my first internet experience was on one of those dial-up lines, and at the time I didn't really know what the internet was or what to do.

the first site I ever visited was my internet company's site at the time- updated weekly with news and shopping features (it was easy to use for the first experience)

then for the first actual project, It was during english class and I had to look up roald dahl- and I used the official website of charlie and the chocolate factory

do you remember what your first internet experiences were?

I worked on computers at work, charting on patients. Our first home computer, we didn't get untill after Y2K bc everyone thought the computers wouldn't switch to the new mellinum. When we did get our 1st desk top it was also dial up.

Compuserve for me. I first dialed up to the internet in 1992. Before that however I participated in Bulletin Boards via the phone. This was where you placed the phone receiver itself onto a receiver. Talk about squawking! It was extremely slow and no sound or images.

Speaking of images and sound, my brother was part of the team that first cracked this for what became the Internet.

My memories of first dialing up are of having to schedule time so as not to interfer with the designated telephone time. I also recall web pages being soooooooo slow to download that I always had a book with me or some other thing with which to multi task. Recall IRLs? Nothing like waiting 2-5 minutes for a response.

Yep. I remember well. The year was 1996. I was at a library with my 2 children, ages 11 and 8. The library had one computer that a person could sign up to use. So I signed up, waited for my turn to come, sat down at the computer, looked at the screen, and saw a screen loaded with pornographic pictures. I was horrified! But it makes for an amusing story 22 years later.

I first had contact with the Internet in the mid '90s, can't remember the exact year. My cousin showed me her computer and loaded a few pages. It was extremely slow and at some point she couldn't surf anymore because the phone had died LOL. I first gained access to the Internet in 2001. I remember the MSN chatrooms, I met a few people there with which I stayed in touch for a couple of years then we all went our separate ways.

Mine was at the local library in the mid 90's.

Could only use computers an hour at the time.

Yahoo chat and game rooms was one activity I ventured at.

Mostly utilized it to look up news, history and stuff like that.

Glad I've got my own and no longer have to go to library now.

Thanks for this!

I think the first time my family got internet I was 5 and it was the mid to late 90’s. I remember I had just finished puking on the floor and I had gone to take a nap and when I got up we had internet. I remember playing some Donald Duck game. That’s all I remember and I’m not sure I’m remembering correctly at all. But I know I learned how to use it pretty quickly.

That was my first experience.

Prodigy -- then AOL.

I remember you got billed by the time you spent. Helped me not to be addicted. Now I am completely addicted.

It was 1979 the basement of my dorm in a locked room, we had access to the main server. A bunch of us would get together and play Star Trek. No monitor just a army green metal pillor with attached typewriter and another pillor with the paper feed. We had to wait 10 minutes or more for the computer to respond, lots of drinking happened while waiting. Me, I crashed the enterprise more than once. The computer was very picky about language.

My first experience with a home PC was in the late 80's a friend got one for classes she was taking. I looked up southern states and decided on NM. We also played lots of games.

We got a PC in 98 but without internet so I could only play a few simple games on PC, draw, and just click everywhere randomly to see what happens I was 11 at the time.
I think we got internet in 99 because I was afraid of Y2K Of course we had a dial up and you couldn't use it and call on the phone at the same time. The internet was expensive and I only had a limited time so each time a website wasn't loading I went offline )) So I found a website with lots of text and while I was reading I turned the connection off

I used to go to some children's website and later to chat room of System of a Down (metal group). Ohhh sweet memories!!!

In the early '90s, after graduating from high school, I took a road trip to Pennsylvania for Pennsic (SCA - medieval recreation). The person that I camped next to was a couple years older than me and awesome, she gave me tons of info on things that I was curious about within the SCA, and when we parted, gave me her email address.

"What's that?!" I asked.

I was heading off to an engineering school, so she assured me that it would all make sense when I got to college (lol - can you imagine? "Just take this random text string, keep it safe for the next few months, and when you get to college... find THE EMAIL! You'll know what to do!")

Obviously, it did quickly become obvious and I mastered email, as well as newsgroups and the internet. OMG... before Amazon, Google, Paypal, or Netflix. Crazy to think about that now.

Does anyone else remember newsgroups (i.e. usenet)? The original forums!!!

Early 2000's. I mainly googled stuff and had an AOL email account. Then MySpace came along, and I also started joining forums.

Mid-1990s. I think we had AOL. Later, in college (1996-2000), I had Prodigy. I don't even remember my first time online. Early on, I was in 12th grade, maybe 11th. I remember one time I opened up IE expecting the Yahoo search page and the Google search page popped up. I thought it was a virus.

I remember my parents got a 2nd phone line pretty quickly because internet usage (I have 2 siblings) was making the phone constantly busy, and my dad actually had his own business at home, using the home phone line. Now we're all moved out, everyone has cell phones, but for some unknown reason, my mom keeps the 2 phone lines. I think she prefers the 1st number for the business, the 2nd for other calls.

Remember how the internet companies would keep mailing you those CDs for a 1 month trial? I think AOL did it a lot. They wasted a lot of money with me. I wasn't about to change back and forth as I barely understood any internet technology.

And when eBay and Amazon started up, I thought, "Who would be dumb enough to order stuff off the internet?" Now, I do all my Christmas shopping online, mostly through Amazon.

I think I got e-mail for my first job right out of university in 91. Got my first internet connection, and lap top that weighed like 25 lbs and had a 286 processor when I got a sales job in 92. The company had a dial up bulletin board site where reps could post product questions or info, sales tipe, and just generally chat. Seemed really high tech at the time.

Dial up on a 28k modem then upgraded to the standard 36k and then I thought I was the best knees with the lightning fast Ultra 56K external modem. My first page I visited was MSN.com then I got into piracy and downloaded windows XP and it took about 4 days to download only the necessary files to complete an installation. I remember feeling proud of my self for having a copy of winxp.

But I wish people would still use email. It's so expressive in a calm peaceful place that fuels the imagination with writing critique..

Unfortunately, my experience with the internet has socially influenced my isolation. I really believe the internet needs a stronger censorship. And before you bite my head off, uncensored, unmetered internet should be a paid prescription for adults. Mark my words as gospel Haha

My first remembering of using internet for more than just email was in 2003 ehen I was doing a materials project for one of my interior decorating classes. Used it for research.

This opened my eyes to the research capability that was available so I started researching about my mom's cancer a few months later & a few other things & stumbled across this forum in 2004.

I had worked on computers since 1973 when I started my computer science & accounting majors. We got our first original IBM PC in 1979/1980 & I got the first color PC through the company I worked for after graduating.

We always had our company networks but I guess working on computers all day at work I never had a desire do sit at a computer on internet when I was home. We just used email & our daughter had an aol account but for me it was in 2003 when I realized the research value of it besides the communucation ability.

I was young, foolish & in love that summer when I first flirted with the internet. She had me at, "You've got mail." Yes...within a week I lost my cyber-virginity & felt a warm, sensuous glow down deep in my processor. I'd post one of my romantic Gateway love poems, but they're quite erotic & not fit to post on a family-oriented website like PC. (I'm kidding, BTW! )
