight. I don't think you would like the light blond highlight look and I don't think it's appealing. I agree with the look on the photo but remember it will show growing out in a month, so at first don't do too many in order to make sure you like it.

I just thought of another look for you..."LOWLIGHTS". Since your hair is medium brown, lowlights would add dark color, rather than 'bleached' color. The process is the same, the cost is the same I think.

Guys don't have to be left out of all the fun by the way
Thanks for this!

well it is quite cheap here (depending on the hairdresser you hire for the job) but you can find it with 30 euro the cheapest. highlights are great make your hair look more interesting those colors that are close but different. but make sure you will get highlights very close to your natural color cause if you want something quite different you will have to do your hair again and again quite soon cause the roots that will come out will look like hell

In my personal experience, I love accent highlights ( or stippling for short hair if you have it) by Ulta beauty, a national chain beauty store/salon. It's the most bang for your buck, beautiful but not too pricey$$

It's a drop dead beautiful salon and beauty store to boot!!

look at my salon highlights! what do you think? I like them very much, only had 4 thin strands per foil with 5 foils.

I think your highlights look really nice - not too obvious which is what it should be. Since your hair is light brown the golden blond accent it well.
