Hi guys. I did a search for threads with "art" in the title and nothing came up.

I'm not an art connoisseur, but I spend a lot of time on pinterest and artstation, so i was wondering if anyone else here is visually inclined? What sort of aesthetics appeal to you? Would it be alright if we shared links to pictures of art we find online that we enjoy?

I'm assuming the usual trigger warnings apply. Care on gore, nudity, violence, etc.

I'm not very educated in art, but recently I saw movie Vincent, about Vincent van Gogh and it was amazing. It was all animated using oil paintings based on van Gogh's paintings. A visual masterpiece.

I'm not sure if this is considered a type of art, but when it comes to living space, I prefer minimalism

Seeker33, I saw ads for that movie (I forget where) and it looked like a masterpiece. A whole new genre of film. The manwork that must have gone into animating the film must have been immense. I haven't seen it yet, not too good at films due to restlessness, but once I get to a calmer state it's on my to-watch list.

I live with my family so the house is a wreck lol (mostly my dad's fault, he's such a dictator and hates having things moved around). If I lived on my own I'm guessing I would aim for a hybrid of cozy bookish and minimalist.
Thanks for this!

I have a deviantart account (observor, not creator), but I don't go on it regularly. it seems like a very accessible website where artists of all skill level can post their work, which is great for motivating people.

ArtStation seems mostly for digital artists looking to land a job lol. But if you're into that genre, it has a lot of good quality stuff. Less fine art on there.

I need to find a nice piece to get us started off...

Okay, so I popped back in on deviant tart just to check up on the website and see what's new, and I re-realized this: The filter search function, the categories on the left, are abused by users! There's stuff that is NOT photography in the photography category, and there's porn everywhere.

Ugh. So annoying. Makes it hard to find what I'm looking for.

Oh my god my gears are spinning and I have grand plans for this thread that I know I will abandon as soon as my mood tanks. But anyway, I'm gonna (try to) post one classical painting a day, and we can all together become educated art snobs! (I know I'm using the word classical non-technically, not all "classical" art is from the Classical period, so I apologize.)

Art appreciation thread

I have seen this painting in person. When I was 14, we went to Spain and this magnificent artwork was in the Prado Museum in Madrid, positioned in a room at a 90 degree angle to a huge mirror. You could sit on a bench and see in the reflection, the figures standing at different distances. Diego Velasquez was a brilliant painter. He manipulated the light in this portrait in such a manner that you could see actual depth, from the Infanta in the front and those behind her and all of the way to the gentleman standing in the doorway.

I went in and sat on the bench. I could not believe what I was seeing. I was speechless and have never forgotten that moment.

Dear Art Appreciation Comrades.

Unfortunately images of Artist Mark Rothko's sublime works don't translate so well on computer. But if you ever get the opportunity to see his works in real life, please don't pass up the opportunity. His heroic panels glow like oversized hanging jewels. They will touch your soul and resonate with you for years to come.

Britannica.com tells us this about art:

Art, also called (to distinguish it from other art forms) visual art, a visual object or experience consciously created through an expression of skill or imagination. The term art encompasses diverse media such as painting, sculpture, printmaking, drawing, decorative arts, photography, and installation.

THAT said, here is my contribution to our "Art Appreciation Thread" for today:

I've been involved with creating art for most of my life. In high school, my friends were working flipping burgers and I was selling hand-lettered this and that. I'd make the amount of money on one piece that a friend would make in her entire paycheck from McDonald's. I've done different types of art & ooak handcrafts throughout my life.
I feel incredibly fortunate to have seen works by many major artists in California, New York, Jerusalem, and Paris.
So yes...the visual arts are an enormous part of my life.
Thanks for this!

I went to the Salvador Dali Museum in St Petersburg FL several years ago. His later works, life-size, were very impressive.

Mark Rothko was an abstract expressionist. His work is profound. You can read about him, and about his art work, here:

Dali's work is incredible. I have to use caution when I view it, however, because it so closely resembles the perception of chronic derealization I experience. When I look at Dali's work my brain feels off balance (a weak way to describe the sensation). I sure would love to know if others with derealization experience that sensation when looking at surrealism.

Here's my contribution for today:

Bal du moulin de la Galette (I think that's French--Bal means ball or dance, and moulin means windmill, and Galette is in the renowned Montmartre district of France) by Pierre-Auguste Renoir:

Art appreciation thread

Edit: Sorry the image isn't showing for some reason, so here is the link: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bal_du...LCH_space).jpg

Galette is a form of cake in French and that seems to be what the windmill takes its name after.

The info on Wikipedia

I love the romantic/impressionist painters, especially the French. Something about their subject matter is just so melancholic, but in a good way, and mildly pleasant, without bashing you over the head at all. I feel like they tell the stories of people's lives at that time, and revel in both the joys and the realities.

It's an abstract piece. They always look way better in real life. It's about color, form--the fundamentals of art distilled down to an abstract form. Some people prefer it, some don't.
