To make a very long story short, after my father died, a friend, my mother and I rescued Yorkie puppies from a horrible “breeder.” They were over priced, and sickly pups, but we just couldn’t leave them. My husband and I have been very fortunate with the puppy we took (she has a different dame and all of her littermates were killed by the sire), once we got her healthy she’s remained so, thank God.

My mom on the other hand hasn’t been as lucky with her puppy. The vet discovered very early that there was something severely wrong with one of her hips that would require extensive surgery. They decided to wait a while to make sure the dog was healthy and strong enough to withstand the surgery.

Now that the puppy has been healthy for a few months, they discovered that both hips did not form properly and require the surgery. My mother is beside herself, the surgery will be several thousands of dollars, but that puppy is what brings life into her house now, the thing that gets her out of bed, makes her interact with another living being. So putting the dog down is out of the question.

When I called my friend to let her know what is going on, I found out a few distressing things. 1) her puppy has the same problem, but she didn’t want to say anything to make my mom worry 2) the “breeder” has bred these same animals again, knowing of the defects the previous puppies have had, and 3) there’s not a damn thing we can do legally here in Wisconsin because there are no rules governing animal breeders! Three years in a row our Governor has refused to sign legislation protecting the animals or the people that purchase them.

So the poor little thing is having her first surgery today, and once she heals she’ll have the next one. I so hope and pray she makes it through them both, I don’t think my mother would be able to handle another loss in her life right now.

Oh, I thought you were talking about people...

So many animals created for no reason beyond greed. Sick.

That's really sad. I'm glad that the puppies you rescued have found good and loving homes.

We have really outdated laws here to when it comes to protecting animals so you really have to do your homework on breeders.

I wish irresponsible breeders could be put out of business permanently.

We knew that woman in question was not a reputable breeder, and it killed me to financially reward her for her deeds, but we were not aware that she KNOWS that the puppy have birth defects. As it turns out she is breeding mother and pup and litter mates.

None of us were looking for pets. I did try to talk my mother and son (who paid for our puppy) out of taking the pups. There is a reputable breeder in my area that they could have gotten Yorkies from with papers and a 1 year health guarantee.

I know its cold hearted, but we already own one dog from a puppy mill that I couldn’t leave there and she had severe allergies and has GI and UT problems and requires monthly medical attention.

For some reason I have always loved animals more than people - maybe because they aren't twisted and sick like humans.
So sorry!

I hate irresponsible breeders I was watching something on Fox news I believe just a few weeks ago about breeders in Wisconsin and that there weren't any laws or regulation statutes governing dog breeders there .

But AAAAA , sorry for what your Moms pup has to go through ,, But that she LOves the pup so much is the gift to the both of them .

None at all. When another state shuts them down, they open back up here. Every couple of months the local news will run these horror stories about the conditions in the puppy mills here. A local group used to pay $50 each for the deformed and severely ill puppies to try to get them healthy and place them in good homes. When one of the largest puppy mills in the area learned that the group was co-operating with the media, they stopped selling to them. I can only imagine what happens to the puppy's now.

How horrible, I don't understand how people could harm another living creature for their own personal gain. I don't know much about puppy mill or breeder laws here in Arkansas but I know they take it somewhat serious.
Is there not any groups or any local humane socities that are willing to do something or raise attention to it to the goverment?
There is a humane society where we have always adopted our dogs and they work to rescue puppies and other dogs from irresponsible breeders and puppy mills..

Every year new legislation is introduced and the media run these stories to try to guilt him (govenor) into pass it. It has been unsuccessful so far. :-(

I think because of dog fighting in the bigger cities (New York City, Albany, etc.) that New York takes it's animals and their breeding seriously. Too bad nothing can be done though, the dogs don't deserve that kind of treatment.
