For the first time in my life I'm considering hospitalizing myself. I've always been vehemently against being put in a hospital but I don't know what to do anymore. I have so many issues and I need to be diagnosed and see someone but I'm not sure how to begin. I just feel so hopeless.

What kind of emotions are you struggling with?
Do you have health insurance? Do you have any psychological diagnoses so far?

Okay I hear you wanting to do something to help yourself. Why not try going into the ER first and speaking with the social worker there? They have many resources and can also evaluate you to see if you need to see their psychiatrist etc. If not, they should be able to give you referrals according to your needs and assets.
![]() If you are not thinking of suicide, there's really no reason to go in at this time imo. The hospital is for stabilizing those who are too close to the edge and can't make good decisions...but yes, those stays are for :linking you up on the outside for ongoing therapy; stabilizing you on psychotropic medications; keeping you safe while they do the first two. ![]() Try to divert your thoughts, in the meantime, away from how bad and desperate you feel. Those are feelings, that's all. Think about how you are functioning okay, what areas...such as you were able to come to this site and post a question with good info. You do have times where you feel bad but are functioning okay. Focus on eating well, taking time to prepare a good meal and sitting and enjoying it as best you can...or in doing a small task you've been neglecting. You can get through this. You've felt better before and you will again. ![]() ![]() You can also go to the APA website and search for a psychologist in your local area Here: Psychologist Locator - Welcome / Text Search

right now America is changing over to the federal law that every american must have, health insurance coverage that covers things like basic mental physical and dental care. so you might want to contact your insurance company to find out what services you are covered for and what the process of inpatient care is for that insurance plan you chose. if you are paying on your own for your inpatient care then you can either contact your treatment provider or go to the ER. if you choose the ER you may have a wait depending upon how many people are waiting their turn and availability of beds on the mental health unit. |

My primary directive in life is to help others. When dealing with my alters and hallucinations and depression it makes me wonder how much I can be of service. That is the only time I'm suicidal. I will never admit when those times are because I'm terrified of being admitted against my will. How would I check what my insurance covers? That is probably a good place to start.

Check with your health care provider to see which therapists in your area are covered. Make some appointments, try some of them out, see if you can find someone you like. Hospitalization is a last resort - if you think you are going to harm yourself and won't be able to stop it, definitely visit an ER. Other than that, unfortunately, I've found many hospitals ill suited to treat or diagnose mental disorders. They're more of a 'catch' for emergencies - I'm not saying all hospitals are like this or that no one there would be able to help you, but I would suggest your best bet is finding someone who is well qualified and experienced, and who you also get along with (very important in a therapist!).
Don't be discouraged if you can't find a good one right away - there are a lot of incompetent workers out there, but also a lot of good ones. Find a good match and go from there. You've made it this far ![]() |

Just an update for anyone whose wondering. I asked the school counselor who he'd recommend for real counseling. I made myself go to this place even though I've called before and got scared and hung up. I was completely nervous and flustered but they got me set up with a counselor that I even got to meet. My first appointment is Wednesday and they are helping me figure out what my insurance will cover.
