I was kind of shocked to see this. I am looking for answers anywhere to strange events that are happening to me that seem spiritual in nature. So I go to a website with spiritual/psychic stuff on it and I go into the chatroom and there is a big disclaimer that people with mental illness are not allowed and if it is discovered you are mentally ill then you are kicked out.
I don't understand this very much, I guess someone that is mentally ill could have spiritual-like hallucinations, but to bar everyone that has mental disorders from participating... Sorry if this topic is not appropriate, but I'm steamed.

I don't blame you from being steamed. What do they mean by that? Who are they to judge?

i agree with you Birdie~! it's a crime, in thought if not in fact,, actually anyone who is open to the public is forbidden to restrict any one with a disability, so turn them in to the Federal Civil Rights Attourneys, or the Civil Liberties Union~! take action~! (and good luck) Gus

bird, would you mind telling me the name of this website? I would like to make sure to avoid it. I am very dismayed by this. I know that once I was part of a spiritual community website. But the moderator forbid me from helping someone who is DID and was in hospital. I am sure its not the same community. they would never turn away a mentally ill person. but I am very curious what this community is. And i am sorry for them that they have this fear. Fear is the opposite of spiritual balance. Urgggg !!! I am not happy to read this. I am sorry you had to experience it.

Greetings,
Perhaps there was somekind of misunderstanding. Though, if not, from my understanding, the owner/s of the particular website/s are the ones who can welcome and/or unwelcome whomever they please. Especially if it has to do with the well-functioning of whatever service their website is offering. After all, this is the internet and, well, there are numerous kinds of websites, which discriminate is one way, or another. Nonetheless, I hope you are able to get over this and find a site, which will welcome you, not to mention, suit your religious needs. Best of luck to you. Have a good one. ![]() |

I can see that is upsetting to you. I don't think it's a legitimate case for court though. That means someone who is an alcoholic under the influence could sue here because they're not allowed on site at that time. How is that illegal? Plus, most sites have an agreement you "sign" when joining that protects them from/for whatever it is they deem they need protection. It's as much a protection for themselves as for the members.
Members often don't know what to say, how to respond, don't understand anything about mental illness, for one thought. What if you had poured out your heart about an issue and was totally slammed by the --albeit ignorant-- replies? I'm sure that would make a person feel worse than reading that MI people aren't allowed. It is rather raw though, and ignorant because probably many of their members are mentally unwell (at some point) and just not identifying it or admitting it. Unless you are prone to pathological symptoms, you could chat and just not share your disorder. I mean, it's a problem when people have a need to tell everyone they meet that they have a mental unwellness, imo.

There could be a very simple reason for this ruling. I know when I am manic anything spiritual can send me completely nuts. Perhaps it is a ruling out of concern and not a discriminatory one at all?
Anyway it would be pretty difficult for them to prove you are mentally ill unless responses you gave were completely off the wall. |

We already don't allow "sane" people to post here... We have a sanity detector when you start writing in the box and if your post is obviously sane, the system rejects it and boots you off.
![]() ![]() ![]() Seriously though, I find it disturbing but I'm sure there's some sort of rationale behind it if the site operator or owner were contacted. Perhaps they could be convinced to change their mind as well... DocJohn

There is a site called Clinical Psychology News that goes into a branch of science called Neurotheology that led me to a lot of intel on how our spirituality and our physiology are integrally connected. Even a bunch of reading on "The God Connection". They will not turn you back. They are proponents of our gifts and inspire the notion that we are not "ill" but gifted. I'm sorry you hadto feel the same ole backlash.

I looked again and misunderstood the site, I didn't read it well. They state it's unrecommended for the mentally ill to participate, then the next sentence just says the mods can boot for any reason.
But I read that when I was almost in crisis last night, again. Actually the seemingly supernatural stuff that seems to be going on with me is sending me over the edge and that is what that site talked about. I am on a cancellation list to see a pdoc right now, wish me luck!

I was on a website about psychic phenomenon one time and saw a rule like that. I asked the administrator what that rule was about. He told me one time a mentally ill person had come to the site and joined in. talking about spirits, ghosts, telekinetic, astro progection and other psychic stuff caused the mentally ill persons symptoms to increase. the result was the person committed suicide and the spouse, parents and others joined in and sued him for wrongful death and they won because the website did not have any disclaimers saying such discussions can cause the mentally ill to go off the deep end and could cause the mentally ill to experience an increase in their mental disorder symptoms. by order of the court now all his websites must contain the same disclaimer that mental disorders can be affected by such discussions that were on his website so the mentally ill were not allowed on his websites. after that I was no longer angry at the rule. the guy was just doing what the courts told him he must do and covering his behind against any future mentally ill persons going over the edge because of his website content. to me that guy having that rule is no different than websites saying the suicidal people have to use the resources in their locale instead of using mental health websites that are not equipped for suicidal people. my suggestion talk to that websites administrator, the reason for that rule may be court mandated from some one who had gone over the edge. or he's just making sure no one has to deal with the helpless feelings you get on line when you encounter someone with problems you cant do anything about like mental disorders and suicide. ![]() |

Please understand this is NOT a religious post There are few less religious than I though I have been accused of it
DocJohn You cause me to laugh heartily! Rhiannon then has no fear There is trouble with some mentally ill people who have psychosis having issues with hearing what they claim to be gods voice or other religious experiences In many situations they become "religious" and then begin to attack those with sensitivities known as psychic abilities or cannot deliniate between a psychosis and an experience They have a legal obligation to NOT allow someone with psychosis if it is declared to them, to have membership because it can exacerbate their symptoms and they are the one who can be held legally responsible for the escalation of those symptoms

It the same in life. At times when I have confided in religious people I have met even so called friends they want me to come and pray with them and go to church when they see its not helping me (they expect me to be cured) they drop off and I dont hear from them again or they avoid me. I had one friend that told me its was all my fault because I did not give myself to God. Even those who profess to be open minded drop off when you don't become how they are. I dont want to be the way I am if I could snap out of it I would. Its hard to have friendships when the depression leaves a shadow over everything that you touch.

I think they don't want mentally ill people so if anyone looks they can go "See! We're not crazy! Everything we go through is real!" since pop culture is psychic = delusional person.
I'm not shocked or even really offended. I think it's funny... in a sad, ironic sort of way. Don't they realize there is not a single person in this world completely sane anyways? But it's the first time I've heard of a site like that. |

Oh man, this steams me!! It's morally NOT RIGHT to do something like that. It's like these people must have been in a clique in elementary school that didn't allow Redheads, or kids with freckles or something, and they continued it on.
