I am having pain in my mouth.

Had dental work ever since last spring and finally over now. all done!

I hope...

but now I have pain in my upper left teeth and it's a nine when I don't take tylenol every four hours. so that I am crying!

I went in this friday and the dentist, he says it's from *shots* he gave me for that last dental work (crown and fillings), which the pain started.

*I don't think it's from the needles* I think it's somthing else. But I am not a dentist.

I have never had problems before from novocaine shots! I have had dental work many times before, even a tooth pulled last april. even more shots.

they looked at my gums and said they were "red".

"no infection" "call back Monday".

I am going to call my insurance Monday instead and ask if I can go to a different person for another opinion. I bet they will say it's not stupid needle shots.

I have never heard of pain lasting more than a week from *shots*.

this sounds like bs.

Any feedback?

This is not a joke.

Billi

I have sometimes had pain in my gum following a shot at the dentist. Not as a result of an infection, but because the needle can sometimes hit a blood vessel and cause bruising. After a few days the pain went away. And the pain definitely felt like a bruise. Is that similar to what you're experiencing?

I had pain from a crown and another filling last almost two weeks once, why, don't know for sure and had never had that reaction before. It was explained how sensitive nerves are sometimes and depending on how the nerve was touched and/or the reaction with the anesthetic used can aggrevate them. Even if the nerve was touching in the filing of the tooth can cause lasting discomfort and combined, the area needs time to heal. Also if there was infection present initially, there can be more pain and the procedure can initially aggrevate it but can clear up once rooted out but sometimes can get worse.

For me, it did go away though and have not had the reaction since. I suspect it was the injection that time and how the nerve was hit.

If concerned about gum infection, rinse with listerine and it will clear up many topical infections of the gums in the meantime.

If it persists, I would call back to get in or get another opinion and especially if you develop swelling in that area or fever, which is an indication of infection and definitely need to see them.

Ugh! Yes, I'd keep at that dentist. Did he pull a tooth, or clean out a deep cavity? It could be a "dry socket" if so...and that won't go away. It does take the dentist's action to remove the crown or filling and pack that dry socket with wet, medicine treated packing to get rid of the pain. If he won't, call and go to the ER. Don't put up with that pain longer than a day or two imo. If the gums are red, there's a problem...a shot won't make an inflamed gum for days on end imo. Is there a nurse you can call and talk with connected to your health insurance???

If you're not allergic, dissolving an aspirin on the gum will send the pain reliever straight through the skin/gum. Wet tea bags also work, in a pinch (the tannin acts as a pain reliever through the skin.)

I have to disagree with rinsing with Listerine or other such mouth wash (sorry) because those kill all germs...even the good ones and can lead to an infection because of that my DMD says not to use them. (note:"Many alcohol-free mouthwashes use cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) as an active antibacterial ingredient; it is effective because it is a cationic surface active agent that is able to absorb the negatively charged phosphates of the bacteria’s cell membrane (Radford et al., 1997)." It's the alcohol that is most detrimental. Plus I wonder if such mouthwashes haven't added to the lack of effectiveness against certain germs, such as streptococcii "They found that Listerine® was more effective against mutans species of Streptococci than other species such as S. mitis. " because of tolerance build up.) http://homepages.stmartin.edu/fac_st...isa%20Hall.doc

Working in the dental field, when a tooth abcesses or there is gingivitis, listerine IS what is recommended. Some dentists still recommend it as a preventative after procedures and as a preventative in daily use.

I've never had crowns or fillings, but sometimes in dental work it can expose nerves in the teeth so they become sensitive. I had a stain on a tooth that was scraped off, now the tooth is perpetually sensitive to different cold foods. I'd look into seeing a new dentist, or at least continue to bug the current one.

And what is their plan when you call back Monday with the same problem? If they have a plan why didn't they start with it the day you called? I guess I would want to seek a second opinion if the dentist can't respond when I call the first time. I don't see the point of waiting, unless he is just hoping the pain will magically disappear if you wait a few more days, which seems very unlikely since you've had this pain since spring. It never hurts to get a second opinion.

Good luck, Billi.

Hi, Billi here.

An update:

I got another opinion and I needed patchwork on some "abrasions". Don't know if they were from the old dentist; the assistant was very very rough on me as he packed those fillings. He all but jerked my tooth around and that's the one that hurts.

Then my new dentist sent me to an endodontist, who recommended root canal or extraction of that tooth.

I don't want to do either.

I still don't know if it's the gum. When I floss, the gum is sensitive. But it is so closed to that tooth that I don't know where it's coming from.

I can't go right now anyways cause I have bad cold---lasting a month now.

But I will follow up on it.

So depressing.

ty for all your feedback.

Billi

I would get the root canal; probably not feeding you a line; go to another dentist and get another opinion? A friend of mine just did that, he didn't believe he needed that either.

I go to the dentist for my checkup every 6 months and have a good rapport with him/them. I have had maybe 3-4 root canals (I don't get my teeth extracted as that just causes more problems further down the road).

haven't been following along but would like to add when it comes to extensive work get multiple opinions...i have been put threw thre ringer ...i have even been told the day of my root canal "oh it's not this tooth, it's the one on the left".. how the F do you get them mixed up...excuse me....i am in now constant pain from bridge work that was done years ago extractions were done and surgery and i was on soo many narcotics for 2 weeks even waking up at night in pain. Now i think it's a nerve that he hit that is causing my face pain.
My enamel is soft and at times it feels like i have nothing but cavities in my mouth i have to go every 6 months because my teeth are just really bad...but most of the time it's my root nerve that is exposed from my gumline that makes me think i have a cavity when i dont (even though every tooth in my mouth has been worked on)
6 months ago a molar was hurting and the guy said i needed a root canal (my 6th one) and i scheduled it and everything...didn't go ...my tooth doesn't hurt anymore....who knows...always get opinions many of them

Bili - how are you feeling now?

I had my first cavity a little over a month ago and they had to use 3 shots of novicane bc the first two did nothing. My gums didn't hurt but the muscle at the back of my mouth did - every time I tried to chew.

I would definitely get a second, or even a third, opinion. I don't trust dentists - maybe it's my own paranoia but I went to a dentist that told me I needed to have my whole tooth taken out. Went to another dentist and he told me there was no way that should happen. Said I still at least 75% solid tooth left and had a tiny cavity. So it's my own bad experience but I just don't trust em. Hope you have better luck!

update:

I had my back molar (top left) extracted on March 23, 2011. I hope it's not anothe rtooth still hurting.

I went to have it looked at yesterday and the dentist did not look into my mouth; she only took an x-ray. I was surprised that she did not check me for dry socket! I went back in and told her to check it. She refused. She said my insurance did not cover that. WHAT?! Wait a minute, I said. "A dentist always x-rays AND examines a tooth! Why not?"
She grew flustered and said, "If you are not satisfied with me, go see someone else!"
I was flustered and mad and hurt. I had liked her and did not understand why sh was acting like this.

My plan: I am seeing the emergency dentist who pulled that tooth now. He did look in my mouth and I am scheduled to see him next week. If there is any more going on besides that socket, I will hopefully have more coverage starting in May so that I can have a thourough look-see to find out if I need any more work done.

I hope not.

This is NIGHTMARE.

I am SO sorry you are going through this. I am glad there is someone else you can see.

Here is some info on dry socket in case you suspect this may be the issue:

I hope you get some help, relief, and less stress as well with this new doc. Hang in there. Sending good wishes your way.

ty very much, Fresia.

I know about dry socket pretty much.

The pain is worse now---tylenol does not help anymore.

took a stronger prescription med, vicadin.

helping.

anyway, saw the emergency dentist yesterday and he said it looks okay.

it still hurts though.

I am still very upset with that woman dentist, even though I am not taking it personally as I might have only 2 months ago.

very upset.

we need more laws to protect consumers and patients.

I am so scared.

I feel like docs can get away with much more than they used to.

esp if a patient has emotional/mental issues.

It stinks.

thank you Perna.

I liked her.

But suddenly she didn't like me.

Probably because I had someone else pull my tooth.

I told her it was an emergency! She had not been available then!

Gd!

These ATTITUDES of these doctors!

I can't believe it.

She won't see me.

I did follow up with that emergency dentist and had an insurance broker sign me up on an HMO with him.

So we shall see...
