I don't know. Maybe I'll resubscribe to Netflix. Not necessarily to improve my mood... but just to escape. And if I know myself, it'll still have some effect on my language learning.

I don't remember if you've told it, what do you like watching on Netflix? I mostly hesitate to resubscribe - aside from money reasons - as I quickly lose interest and can't find anything to watch. Like, I basically watched the latest season of Stranger Things and couldn't really bring myself to care about much else.
I haven't subscribed to Netflix yet, so I can't tell you anything there, eventually I will subscribe and find something to watch.

Like, they say that the fact that the number "three" is the same in Latin, Slavic and Celtic langages matters. But why? Because that's a part of speech that generally won't get borrowed from a different language. The same with pronouns... Words that tend to get borrowed are nouns and verbs, coming over together with the foreign objects and activities...
I self depreciate when it comes to anything that could be positive myself, including my intelligence

I did know that English Dutch and German were related because you told me, so it's in the info-European family. I.need to get even more.fascinated with language than I already am.

And I wouldn't be so quick to lump Venezuelan and Mexican Spanish together. Well, they're going to have serious differences in pronunciation - that's for sure. But they may also differ in pronouns. Although I haven't looked at Venezuela, I know for example that in the Argentinian dialect there's a pronoun that doesn't exist either in Spain or Mexico... And then you're going to encounter idioms, misuse of which, as I understand, leads to comical misunderstandings more often than not, because Spanish-speaking countries are strangely fond of applying formerly innocent words to obscene activities, regionally, while in other countries those words remain "clean".
I'm not bored with German at all, On just got curious with other languages, I still love the German language or else I wouldn't be stuyding it.

As for Spanish, this particular guy on Facebook is the only pne willing to help even if his dialect is different from the one I learned, but I'm putting Spanish aside right now to focus on German.

I decided to learn German because I fell in love with the language through music, and am determined to learn it. So no I'm not bored with it.

Right now I'm listening to music in German to familiarize myself with the language and see if I pick anything up (so far no).

So now I'm getting tonthe point where I can translate single words in my head like if someone says "seven" I start thinking "sieben", or with days of the week also that happens, like today is Dienstag (Tuesday). It's kind of weird In can now do that.

I thought you watched with a relative's account (thus a different language being a problem)?

It's good to hear that you're motivated.

I think I might be just projecting. I mean, I don't think I've lost interest to languages completely... considering my recent impulse for Persian. But they're one of many things in life that don't seem to make a lick of difference. Exposure to culture and entertainment is good, but ultimately all I'm doing is sitting in front of my computer and reading or watching stuff. And I could just as easily do that in English.

My job was promising to take advantage of my multiple languages... in the first year, but quickly gave up on that idea.

I'm trying to not use her account for that very reason, as I could mess up her account putting shows and movies in another language, unless it were to only affect that show or movie and not any other show or movie that is watched. Plus you can only watch on one device at a time so I'll never know who's on it. I'd rather have my own account so I can decide everything and watch foreginnshows and movies with English subtitles (if that show/movie comes with them). I have to ask my Mom, she controls my money (yet uses it for her own personal needs, I only get my phone amd Spotify account out of it), she has Amazon Prime and Hulu, so why can't I have Netflix? It's a messed up situation to be honest, the money In get is due to my blindness not mental illness.

Right now I'm trying to immerse myself in as much to listening tonthe language as possible to hear what words sound like, right now I'm only listening to music in German (some of it is too fast to make out words, ballads are easier to understand). I have a playlist of around 610 songs on Spotify. I don't know if you can get Spotify in your county, but it's free (but Insubscribe for $10 a month), and you can find a lot of songs in foreign languages on it, especially German. It's a good app, I like it.

The funny thing is that words I do know amd come up in conversation or reading something in English, I'll translate them in my head into German, It's most notable with numbers, and I'm recognizing more and more words. I guess that's progress which makes me happy.

Another thing is I have bought more colored pens, and another notebook, and plan on getting more notebooks for learning and translations.

Well, I'm already subscribed to Google Play Music, so... there's probably enough music if I tried to find it.

Well, I've (re)discovered some music in Spanish... And for some light German music apparently the word Schlager is useful. It's so weird... Because it, again, exists, in Russian, but in a different, but similar sense.

On that note, the other day I was absolutely stunned by a German word. It's Maßstab, and in Russian it sounds exactly the same and means the same thing... Except in German it has an etymology that makes sense (Maß - measure, Stab - staff), but in Russian it's... a combination of sounds for that particular thing (it means "the scale of a map").

...Oh, and before I got distracted: I suppose I'm not enough of a music fan, but it kind of doesn't count towards something that makes a considerable difference. Sure, I basically need music to function, but it can be even entirely instrumental, not to mention any language...

It may sound bizarre, but at this point I'd settle for a foreign-language friend. But it's one of many things I haven't managed to figure out in almost 30 years.

I've tried listening to some "Schlager" collections on Google Music, and if that's representative, then it's not so far from the Russian definition... and a couple generations too late for me. I know music doesn't work like that, but I can really see my mother or grandmother rocking out to those songs. Not me, though.

Well... And I found my pick of Spanish music exactly the same way - by searching for "Spanish rock"... Well, maybe not exactly the same. I guess I'll try that.

I'm happy to report that I managed to summon some... energy to study some more Welsh, and figured out a pretty complex sentence without requiring anything more than a short reference article and Wikipedia... Maybe you'll also find it interesting that the sentence consists of: negation before the main verb, then the subject, then the verb-noun "to have" + a possessive pronoun and another verb, all that used to convey the passive voice... Well, I suppose that's more confusing than interesting. Maybe a garbled illustration will help? Literally translated, the sentence goes "not is the term 'principality' to have its employ", meaning "the term 'principality' is not employed". Fun, right?

Oh, yeah, I also referred to Google Translate. :P

I'm sure Google Play has a lot of music on it, I just like Spotify better as there seems to be more artists on there. My German playlist now has 863 songs, I don't think I'll ever listen to them all, but hey it's a good repritour of music to have. Also I'm finding that I'm liking music in the German language better than English (maybe because there's more goth/metal in German), even though I cant understand the lyrics yet.

I feel it's always good to look up music in other languages, I did that with Finnish, there's one song I really love by a band called Uniklubi, it's called Houmena. There is a video on YouTube with the English translation, so I can understand the song. But right now my focus is on German music.

That's great, I still have to refer to google translate for everything, plus the translations sites you linked me to, and dictionaries. I am able to translate some song titles right now though, they may not be exactly right, and I'm literally translating them, but hey it's something.

Also I posted a song on Facebook in German saying how I love the song but don't understand the lyrics, but used Google translate to get a rough understanding of them. And one of my German friends was like "you could have just asked", then Intold her that I'm currently learning German which she thought was impressive and said it's a hard language, just like my other friend said. I sure did pick a hard language, but I fell in love with it through music amd want to learn it, so that's what I'm doing.

For whatever reason it makes me wonder, "hard language" - compared to what? And I mean... how can you tell if you're a native speaker? I mean, to me personally Russian comes without any effort. And Polish seems quite intuitive. Whereas English pronunciation still causes me near constant head scratching, and I officially consider this language mastered.

Just... well, it's when one person says "hard language" - it's an opinion. When it's 10 random people, it sounds more like a meme to me, and I'm instinctively suspicious of memes.

Is there an easy language? And if German is hard, what is Chinese or Japanese?

...Anyway, apparently you've advanced from simple interest to being in love with German, which is certainly progress.

I've just been told it's a hard language by 3 or 4 people already, so maybe it is hard. But the more I work at it the easier it'll get for me, Hell Spanish was hard fkr me and I took two years of it amd was beginning to read and write in it before I forgot it all. And yeah I just fell in love with German quite a while ago, and just decided back in December to officially learn it, so it's some progress to see that I love a language and want to work to learn it. Now it's just doing the best I can to immerse myself in it, so far I'm doing that with music, and I can already translate some song titles without using Google translate. I just changed my signature and didn't need Google translate to know what it meant.

Fun fact, before I forgot my Spanish I was reading something online amd I thought it was in Spanish because I was understanding parts of it, it turned out it was in Portugese, and I didn't realize it at the time.

Also I heard that English can be a hard language to learn, how true that is I don't really know, amd I heard Japanese is the hardest to learn, again I don't know how true that is.

But once I get a good base in German, I do plan on trying Spanish again, In already have a facebook friend offering to help me, but it wouldn't be Mexican Spanish which is most commonly spoken here in the U.S., it'd be Venezuelan Spanish as that's where he's from. But for now I need to focus on German.

The only problem I'm having with the music thing ks some songs are so fast and the vocals are not clear so I can't always hear the words, but it's better than nothing. Also I have over 800 songs that need to be translated, that may pose as a problem. Also German goth/metal (even the bands that sing in English) is better than American goth and metal, in my opinion.

Yeah, Portuguese can be deceptively similar to Spanish... I mean, maybe not "deceptively". I guess maybe because it can mislead an uninitiated reader (and maybe even listener) into thinking that it's the more popular Spanish... On the other hand... are counting? What did I say last I'd learn if I got bored with Welsh? Anyway, add Portuguese to that pile, especially because it should be really easy because of its similarity to Spanish. And I've found it a very nice-sounding language in the past.

...On the other hand, I've been thinking, maybe it would... do something... to devote a day to each language I'm studying. So with the current number they neatly fit into a week, with a rest day. But... it won't be so neat if I keep ramping it up.

I'm surprised, honestly, that you say that you can't understand "some" songs. I mean, I still struggle with spoken German, and I've been studying it intensely for 5 years... Hell, I can't understand some English songs, even if I've seen the lyrics... I don't know if you've come across any German Pearl Jams, but I think that's the double-edged nature of learning with songs - sometimes the singer won't even try to enunciate.

I had a kind of paradoxical thought - I might already know more Welsh than most inhabitants of Wales. I discovered yesterday - via the Welsh Wikipedia, no less - that only 19% of Welsh people speak the Welsh language... Well, I'm far from being able to speak it, but considering how often native speakers of a language struggle with their own grammar, I'm feeling pretty good about my chances.

Yeah, it was just a bit interesting that I was thinking I was reading in Spanish and later realizing it was Portuguese, they have their similarities I guess.

My understanding is bits and pieces, mostly song titles that I'm reading, but no I can't understand a whole somg yet. I'm just using music to get me hearing the language, plus In can look up the lyrics online for translations.

That's interesting, makes me wonder if it isn't a dying language then if so few people speak the language?

There's a video my German friend shared with me yesterday, it's in his hometown, there is English and German spoken (no subtitles), I understood a little bit of the German though which is progress.

Here's the video link if you want to watch it.
