Last night, I got up after eating some cheesecake, and I noticed my foot felt funny. I'd only been sitting a few minutes, and I don't think it was in any funny position, but I realized my foot was swollen. I don't think it had been swollen before, but it's possible it was less swollen and I didn't notice, because it's better than it was, and I can't tell so much when I get up, but I can see it's still swollen.

I've had a swollen foot maybe a couple times before, like years ago when I was on my feet for like 15 hours when I worked in a casino, and another time for no discernible reason, but that was months ago.

There's no pain, except last night, while lying in bed, I had a pain shoot up in one spot, every now and then (not steady or too frequently), but it isn't hurting at all now.

I elevated it in bed last night, and it went down a bit, so it didn't feel "fat" when I walked on it after that, but I realized earlier that it was still a bit swollen.

My boyfriend says I shouldn't worry about it, but I've had anxiety about it, because I know I'm a candidate for a lot of problems. I'm worried about blood clots, among other things.

Any idea what might be happening, or if I should be concerned? Thanks.

Hmm - Swollen Foot

I know when my foot swells up it usually due to my arthritis acting up or from my heart problems starting to stir, therefore, my body will hold water around the ankles causing the foot and surrounding area to swell.

If it keeps on happening...... I would make an appt with your GP to make sure all is well, and to get some Lasix pills if needed to decrease the water retention in the body.

Thanks, Rhapsody. I hope it's not due to heart problems!! I'm really anxious about this.

Maven, could be any number of things, I would ask your doctor as it could be diabetes or gout, etc. My stepmother had arthritis like Rhapsody and her legs would swell too and then go down at night. But I'd check with your doctor and see what gives.

Here's a site with lots of potential causes and thoughts about treatment, etc.: http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/sym/foot_swelling.htm

Yes, there could be lots of reasons for foot swelling...some of which could be too much salt intake, poor circulation, heart problems etc. I would see the doc pretty quickly if it doesn't go away on it's own very very soon. Better to be safe than sorry!

Thanks, all. It hasn't been as bad today, but I need to get a new doctor, anyway, and want to ask about problems the current doc doesn't seem to examine properly.

Maven, I hope the swelling is getting better but if not maybe this is something you could look into too...
I have just been to see my GP as my feet have swollen again- last Friday they started and were fine by Monday but started swelling again yesterday. The doc last week was hopeless- never did any investigations, no blood pressure, no nothing, just said it (what IS it?!) was probably agravated by the plane trip I took that day and the heat and to keep them elevated. Luckily my GP was much more thorough and even thought of looking up the side affects to my meds- there she saw that a side affect of serequel is swollen feet!!!!! I would never have considered anything like that, so am very grateful to her for really taking this seriously.
This may not be much help to you, but GL anyway Swollen Foot

Thanks, Irish! Actually, it's not swollen right now, and has gone down after I've gone to bed. I think it's the crappy loveseat I sit on when I use the computer. The cushions are in poor shape, sunk, and the loveseat is old. We're getting new furniture when we move (well, shortly after we move). I think my boyfriend's right, in that it's the loveseat and just fluid retention.

I have never suffered from swelling before, not even when I had high blood pressure during my pregnancies, so this has been highly unusual. I think I also forgot to mention that I haven't had a script for the serequel since about august- in consultation with my hospital nurse I started back on 25mg prn only about a month ago and have needed several about 6 over the last weekend and not many apart from that. Which makes me wonder if it really could be the meds that are the cause?! So pleased that you're doing better; hope it stays that way for you.

p.s. also forgot to mention the theory the school nurse where mum works has- she reckons that it is kinda like PTSD, or delayed shock or something (I HAVE had a rough month, incl my 7yo special needs daughter running away and disappearing for 2hrs a couple of weeks ago, with full police search etc etc). So the delayed shock theory could work in my case too LOL LOL

That nurse could be right, and yes, some meds can cause it, I found out when doing some research a few days ago. Keep the foot elevated, and that might help at least some of the swelling to go down. It's been very rare that I've ever had swelling, too. I haven't had any pain (except when I worked at the casinos and had it after standing on my feet for hours and hours straight, but the pain was in my feet, not from the swelling itself), which is good.
