... was born Thursday morning. He looks beautiful and perfect. Within a short time, his parents realized he couldn't swallow right and was drooling way more than a baby should. He was tested and found to have esophageal atresia (ever heard of it?). His esophagus was not fully formed and was not connected to his stomach. Day 2 of his life he had major surgery to sew his esophagus together! The surgery appears to be successful. The poor little baby is doped up on morphine but still often in pain. My baby nephew... He'll be tested for all kinds of associated birth defects. So far this looks to have been isolated. I sure hope he's okay otherwise. Sometimes there's just no preparation for what life can throw at you. His mom had to have an emergency C-section during the delivery too.

Please think good thoughts about my baby nephew.

Sidony

Sidony, I'm thinking of you and your family.

My nephew was born at only one lb., fourteen oz. He is now a healthy 13 year-old boy. I am sharing with you to let you know how strong babies can be!! Update us.

My little nephew is doing better! They removed his chest drainage tube, and his parents got to hold him for the first time since the surgery. He went right to sleep. My baby nephew... He had a "swallow test" to check how the surgery had fared. He passed and his mom was going to try to breastfeed him for the first time today. His tests for associated birth defects are all coming back negative. So we are all praying this was his only issue. He'll be in the hospital for a while yet (and may have trouble eating at first) but is much happier without the chest tube hurting him. I hope he will get better and better. Already he is stronger. Yes, babies are amazing!!!

Thanks everyone,
Sidony

Update: My little nephew was released from the hospital today -- Christmas Eve, which is (coincidentally) also his dad's (my brother's) birthday... My baby nephew...

My little nephew has had many other tests for associated problems but does not seem to have any. He's still a little reluctant to eat but getting better all the time.

Merry Christmas! Thanks for all the support!!!
