Hi

I severed the tendon on the little finger of my left hand requiring surgery. I was given sedation (versed) in addition to an auxillary (armpit) nerve block under my left arm (ie; a "brachial plexus block"). They also used a nerve probe to pinpoint the places they wanted to inject which made my fingers jump around like electricity was shooting through them. My arm was put in a sling and I was in a lot of pain so I slept with my back up against the bed for 4 days and on the last day, I was so uncomfortable because I had been rolling all over my cast in the night that I started sleeping in the rocking chair. I developed a moderately stiff neck on the same side as the arm they had injected and this brought on anxiety attacks and at about this same time I also developed a "lump" in my throat and my throat felt "constricted" to the point where it hurt a little bit and swallowing was a chore. The throat probs and stiff neck seem to have dissapeared in the last few days but I suffer from severe anxiety/panic attacks and am always obscessing that I might have a disease. I pointed out my problems to the surgeon and he said "oh, that's impossable!" but I have read that the brachial plexus set of nerves and muscles is connected to the neck so now I'm wondering. Has anyone else here ever experienced neck, thoat or arm problems after having a nerve block like I have described?. Please help if you can as I am getting scared and desparate )-:

Thank you so much!!

GG, this is probably outside the expertise of almost everyone on the forum. have you ever tried WebMD? you would probably find the answer there. i think you need to talk to an anesthesiologist (not sure if that is spelled correctly) because i'm sure that they would know the lowdown on the nerve connections. the only blocks that i've had was during childbirth and then a spinal when i smashed my ankle. i din't have any residual problems. sorry, i can't help you...pat
