How extensive is the connection between government and business. I got a letter today from Tx DPS. They want to know why they don't have knowledge of me having insurance on my truck.
The reason I don't have ins on my truck is because it isn't mine anymore. I sold it 6 months ago. But it could just as easily be that I dropped coverage because the engine blew up and I couldn't afford to have it repaired. It could be that I just decided not to drive it anymore. My question is how does DPS know I don't have insurance. Do they require an ins company to notify them whenever coverage is dropped? This is something that will probably be easy to straighten out but I don't like the implications. Just ranting here I suppose.

Ah, the whole "We are constantly being watched and manipulated by the government" theory. I actually read halfway through that novel, "1986" and it's not a half bad book. I put it down somewhere and can't seam to find it anymore. Ah well. There's always ebooks.

You mean 1984 I think. I'm not into conspiracy theory much but that really wasn't what I was getting at. The government is watching you in a manner of speaking but unless the complex set of logarithms used indicates you may be doing something they're interested in they don't really see it.
This is not that serious. Just annoying and disconcerting.

George, I don't know about Texas, but here in Florida insurance companies report who has insurance to the DMV. They also report people who drop insurance. Yeah, seems rather Big Brother-ish to me too.
Thanks for this!

It used to be possible to print authentic looking insurance certificates that would fool a policeman. Nobody would know until a wreck happened and the at-fault motorist would have no insurance to pay for repairs.

I agree about the Big Brother problem. Sometimes I have wished the IRS would simply figure my income taxes for me, but then I think about the dreadful errors that might happen and the nightmare of dealing with IRS "customer service" LOL

You are definitely right, @George H. I just don't know how to escape Big Brother.

Didn't you have to cancel and turn in the plates? Wouldn't that automatically have cancelled the insurance. I guess I don't understand. Would that mean the present owner is driving around without a license and insurance? Would that also mean you continue to be liable?

It isn't just the government that knows significant information about our lives but big business and corporations to. My Bank is one such corporation that has admitted to tracking the Social Media history of it's clients. Why they would need that I do not know.

Mind your P's and Q's I guess and be careful what you say on social media and be careful what pages you like. And learn the key words that the NSA logarthms red light

No, you don't have to do that in Texas. As a matter of fact you can't although recently regulations were changed and one is that you can keep your plates if you wish. Vehicle sales regulations & laws vary by state. Texas likes to complicate things. I could be liable but most likely not.
It's bad enough that any entity collect so much info but now they share it.
Is what your bank does legal? I know that employers and potential employers do it but the legality is still questionable.

Haven't you heard? That's illegal

I think I have the situation in hand although it wasn't as simple as a phone call. Nothing is simple with TX DMV. If the new owner doesn't do anything crazy with the truck in the next 48 hours I'm probably in the clear
This is really my own fault. When you sell a used vehicle to an individual here you have the option of mailing notice to the DMV along with a $5 check or you can do it online. I did neither.

I'm dealing with Calif DMV with the car I own in my name I left there for my husband to drive. Refused to put it in his name. It quit running..he insisted that I had the title paper here..I didn't even come here with my birth certificate I wouldn't have brought a title to a car that I left in calif. arguments for years about the title. But it can't be scrapped without the title. Went to get a duplicate title & they said I didn't have the right paperwork...but come to fine out ex shredded the right paperwork. Car is still sitting in the driveway unable to run. I live 2100 miles away & DMV is impossible to deal with over the phone & ex is incompetent when it comes to dealing with issues like this. I understand your frustrations. It's on my list to get cleared up so I can get the scrap money..not going to give him a cent of it considering what a jerk he's been about the title from the beginning.

Lol...the change of address form assumes the change of the car location also but not the case in this situation...dumb forms on top of everything else

It's illegal in Florida: Judge ruled that it's illegal to disconnect from the city's water system

I still have friends in Cali. Their DMV is probably even worse than Texas
I hope their website and telephone help line works better than ours.

It's illegal here too although there are grandfather clauses for the water/sewer system for a very few.

Sometimes I'm ticked that 'big brother' isn't watching. I get shocked on ocassion for example that multiple departments of the very same agency do not share information. For example, my provincial Healt Care ministry. My drug plan, my disability assistance, my housing subsidy, my physical health care, my mental health care all are departments of Saskatchewan Health. Yet, NONE of them share information with the other. ie. I phone the drug plan to find out why they have made changes and they tell me to call my social worker. If I get transferred from one agency to the other the second needs all my personal information which I gave the first. I talk to my social worker about one matter but I need to talk to someone else about my disability allowance and a third about my housing subsidy. They send out one person to interview me and inspect my home for the disability and then another comes out to do the same for the housing subsidy then I have to fill out forms to the same information to my social worker. They all work out of the SAME freaking building

They must believe in destroying the forests & probably never read the forms you fill out in the first place...that is if they are capable of reading.

No George, their website & help line are as non-functional as the actual people working there & as non-functional as the husband I left. Funny because everyone tells me how backward & bad it is here in Ky but its nowhere close to being as bad as Calif & everyone is so helpful here when I have a problem....I will figure out the system in calif when I build up patience to deal with the DMV & the H i left 8 years ago...lol. Guess anything seems good compared to that so maybe that's why I don't have problems with the people here....it's all relative & I have no relatives here.
