I've had thyroid problems that started back when I was about 20 years old. I was first put on synthroid back then.
Since then my thyroid has been a very big problem. Probably a problem with my pregnancy as well. Anyway, the past few years especially for me my thyroid has really gone crazy ...I was told I was hyperthyroid because of the bloodwork. I was showing signs though for hypothyroid. They sent my for an uptake and when I went for this scan it went completely the other way (or so I was told at the time). I was simply told I have hashimotos and put on meds for it. Also, I have nodules (3) that need to be monitored with an ultrasound...if they get larger they need to be checked. After some time I became extremely fatigued to the point that I couldn't do anything for a years time and was in a lot of pain. My thyroid went crazy. I got a goiter and they couldn't regulate it. I had a lot of problems during this time. I went to a new doctor. He went through a ton of my tests and found out that during that time of the uptake scan ...that it was "void" because I had gone for an mri scan and had dye just prior to this test, which would conflict with this test and that is why they do not have an accurate diagnosis as to what the exact problem is. So basically for now I'm on synthroid and I go monthly to get my thyroid checked because it's so "out of whack". I think that my thyroid has a lot to do with my mental health. I read fried's question and thought to myself how many times thyroid problems come up for people who suffer with depression etc. Just wondering if anybody had thoughts on this. I usually don't talk about my physical health problems because I find that side of me exhausting so i choose to ignore it if it isn't bothering me. If I'm getting by ...then I am like great. I was supposed to go to my doctor back in april. So I'm long over due. Anyways...sorry this is long winded. Eva

I am due to have my thyroid out in a couple of weeks. I will be placed on synthyroid after they determine that I do not have thyroid cancer (if I do, I will have to wait until after RAI treatment). Although my thyroid blood work has always come back as normal, I too am hoping that the synthyroid will be that answer to my other wise "treatment resistant depression". Take care.

Hi dasiy ... I'll keep you in my thoughts during that surgery and that you will not have thyroid cancer. Please let me know how that goes. What led them to determine having to remove your thyroid etc?
I hope that the synthroid helps you too. Take good care Eva

I had to have my thyroid out due to cancer about 10 years ago. Be assured, if you have to have cancer, thyroid is the best one to have. It is slow spreading.
Mine had spread into the lymphnodes, which made it a bit more complicated of a surgery, but still have been doing fine, years later.. Songbird |

((hugs))) Um just a thought here.... it's best to not have surgery in July... because July 1st is when all the previous med students become doctors... so while there are more ppl around the hospital ( and a good time to schedule tests and such) it is considered a poor time to have any surgeries.... unless you're sure your own doctor and seasoned anethetist are the ONLY ones who're messin with ya! LOL

I know a lot of women here in Vegas that have thyroid issues - three women at my job have had to have their thyroids removed, & my oldest sister's thyroid is 'dead'. I don't know about my coworkers, but my sister seems depressed & has a hoarding issue with cats... I can't diagnose for sure one way or another. It seems to be pretty common here in NV.
Every thyroid test I've gotten (and I end up w/1 - 2 a year because of my fat) has come back normal. (Come to find out, though, that consumption of water contaminated w/rocket fuel ingredients in childhood & puberty can lead to thyroid problems in adulthood - and Lk. Mead is full of it :O I don't risk it - I drink bottled water from CA).

I too suffer from thyroid issues...........3 weeks ago I was put in the hospital for severe depression again and while in there they found out that my thyroid was out of whack again........so YES it has alot to do with depression....my phystrist said the first thing they check for is thyroid in all new patients coming in........I have been suffering with it for years now..........I am on Levoxyl and they just raised my meds up again........at least the suicide feelings are gone for now but feeling tired alot again lately but that could be heat related too ...I have to go sometime soon and have blood work done again to check my levels and I still fight with my ups and down days..........but was put on lamictal and taken off of topamax for that..........and they upped my anti depressants meds too so hopefully all this works out for me........I too have 3 nodules on my thyroid and they are watching them closely..........kinda scarey I found out years ago about the time I found out about my thryoid that my mom had thyroid cancer and had hers removed.......UGH really scarey thing...... so your not alone ............... take care ![]()

wow Fury ..that's a lot for your sister to go through at such a young age. I never heard of thyroid storm.
My thyroid had swung both to hypo then to hyper and back. I was on synthroid at the time. My doctor doesn't feel this is due to the meds either. I was going and getting this checked regularly because it was really driving me nuts. I'm sorry to hear about your sister and her kidney situation. I know how difficult that is. My b/f has the same situation and has been waiting for a kidney for a year and a half now. I hope that she get's better and doesn't have to deal with these serious issues. Good Luck to your sister and you're family. I wish her the best. Take care Eva

(((((((Hope)))))))
You're situation sounds so similar to mine. I hope you are feeling better now. I know that you don't feel 100% or probably not close, but hopefully much better then what you were. I am on lamictal, but also on topomax, because of severe migraines. This seems to be working although my therapist seems to question if my meds are working. I told her I think so or rather I know so...could be worse I told her and laughed cuz I seem to be a little reckless and matter of fact in my thoughts about life being a chore. Anyways, I to have family members who have had thyroid issues and my aunt had a parathyroid tumor and thyroid growths. As well as my grandmother...Oh a whole bunch of family members. Seems like so many people do ... huh. Well please take good care ...I hope you get to a good place that you can feel well. Take care Eva

My holistic doc has successfully treated myself and one of my kids for severe eczema. her philosophy is to detect the underlying malfunction in the body and to correct that. As opposed to covering up symptoms via creams, etc. She has also successfully treated thyroid problems, and I'd be glad to share her number with you if you'd like. Her fee is $240 for initial consult, then additional $ for testing she orders. Your insurance may cover it, or reimburse you. Her work is amazing, as she gets to the underlying causes of malfunction and provides the body what it needs to heal itself. If you choose to consult with her, I do hope it works out for you.

Me, Eva. I just don't know what to tell you though because you know more about it than me.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in 1993...I was constantly tired and I got my MD to check into it and see why. They ran a few tests and found out I had low thyroid function. I was put on Synthroid which helped a lot. The tiredness affected my life, more than I realized. My thoughts are with you.
