Well I just hooked up with one of my good friends who is the BESTEST with diet / exercise advice ...

He has just spent two months training in Thai kickboxing ... in Thailand the lucky bish ... and I hadn't seen him for a few months before that. Yea I'm slack atm.

So I have been a bit lazy with my eating and exercise lately and I am sure I have put on a kilogram or two. Not heaps but enough to make me go oops ...

Anyway the point of this message is this:

I read weight stuff here sometimes and the thing that has always been most stressed to me ... I've just been reminded of ... and works best for me personally is:

NO CARBS FOR 6 HOURS BEFORE YOU GO TO BED.

So that might be 4pm for some. For me it's 6pm as I don't go to bed till midnight usually.

It is seriously magic when combined with exercise ...

So ... what's YOUR top tips for being healthy?

Michael is helping me with a food plan again so if anything useful comes up I might post ...

FYI I used to throw up and stuff to try and control my weight and he was the person who got me out of it because on his eating and exercise suggestions I looked way better than I ever did spewing. I used to say I REALLY WANT X OR Y and he would run to the grocery store on his lunch break and look up the nutrition information for me and tell me if it was OK or not ... lol ...

But yea ... I think a thread with good tips about what works for individuals in terms of weight management ... might be useful??

This is my last pasta for dinner for AGES My GURU is back! DOPE! Top Tips??? hehe.

Protein bars or protein shakes for breakfast or mid morning is a winner for me too.

I'm not great at doing healthy things, but one thing I try to do is, even if I'm eating something unhealthy, if it has veggies, eat more of the veggies so I eat less of the less-healthy stuff. I had Chinese food the other night (and leftovers last night), General Tsao's Chicken. This dish includes big pieces of broccoli mixed in, and while the sauce may not be the healthiest, the broccoli isn't usually covered that much in it, so I try to eat plenty of the broccoli, and less of the chicken (which has plenty of the sauce, and it's fried). Filling up on veggies is a good way to help yourself eat less of "the bad stuff."

Yea find veggies you like ... i really like snow peas at the moment, and bok choy.

Broccoli with a squeeze of lemon is awesome ... i make a really light honey and lemon dressing by heating the two together and it's yummy (to me anyway lol)>

I think Maven what you say is right, if you're gonna have something unhealthy do the unhealthy as lightly as possible (you also don't feel deprived).

I have a stirfry with prawns, fish, bok choy, snow peas, red onion with chilli and garlic and oyster sauce going on at the moment ... ideally, you'd serve this with noodles or rice. Since I'm not allowed carbs at that time I just have a very very small amount of egg noodles (not fried ones).

I wanted to get around my oh I so want noodles with this, Michael says I can't but if i'm going to do it eat it as early as possible and use egg noodles as they are better than any other type and only have a very few strands.

This def stops the cravings ...

So same as you said really M. My GURU is back! DOPE! Top Tips???

I actually just get a good powder, then blend it up with frozen berries and low fat yoghurt. I use Miada here. but I think that's NZ My GURU is back! DOPE! Top Tips???

Go for a low carb one, or else if you're female you'll undo the good work.

If i'm lazy I"ll buy a packaged drink. EAS or Myoplex are brands I'll get. Making your own with powder is cheaper, though.

They are very very good for you, they'll fill you up and stop you craving later in the day. Some of the flavours are quite yummy and chocolatey etc.

If you don't mind the slightly milk powdery taste protein bars are very good for a mid morning or afternoon snack. Again watch that you're getting something low carb. It can be really deceptive.

Another thing is - and you all prolly know this.

Watch 'fat-free' or 'sugar-free'.

Often products that have these characteristics are worse for you than something that has a straight bit of sugar, cos of the carbs and additive crap that will make you put on weight anyway.

i don't proclaim to be a know it all but I do love my boy's tips ... I definitely have benefited and I am my proper weight if I follow his ideas .. without throwing up to be slim enough.

It's all about what you eat and WHEN you eat it. You don't have to be deprived to have a healthy diet. That chocolate is fine, if it's dark, high cocoa, and you don't eat a bar in one go.

It sounds like i'm trivialising it but i am not. just if you're female - no carbs after 5!!!!!!!!!!

Different things work for different people, Jan, but it's always worth trying stuff out My GURU is back! DOPE! Top Tips???

I also take some thermodurics sometimes to assist with fatburning when I exercise. have to watch out what is in them sometimes though esp if you are taking meds.

If anyone else has opinions ... share My GURU is back! DOPE! Top Tips??? Like I said I'm not going to be right about everything I say working for everyone ... but I wish I had known some of these things (including how to read food labels) a long time ago ...
