www.peta.org

I haven't been around lately, so I'm not sure if this has been covered or not, but anyone concerned about the welfare of the animals abandoned in Katrina's wake is urged to click on the link above. As of now, click on "read more" on the lead story to sign your name to a petition to urge President and a Senate Committee to explore evacuation options for animals during natural disasters.

You can also read the latest news regarding the ordred shooting of dogs in St. Bernard Parrish and Lt. General Russell Honore (the supposed official in charge)and his refusal to allow the military to forcibly evacuate residents without their pets. This was dated today, WAY too late for many, but apparently now the military is armed with pet carriers to assist residents in taking their pets with them.

There is more info on Peta's site, here's the link to get started and most importantly, sign the petition. It is a disgrace. In my opnion what it means to be a healthy capable adult human being is that we look out for those who cannot help themselves: the elderly, the sick, children, and yes, animals. What better definition of a human being is there? Please sign the petition. Even email your senator and state representative about evacuation procedures that include animal rescues from day one.

I was a member of Peta for years and rarely did their petitions go anywhere. They are just considered too radical for most.

I do urge people to help the animals of katrina. If you can (I know a lot of us are not in good financial situations), donate to best friends animal society (http://www.bestfriends.org/) or the La SPCA (www.la-spca.org). I prefer Best Friends as they are no-kill.

I have been told that you can hear the barking of dogs all over the semi abandoned city. People have left their animals tied up outside and trapped in buildings.

Hi, I signed a petition to Pres. Bush and tried to send email a letter to the Mayor of New Orleans but the sight rejected the email. (?)
I will donate to this cause. I feel so bad for those animals, especially with that tainted water. How many wild and domesticated animals per day are dying? Makes you feel helpless.
Thanks to those caring animal organizations I have hope something will be done about it.

OH, it is so sad. I have three pets, and I couldn't leave them abandoned no matter what!

Kewl poo.
BTW "WE" in South FL just got the Red Cross to open up one (1) shelter that accepts pets with the people! It's inadequate, but more than they ever allowed before! Only took them 35 years of (my personal) arguing the case!

Sorry, PETA was invoked, that means I won't get involved. Anybody know of an organization that doesn't have a wack job in charge and is sincerely interested in helping animals instead of making it a political issue?

Yesterday (Sept. 9) in New Orleans ALONE, the Humane Society of the United States rescued 559 dogs, 42 cats and 47 other animals. Other rescue organizations are still at work in New Orleans and Mississippi too, now having been given permission legally (as if I would have needed permission?!) to use crow bars to get into homes where animals are known to be abandoned.

Here's the HSUS link for the info: https://secure.hsus.org/01/disaster_relief_fund_2005

Animals After Katrina Yay southern Florida and everyone else who is taking in the animals and trying to find homes for them! I'm amazed that the rescue groups are still finding these animals alive. I heard "the general" (Honore) being interviewed on CNN today and he said the military has 700 carriers they are using to help with animal evacuations (I think he meant for people who are being evacuated by the military to use) but at least they are doing that much. He seems quite likable from what I've seen so far. I hope he's a good guy as far as animals are concerned.
