So I have these ideas about what life is about. They're not necessarily original (as evident from the thread name), but nevertheless, I believe in them, so I wanted to share them with people and they can share their opinions with me.
For those not familiar with these terms, they're from Steve Pavlina's blog and are used to describe two distinct mindsets that people resonate with when they go about things in life. (These terms are loosely defined and the following is my personal understanding of them) Darkworker: Egocentric. Driven in life to ascend as high as possible using the most efficient and effective means possible. Disregards other people and tends to see them as either obstacles or stepping stones. Sees diplomacy as a weak excuse exercised by those who lack the strength to make a "real" difference. Characterised by Power and Control. Lightworker: Altruistic. Driven in life to aid other people and society as much as possible usually at one's "personal expense". Frequently supports other people in their personal struggles and promotes peace and freedom. Sees absolute control as superfluous and instead encourages flexibility. Characterised by Love and Freedom. In basic terms: Darkworker = Selfish, Lightworker = Selfless You may notice that I didn't use words like "good" or "evil" in my descriptions, as I don't personally think that these two mindsets are moral-based, in the same sense that Yin & Yang do NOT represent good and evil, but rather complimentary yet opposite forces that form a whole. I don't believe that anyone is one extreme, but rather a blur between the two, with an innate preference of one over the other. Personally, I am, and have always been more of a Lightworker. I have always felt uncomfortable treading on people to get higher in life. This does not mean I would never do it, just that it clashes with my internal moral compass. However, what if we were to add a moral parameter to these two mindsets? A good and an evil? Well, then we get to modern society and its past, present and future. Those who are familiar with Steve Pavlina's book, will know his "Tri-Force" of Intelligence. If Lightworking is Love and Darkworking is Power, then the other key component is Truth - and the injection of truth (or lack thereof), determines the effect of the other two components. In other words, AWARENESS, whether personal or collective, determines the course that society took and will take from now on. I used to attribute awareness to Lightworking, as I was "all too familiar" with the "oppression" and "brainwashing" that went on in the world. However, the more I thought about it, the less true it appeared. Does "I don't need a reason to help others".... really actually HELP others? What if suddenly everyone dropped everything and devoted their time to helping people in need and sacrificing themselves so that everyone in the world became equal? Would that help the human race? A resounding NO - and so, that's where the notion of Yin & Yang came into the equation, along with its "moral-less" property. In other words, Lightworkers AND Darkworkers are needed in the world, and I don't just mean different people. It applies to the individual. "Light" Lightworkers and Darkworkers promote the truth and nothing but the truth. They spread the truth as far and as hard as they can because they THEMSELVES are aware of the good that the truth does for the world. "Dark" Lightworkers and Darkworkers hide behind falsehood and either passively or actively promote ignorance. They lack the awareness to identify what their actions are actually doing to society. So I wanna know what you are. Are you a Light Light, or a Dark Dark, or a Light Dark or a Dark Light? (I'm sure not many people will pick Dark-anything but if they do, it will make for an interesting discussion) :3 Your thoughts please... |

I am a Light Light one...
It's not a pretty good thing at all... Always thinking about other people and leaving yourself aside is pretty much like killing oneself each and ever day... My sister is a Light Dark one..

Dark Dark i suppose - even at school when given a psychosymetric test it was revealed that i cared little for anything but my own success - thats not to say i don't care about others at all, in fact my BPD would suggest i care a lot about what others think so perhaps ive been conditioned by a brutually ambitious upbringing to think more about myself when push comes to shove but ive never used others as a means of getting head - my success has come from me and me alone. I think these terms are a bit too narrow and don't quite accurately describe people as a whole, we're much more complex 'fluid' beings. Interesting thread though, thanks.

I didn't want to blabber on too much, but I don't think you can be completely selfish or completely selfless and be happy/be successful, because ultimately they mean the same thing. Helping yourself=helping others. Sure there are always power imbalances in everyday life, but in the grand scheme of things, if we want to keep flourishing as a race, we need to both help each other and improve ourselves. Thanks for you reply though, it's cool to hear a "dark dark" opinion ![]() |

![]() Basically, a Lightworker is Selfless and a Darkworker is Selfish. But it's more in the sense that a Lightworker focuses on others while the Darkworker focuses on themselves. So, a Lightworker GIVES and a Darkworker TAKES. From this, we could generally say that a Lightworker is CONSTRUCTIVE and a Darkworker is DESTRUCTIVE. I like using analogies to explain ![]() You have a good side and an evil side. BOTH sides have Knights and Black Mages and BOTH sides have Technicians and White Mages lets say. The Knights and Black Mages are the Darkworkers. They destroy things. The Technicians and White Mages are Lightworkers. They build/restore things. Both Good and Bad sides need both Lightworkers and Darkworkers to attack their enemy while taking care of and healing their party at the same time. So, Lightworker and Darkworker are your CLASS/JOB, whereas whether you are on the Good side or the Evil side is your ALIGNMENT. Usually in these games, the Good side is trying to build and improve civilisations/defending against hostile parties. The Evil side is trying to destroy everything and send everything to hell, so to speak. So yeah, I don't know if that makes things clearer? lol I think this is an interesting discussion though ![]() |

"What if suddenly everyone dropped everything and devoted their time to helping people in need and sacrificing themselves so that everyone in the world became equal? Would that help the human race?
A resounding NO" Your very interesting post prompts me to ask how do people 'become' equal? How are you defining equality. and Why wouldn't people "helping others in need and sacrificing themselves..." help the human race? |

The key point I was trying to make is if that's ALL people did, and never attended to themselves. Imagine you are a manager within a company. You are in charge and have power over other employees beneath you. However, you and all the other managers suddenly drop your leadership roles and start focussing on helping your employees. Instead of doing important strategic planning and business analysis to keep the business turning, the "managers" focus on only helping the employees with their daily admin work - they even agree to distribute their salary with their employees. To make things even worse, they share their company secrets with their competitors, and always over-provide to their customers. Whenever there is a customer complaint, they would drop everything and make sure the customer is completely satisfied. How long would this company survive? Probably not very long... So, a slightly long analogy xD, but if everyone did this, it would put a massive strain on the human race. There would be some pretty awesome displays of self-sacrifice and martyrdom towards the people in need, but pretty soon people would start dying off in huge numbers XD Again sorry for the long-*** explanation! xD But you are right, we need to think about what we mean by "equal". I think equal in terms of "selfish and selfless" as opposed to equal status is more beneficial to people at large. You have to equally help people as well as help yourself if you want to make a lasting contribution to society, right? |
