Thanks everyone.

She didn't have all that much in her accounts - maybe £2000 total - but I'm still surprised the bank allowed the thieves to withdraw ALL her money from TWO accounts at the same bank.

I'm not sure what will happen - hopefully the bank will reimburse her. She's expecting the police to visit her either tonight or tomorrow, she reported it to the police station when she found out what had happened when she'd gone to the bank to report her cards missing.

Oh wow... that sucks. Stupid banks

I hope the bank repays the money, they've got to have some sort of plan in place when that sort of thing happens.

Yeah, I hope they do!

I never knew that ban cards could be used when stolen. I never thought that a person would actually go into the bank and withdraw money using the card! I'd been thinking that they wouldn't be able to withdraw money from cash machines. I'll be watching my own money more closely from now on too! They do have the woman who went into the bank for the withdrawal on CCTV, so hopefully they will be able to trace her.

That is awful!!! Do you know how they stole them?

The law and regulations could be different in England. I use debit cards at my bank instead of credit cards. Credit cards are supposed to be safer, but I'm not going to risk getting deep into debt again.

I had a long talk with one of the bank officers about debit cards. She assured me that if I reported the theft as soon as possible I would only be liable for a max of $50.00.

Also, I bank at a "free checking" place. Bank manager says what a lot of people do is open two accounts and keep the debit card for the main money at home. Then estimate what I'll need for the day, transfer that amount into my "spending account" and JUST carry that card, so if thieves steal it, they will have very little $ to steal.

I also use this when ordering off the net.

Thought I'd pass that along!

*HUGS*

She thinks they were stolen when she was in the library. She told me that two women had been talking to her, one actually touching her, and then they left and later returned right next to her again. She got her purse back, they took the cards and then went to her bank. She had two accounts at the same bank. Before she'd gone to the library she'd put in a cheque and the records say that 16 minutes later the couple who had taken the cards withdrew the money from the same cashier my aunt had given the cheque to! The cashier didn't ask them for any ID at all when they emptied two accounts, one with £1000 in it and the other with £800 Stupid banks. So if the bank is found negligent they will have to pay her back the money. If not, she'll be left with nothing grrr. At the moment she's going to wait to see what the bank says.

some people these days....it takes all kinds to make the world go around thats for sure!

i wish the banks would come up with a system of a chip on the actual bank card and your photo on the bank card aswell. may seem like a hassle but would save the banks and customers/clients a lot in the long run!!!

even on credit cards. they are starting to come out with the chip on the card, but still no photo on the card.

even worse i had a friend who frauded the bank twice with her ex boyfriend. He had just gotten out of jail for fraud, they met, and he took off with her bank card, stole 2000 from her and then she took him back. the bank returned her money to her too. then it happened again, and the bank refunded her another 1500 dollars.

they scammed the bank and no one even cares to protect the innocent people like your aunt....so sad to hear. sorry hun and tbl!

In the UK some cards have that... debit and credit cards have the chips in them, and one bank, HSBC I think, puts small photos on the back of the cards. My aunt's cards weren't chipped though, they just forged her signature.

It's amazing what you say about the bank you talk about, anybody would think they'd get a bit suspicious about that... and what does tbl mean?

They didn't, they just signed her signature... I don't think her cards were chip-and-pin... if they were, all the bank asked was for a signature... they didn't even ask to see ID.
