Things that aren't done anymore

Old fashioned hardware shops with an assistant behind the counter you could talk to and get advice/service. Now these things are all big warehouses with a line of checkouts.

Our local hardware store closed a few years back, still miss it when I need some odd unusual item only they seemed to have.

Queues outside the cinema when there was a really popular new release out, we used to queue up the street for what felt like forever and you never knew if you'd get in, sometimes you'd get near the doorway and they'd tell you "full up". Still remember the disappointment as a child.

These days a new film comes out and it's so easy to book online, no Queues, no wasted time, no disappointment. Some things do change for the better.

I jumped back to this thread to include "playing house" after something funny happened, and I see it's been done!

Well I just tried to show some kids yesterday how we used to play house as kids - I grabbed a few items and made a house, and showed where you could make a couple others, pick a doll/toy etc and then go visiting each other. I was with 3 girls, ages 8, 9 and 10. They looked at me like I was crazy, and these are not little trying-to-be-teen types. They just simply didn't get it!!! lol!!!

I also remember the gas lines. I was quite little. I remember waiting in the car with my parents, who were pretty grumpy - and it was hot in CA - for like, forever, and finally when we were nearing the front the owner(?)/attendant said, "that's it. we're closed."
The guy in front of us had a huge 1970s fit! White-guy curly-fro going everywhere while he cursed out the attendant into last week! As for us, we just drove to Jack in the box and ordered 1/2 dozen burgers with no bread or tomato or anything, for our beloved golden/lab mix and ONWARD... because, wtf, what you gonna do?!

Oh, and another one. Who remembers hiding under seats and whatnot so you could sneak into the drive-in theater with your parents, smoke up those mosquito coils and sit triumphantly on top of the car while those audio pods roared horrible sound quality to the inhabitants of your car?! Oh the good ole days.

For long haul road trips, I remember mom and dad ignoring the purpose of license belts and making a bed in the back of the car.

I just got back from a road trip and noticed that people aren't as courteous as they used to be anymore. Not a single person pulled over to their left to allow me a smooth and safe merge. This was once what you did without thinking. Same goes for driving in the passing lane. And I noticed not a lot of people pay attention to pedestrians - right of way or not.

It seems like there are not too many people working Mon-Fri 9-5 jobs anymore. At least not where I live.

Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs). They used to be in many stores, but now there are cellphone apps for that.

Putting on a suit and tie (scarf for the ladies) to go to work. There was once a time when this was standard office attire for employees but many workplace environments have eased up on the dress code a little and now khakis and polo shirts are more commonplace. Heck, my dad can even wear a nice pair of jeans to work at his office.

Remember when there was no internet?

That's when I thought every house should have a set of encyclopedias, a dictionary, thesaurus and daily newspaper--they are no longer needed.

Dollar Cinemas! Oh yeah!

Nurses used to wear white gabardine uniforms with caps rather than the scrubs they wear now. Very impractical. Whose bright idea was it to put white on a person who's going to be bled on, puked on, peed on, and who knows what else? The caps were always slipping out of place and had to be held on with at least forty bobby pins.

Taking the hat off indoors/at the table.

Last night my husband and I went out to dinner, and I noticed there were two men in the restaurant who were wearing hats at the table as they ate. (Not judging, merely observing.) One was a cowboy hat, the other a baseball cap. That used to be considered very rude. In fact, wearing a hat indoors was considered rude. There used to be practical reasons for that, but since those reasons don't apply nowadays, nobody cares anymore.

I just Googled an old AOL social networking site I used to use as a kid called, WeeMee and I learned that it was shut down...
So that's something that isn't done anymore.

AOL Online CDs being included in just about every software purchase and part of your daily dose of junkmail. Those things were EVERYWHERE!!!
