Greenleaves,
While you were posting this I was writing you a message in Grief and Loss. Hope you will find some peace in knowing you and Hammie will met again.

My grief comes in waves. One moment I'm OK, the next something triggers me and I'm crying again. The sadness is overwhelming.

All this is making me think of my own mortality and that of the people I know and love.

I'm afraid of death.

I have to do something when I feel better to remember Hammie.

I think I'm going to make appointments to get a check-up for myself. I don't want to die.

I'm so easily triggered right now...it's horrible.

I still have to bury Hammie tomorrow. My Mom and I made him a cardboard coffin. I lined it with the toilet paper bedding he loved so much and put a couple of blocks of his food in there with him. I sprinkled some hamster seeds in there too.

I'm so sad. I miss the little guy.

I'm sorry for your loss. Maybe Hammie is playing with my Sleepy Sandy at Rainbow Bridge now. Do you know about Rainbow Bridge?

GL, it sounds to me like you are doing exactly the right things to deal with your grief. I hope the burial will help, and please follow through with check-ups for yourself... that is always a good idea.

I know how much you hurt, just let yourself miss him and go through the grieving process at your own speed.

When I'm feeling better I will create a memorial for Hammie. Right now I'm just too overcome with grief. Hammie's life was short, but he made a huge difference while he lived.

I thought I was prepared for Hammie's death. I know hamster live only 2 to at most 3 years. I knew Hammie's time was up.

I just never expected the pain to be so great. 2 years and 7 months with the little guy. He was my first and only pet. So many times I was overcome with depression and I would just hold him and he would make me feel better. Now he's gone. At least he is not suffering. I worried that he might be suffering. He seemed pretty active right up to a week before today. I think he died peacefully in his sleep.

I don't know how to handle this. I think I have to distract myself. The tears start flowing and they cannot stop when I'm triggered. I have to let time lessen my grief.

I want to be able to remember Hammie and feel happy about his life. Right now I just start crying when I think of Hammie. When will I be able to remember Hammie and not cry?

There is no set time, unfortunately. It's different for everyone. All I can say is that now is the time to grieve. Take that time for yourself. Soon, you'll notice that it hurts less and less. I don't think you ever really stop missing the lost ones, but in time, you can begin to look back and remember the good stuff. I've got a great story about a dog I lost many years ago that I still miss. It's good for a laugh. If you're interested, I'll PM it to you. Don't wanna hijack your thread.

(((deneb))) i'm sorry hon.
i know you loved him a whole heap.
he was lucky to be loved so much.
he had a good life.

sometimes it can be hard...
i remember reading something about flowers...
one can mourn because their beauty is so transient
or one can appreciate them all the more because their time is limited.
sounds like hammie was pretty special
and he was lucky he had you to see that.
