I have noticed that when I'm depressed I do not want to be exposed to sunshine. Like right now I need to go buy some groceries, but I just dread going outside in the sun. This happens a lot to me.

Anybody else feel like that?
Thanks for this!

I get the exact opposite, I feel a little hypomanic because I have programmed myself to believe that sun is a holy diety floating in the sky. An awesome representation of a creators power.

Honestly though I am not that crazed towards the sun anymore.

I am a little disappointed you have to feel that way in the sun...maybe you prefer the moonlight?

Sunlight actually depresses me. I feel most at peace and even cheerful when it's cloudy. Nobody understands when I try to explain that to them. Sure, sunlight may be physically (and through the physical, mentally) good for me in moderate doses, but there's absolutely no denying that sunny days bring me down.

Yes! Here I live in California, with the sun beating down so much of the time. I feel like I live inside of a microwave oven. The sunlight causes me to feel more anxious and depressed.

I dislike the bright sunshine and heat. My favourite is a brisk fall day with clouds in the sky and leaves falling about me.

I cant stand the light from the sun, although I love the heat from it. I dont have to worry about that here as it is dark 4:30 in the afternoon.

I prefer sunshine to the dull gloomy gray day it is today. Sorry if I seem weird.

I went through a few months where I only went out at night, when I was at probably my lowest point and wanted to deal with as few people as I possibly could. When I finally started going out during the day again the sun actually hurt my eyes and forced me to squint, I felt like a mole person seeing the sun for the first time heh. Couple that with my pale Irish skin and the sun ranks pretty high on my list of enemies, but as I've been trying to get out into the sun more I've been more tolerant.

It's like that saying about people who are scared of the dark, spend some time in it and suddenly it's not so bad.

Thanks, all
My favorite weather is cloudy gray skies or those milky white winter skies (as some others have mentioned too). I notice it is connected with depression. This is one of those days for me unfortunately. I'm going to try to ride my exercise bike to see if that helps. I feel like I have a hangover, but I no longer drink and I got plenty of sleep. I'm all shaky and can't focus. Usually exercising helps if I can make myself do it.

The sun bothers me sometimes, I have to admit.

But I think that is because here in Ireland we don't see much of the old sun during the year, and when it comes out, my eyes are so used to gray and darkness that it really bothers my eyes when driving.

From around December throughout to February, daylight starts at around 8 in the morning and by 4 pm it's already dark. It sucks...

I feel better now, because I rode my exercise bike. When I don't exercise, my mood goes down and down. It's been hard to exercise, because I hurt my knee six months ago. I've always had fragile knees, but now they are even more fragile. I have to balance between fighting depression and injuring myself. If I ever get where I can't exercise, then I am in big trouble because it is the only thing that helps my mood.

The dislike of sunshine often happens when I become depressed. I also don't like the wind to touch my skin. I can't make eye contact with people. I usually wear a hood even if it's hot outside. I feel like I want to curl up in my closet. ... Maybe I'm part vampire LOL

^ So anybody else feels like a vampire when they get depressed? I feel like one of those "gothic" people from the 80s except I'm a bit too old for that (49? - I can't even remember my age now LOL) Luckily I feel better today.
Thanks for this!

Oh yeah, exercise improves my mood too! I also have a knee problem (and a back problem to go with it), so for me it's only a gentle walk, as recommended by GP and physiotherapist.

But if the sun comes out (or when the rain stops) I'm like "... darn it! now my excuse to sit on my buttocks is gone! ...). I think I'm getting a bit lazy, but I find it hard to drag myself out of the house sometimes.
Thanks for this!

yeah, I feel that way too, but more resentful instead of guilty. I usually exercise inside, so sunshine isn't a requirement. What I feel is angry that I can't ride my bicycle outside like I used to. It is hard now, because I don't have the energy. I used to wake up about 3 am and ride my bicycle in the dark before going to work. It was peaceful out there and not too many cars. I haven't done that for almost 10 years though. I don't have the energy. I don't mind the sun as much when I can ride a bicycle. It makes me angry when I can't.

Now my knees limit me where I need to be very careful. I can't even walk very often, because it hurts my knees.

I definitely identify with the feelings of guilt when I don't exercise. LOL I guess I don't feel guilty as much, because I skip so often that I no longer expect it of myself.

I have a love hate relationship with the sun. The heat and direct sunlight tend to cause my SLE symptoms to flare up but I find that sitting in the sun getting my daily dose of natural vitamin D does wonders for my overall mood. I don't like the joint pain or the nausea that the sun brings on if I am in it for more then 15 minutes but there is nothing quite like the natural mood boost that the sunlight gives me so I try and get 15 minutes in the morning and 15 minutes in the afternoon, weather permitting of course. Once we hit late Fall /early Winter the sun is hard to find around these parts.

I understand what you're saying, x123. Cloudy days are my favorite...especially when it rains. I'm currently living in California and I can't handle all of the sunshine. It makes me want to stay indoors even more than usual.

On the bright side, if you would excuse the expression, it is much healthier to limit exposure to the sun anyway.

I don't like sunshine but that may be due to sensory issues and how hit it can get during the summer. It can bring down my mood since it makes it hard for me to walk outside and get my exercise.

I do like sunshine on a cooler day though.
Thanks for this!
