Come to think of it, I went through a spell where that would happen to me and wouldn't you know it, it was after having lunch out with a friend. We'd sit in the restaurant and shoot the breeze, waiting for it to hit me but it never would until we hit the next place we were going. I'd automatically head for the bathroom and sure enough, it would hit BIG TIME! Someone asked me if I had "something," don't remember what they said, but as far as I knew, no I didn't. It just went away by itself.

What causes it when you've had gastric bypass, again?? thinking of gastric bypass That's a yukky feeling!! thinking of gastric bypass

could be eating too much or just something your new tummy doesn't agree with. like too much sugar or too much greasey stuff. I found a site that tells alot of info I didn't have yet.

The dumping you get with the GBS is from fatty foods and sugary foods. Also you can get it by eating too fast or too much. I have the problem of eating to quickly.

Ideally you should be able to eat your meal in 30 minutes. I usually end up making it to 15 and its gone. I need to slow down.

Not everyone dumps either.

The band that they are using right now has only been approved by the FDA for a few years and isn't as good as the one they are using in Europe that they are trying to get the FDA to approve it to be used here in America. I have also heard it is very easy to eat around the band meaning eat things you aren't supposed to. You don't have anything hanging out of your body its a port in your side that the doctor inserts a needle and adjusts the tension in the band using saline.

I was reading on another site last night about so many not being able to eat healthy foods with the band either. people were saying it made them throw up all the time.

I had read that you could adjust the band yourself. That's not for me. Too much room for error and waaaaaaaaaay too much room to cheat!

Do you have any other scary stories to share with us, Jbug? I'd like to know just in case I run into those things. That way, they won't scare me so much.

I really don't think I'd have much of a problem because I already don't eat that much. If I had a sugar attack, I'd eat at home! LOL

Do you eat chocolate and how much of it can you have at one time?

I think I'm gonna go for it. How about you, Be?

Uh Hu! My youngest has IBS and when his stress is high, he dumps. Poor kid! But he won't see a dr about it. His wife's quack put him on Wellbutrin for it. He took it for a month and then quit it. The cramps he gets look fearsome! He goes pale in the face and it takes him a few minutes to recover from one of those dumps. thinking of gastric bypass

no way would they ever allow a patient to adjust the band!

yes I am seriously thinking about it if I can ever get my disability started. as I understand it medicare will pay at least a portion if you have overweight associated illnesses and I do. I can't afford it on just our health insurance.

So, what are you gonna go for, the lap band or the gastric bypass?

just out of interest, does anyone know HOW overweight you need to be before gastric bypass is considered?

I will go for the bypass. never the band.

irish the guidelines say 100. but there is other criteria that it can be done with less than that.

men 80 lbs overweight, women 100, BMI over 40; 1 in 200 chance of dying from the surgery, average cost $25,000

I've got high blood pressure, borderline diabetes, COPD, osteoarthritis throughout, kidney failure, my cholesterol is high although I take Crestor. Those are just a few. You tell me what my chances are of dying if I DON'T have the surgery.

There is ALWAYS a risk of not waking up when you go under anesthesia, even for oral surgery and I go in next Tuesday for that. Do I need the statistics for that, too? I don't think so.

((((tomi)))) i understand the risk-benefit analysis. i truly do understand this. i've been slated to get a recently fda approved treatment for my treatment-resistant chronic major depression (it's called vns therapy, or vagus nerve stimulation therapy). and it requires a surgical implantation of the generator and lead wires to the vagus nerve. the risks are quite minimal. and i had to weigh the pros and cons of this. since i'm a huge candidate for electroshock therapy, i'm leery of doing electrock because i already have brain damage. i feel safer with vns therapy. i've been waiting for awhile, since i have to get insurance approval for coverage.

No, I don't have an appt yet. I need to get through the thyroid thing first. Then I'll probably have to talk to my primary care physician. It was the endocrinologist that suggested it. I don't think I see him until the 16 of this month, but I have to check and make sure.

I'll let you know for sure, though.

{{{{{{{{{{{{WW}}}}}}}}}}}}} I completely understand how you feel! If I was you, I'd go with the VNS myself. I've seen and heard of too much bad stuff with the electric shock therapy. thinking of gastric bypass

Let us know what happens, okay? thinking of gastric bypass

(tks for the info). was just wondering really. good luck everyone with your decisions. It literally sounds like a life-or-death sort of option (do it, you can lose weight adn improve your health; do it and face the risks of the surgery) so I hope that whatever the choice it works well for you. Best wishes

It is a life changing thing. If you are gonna do it you need to have a very good support system in place. I'm glad that I do. Sometimes my family doesn't understand but that's their problem not mine. Like last year when I didn't eat any turkey at Thanksgiving. I had learned my lesson the night before when I had made a small meal for my parents who were going out of town on Thanksgiving.

I do eat chocolate but not in huge quantities. I get the take and bake cookies and bake one at a time or two. They make a good sugar free cookie that you can do that too also. There are some sf (sugar free) stuff I hate like pancake syrup its just nasty and things like that. I figure if I'm gonna splurge its gonna be on the real stuff kwim?

Looking back on my journey the last few years I'd do it again in a heartbeat staph and hernia again too.

jannie I am proud of you hon. I need to lose at the minimum of 100. would be ok with 90 but 100 would take me back to where I need to be. I am so hoping with my issues (health) that I can get this done in the next year or so.
